ST. JOHNS, N.L. -- Michael Hutchinson was relieved to say the first impression he left on IceCaps fans was a good one. Hutchinson made 26 saves in his debut as a starter on home ice to carry the St. Johns IceCaps to a 2-0 win over the Manchester Monarchs on Monday night in American Hockey League action. "I dont think you can picture a better start," he said. "A shutout is nice, but the biggest thing is just getting the win and helping the team move up in the standings ... "I just went out there and played the best I could and gave the team a chance to win the game." IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge said he knew what to expect from Hutchinson. "Im not surprised, Ive seen him play in Providence in previous years," McCambridge said. "He was outstanding. He gave us a chance to win the game and he made the saves look easy." Blair Riley and Andrew Gordon scored for the IceCaps (21-16-3). The IceCaps opened the scoring 13:23 into the first period, when Riley carried the puck around the net, circled out front and ripped a wrist shot top corner from the slot. Gordon scored off a rebound from a Will ONeill slapshot 14:06 into the third period, after Jean-Francois Berube was caught out of position after doing well to make the first save. McCambridge was happy with how his team upped the tempo. "I like the way we were able to play a competitive game and an intelligent three periods," he said. "We played a physical style that allowed us chances to get momentum in the game." Berube finished with 25 saves for the Monarchs (26-12-6). Sebastian Janikowski Jersey . And though his comeback night didnt quite go to script, Bryant couldnt help reflecting on the work necessary to get back on that court -- and all the months of steady labour ahead to reclaim his game. MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Matt Kenseth will be right behind Jimmie Johnson when the green flag drops at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday. Johnson, the only man in front of him in the Sprint Cup championship points race, is starting second and Kenseth fourth. Kenseth would love to be that close at the finish, too. Johnson has found success at the tricky 0.526-mile track shaped like a paper clip, while Kenseth has been frustrated here throughout his career. Johnson, whose lead is four points, has eight wins at Martinsville in 23 starts. Kenseth? No wins in 27 starts, and his best finish -- second -- came back in 2002. But if theres hope for the 2003 series champion, it came in the spring when Kenseth passed Johnson for the lead at one point and led for 96 laps, more than the rest of his career here combined. He wound up 14th while Johnson won, but the early burst gave Kenseth a reason for optimism. "This spring, at least the first half of the race, we were really good and really competitive and (it) really, really helped me be better because we had the car good," he said. "I dont know. Some tracks feel natural to you and comes real easy, fits your style and other ones are just a lot more work. "This one has just been, in general, a lot more work for me than other tracks." Johnson has no such problem, at Martinsville or seemingly anywhere, in Kenseths eyes. "People always say, Man, its a great track for Jimmie, he said. "Is there a bad one?" Johnson laughed when told Kenseth said "you can almost pencil the 48 in" at Martinsville. Johnson said he only needs to look at the starting lineup to realize hes got plenty of competition. "We have had a good run over the years," he said, slipping into a businesslike tone. "I understand where that comes from based on past history, but again it doesnt guarantee anything for this weekend. "At most its flattering, but weve got to go out there and get to work." Besides, Kenseth has a crafty way of his own, as Johnson experienced at Charlotte this year. "I think he ran around the top five -- fifth, sixth, seventh -- somewhere throughout the night," Johnson said of the race two weeks ago. "We were up there dominating the race and I started to think that we might pick up a couple of points on him. Then when the checkered fell he was one spot ahead of me. "He is a great driver, great team, and there is no quit in those guys." Kenseth also will have something of an advantage at the start, with three teammates surrounding Johnson. Denny Hamlin is on the pole to Johnsons inside, with Kyle Busch and Kenseth behind him. Its not Kenseths style to pay attention to where Johnson or anyone else is during the race because it doesnt change the way he races. Kenseth says he just races as hard as he can every race. With four races to go, he likes his chances in the final three at Texas, Phoenix and Homstead, Fla. Theyre all tracks where he feels his team can hit something that gives him a chance to win. But first, theres Sunday. "Good news is we are still in it as of right now," he said before Fridays qualifying runs. "Hopefully, we can have a great race on Sunday and still be in it when we leave here." Trent Brown Patriots Jersey . Nash, who plays for the rival L.A. Lakers, spoke as a representative of current NBA players at a press conference assembled by Sacramento mayor and National Basketball Players Association adviser Kevin Johnson.MILWAUKEE -- Its been a busy summer for Milwaukee Bucks general manager John Hammond. After hiring a new coach, Hammond set his sights on the NBA draft, then got to work rebuilding the roster, eventually bringing 11 new players to Milwaukee. Last week, however, Hammond made sure one of those players still around after last season stays in Milwaukee for a while. He signed centre Larry Sanders to a four-year extension worth approximately $44 million. "Weve talked about moving forward as an organization and building around young players on our roster," Hammond said. "Hes one, if not the, key, core piece for us moving forward. This is a great step for us for who we want to become." The extension comes after a breakout year for 24-year-old Sanders, who led Milwaukee in rebounds (9.5 per game) and averaged 9.8 points, both career highs. His 2.83 blocks per game were second in the NBA to Oklahoma Citys Serge Ibaka. "Hes one of the top defenders in the NBA," Hammond said. "Hes one of the top shot-blockers in our business and hes only going to get better defensively, get better on offence and were really excited to have him be a part of our organization long-term." Offensively, Sanders is still a work-in-progress, but has shown marked improvement over his first three seasons and shot a career-best 50.6 per cent from the field. Free throw shooting is soomething of a concern -- hes 58 per cent from the line in his career but -- but he connected at a 61.dddddddddddd8 per cent clip a year ago while averaging 8.5 attempts. Milwaukee selected Sanders with the 15th overall pick in the 2010 draft. He was set to enter the final year of his four-year rookie-scale contract, which will pay him $3 million this season. Getting better on offence is a key goal for Sanders and new coach Larry Drew. "Not just going to the basket but trying to facilitate more, open the court and understand the offence more," Sanders said. "Theres a lot on the offensive end Im working on." Sanders emotional play has made him a crowd-favourite at the Bradley Center, but has also made him a target for officials, who ejected him a league-leading five times last season, including three in a span of 10 days. He finished fifth in the league with 3.3 fouls per game and was third with 14 technicals. "My focus needs to be on winning the game," Sanders said. "I know coach hates when we talk to the officials ... so Ill just watch him." Not long after taking the job, Drew sat down with Sanders and made it clear that things had to change. "We went to dinner and talked," Drew said. "It was a very frank and candid conversation; he realized he had to get better and its something Im going to expect of him." With 7:42 remaining in the opening quarter, point guard Shane Larkin found an open Anthony on the wing for a 3-pointer, becoming the 40th player in league history to score over 20,000 points in their careers.Prior to joining the Knicks, Anthony played his first eight seasons with the Denver Nuggets, scoring 13,970 points. Since the Feb. 2, 2011 three-team deal that brought him to New York before the trade deadline, Anthony has tallied over 6,000 points. Jimmy Garoppolo Jersey . Kentavius Street Jersey . -- Zach Johnson asked his short-iron approach on the par-4 18th to "Do something right, baby.COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard felt the deciding goal shouldnt have counted in the Red Wings 4-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night. "I guess its something to remember here and keep in the back of our minds -- if you knock the net off, just throw (the puck) in there," he said. "It should count." Cam Atkinson scored a goal confirmed by video replay in the third period, and Ryan Johansen added an empty-netter for his second of the game to lead the Blue Jackets to a win that further tightens the already close Eastern Conference playoff race. On an odd-man rush, Matt Calverts shot from the left wing was stopped by Howard, although the puck popped loose behind the goalie. Atkinson, racing down the right wing, was hit by Detroit defenceman Brendan Smith. Atkinsons leg knocked the net off its moorings as he backhanded the loose puck into the cage as it was sliding away from the goal line. The goal, at 6:58 of the third, was ruled good because Smiths hit on Atkinson had knocked the net loose -- bringing a loud cheer from the crowd of 15,103. "I wasnt really sure," Atkinson said about the goal. "The net went off, but their explanation was the puck was going in as the net was coming off. Matty just made a good play. The puck kind of snuck out between his legs, and I was at the right place at the right time." Columbus, Detroit, Washington and Toronto are all tied with 80 points for places 7-10 in the East. The Blue Jackets win any tiebreaker, and Detroit and Columbus also have more games left (10) than the Capitals (9) and Maple Leafs (8). Columbus had lost three of four. "We got some fortunate bounces," Johansen said after goals 28 and 29. "Thats what we needed." Brandon Dubinsky and Johansen had power-play goals in the first period after the Blue Jackets had failed to score on their previous 36 opportunities with a man advantage over a 10-game spaan.dddddddddddd James Wisniewski assisted on both and added another helper. "You know what Im pleased about? Hopefully after tonight I wont get any more questions about the power play," Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards said. "When we scored the first one I said, Good. Now we can stop talking about it." Curtis McElhinney stopped 22 of 23 shots in relief of Sergei Bobrovsky, who left after the first period because of the flu. McElhinney made Atkinsons goal stand with big stops on Darren Helm with 8 minutes left, making a sprawling pad save, and again a minute later on Johan Franzens wraparound. With 1:44 left, he deflected Kyle Quinceys wicked blast from the high slot with his right shoulder. Red Wings coach Mike Babcock refused to blame the call on the Atkinson goal for the loss. "It doesnt matter what I think, obviously," he said. "They made a decision. I thought when the net was off, the goal didnt count but they evidently thought our guy pushed their guy in. So its a goal. Theres no sense disputing that. We had to get one more goal." Gustav Nyquist, last weeks No. 1 star in the NHL, maintained his hot hand with two goals for the Red Wings, who were 3-0-1 in their previous four. He has 20 goals in his last 24 games. "It doesnt really matter," he said of his two goals. "It was an important game. Well forget about this one and move on." NOTES: With a TV camera just a couple of feet away on the other side of the glass during a break, Johansen grinned and tore off a piece of athletic tape and playfully stuck it on the glass to shield the cameras view. ... Howard stopped 23 of 26 shots. ... Last week, Nyquist had six goals and seven points in four games; the Blue Jackets had six goals as a team in their previous five games. ... RW Mitch Callahan, recalled on Monday from AHL Grand Rapids, made his NHL debut for the Red Wings, skating on the fourth line. MY 2013-14 NBA PREDICTIONS MVP: (LeBron James, Heat): Simply put, hes the best. He gets better every year and hes a wonderful team player. Hes the most impactful guy night in and night out; he does it all. I love his development with his low post game. Hes a gym rat and loves to play. His leadership skills are growing with his maturity. Most Improved: (Anthony Davis, Pelicans): Injuries were an issue last year for Davis but this guy is the real deal and I think well see significant growth in all aspects of his game this season. Hes a top-notch rebounder and shot blocker and his overall offensive skills will take a big step as he gets stronger. The year under his belt around the league will benefit his perspective. Rookie: (Cody Zeller, Bobcats): Hes likely not the most talented rookie but hell get significant playing time in Charlotte and teaming with Al Jefferson in the front court with him will give him a top-notch back-to-the-bucket post player to settle into a nice role. He runs and jumps and has the skill set. He plays hard and will get lots with his effort. Hes ready for the next level and his polish will help him. Theyre committed to him and hell get loads of chances to shine. Coach: (Rick Adelman, Timberwolves): A healthy Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio and the addition of Kevin Martin is huge for this team. Hes a creative offensive coach with the right temperament to help players take the next step in their development. Hes one of the most underrated coaches in the NBA that weve seen over the years. His experience and calm demeanor will bring out the best in this squad. Eastern Conference Playoff Teams 1-8: Heat, Bulls, Pacers, Nets, Knicks, Hawks, Wizards and Raptors. Western Conference Playoff Teams 1-8: Clippers, Thunder, Spurs, Rockets, Warriors, Timberwolves, Grizzlies and Mavericks. Eastern Conference Finals: Heat over Bulls in 7 - Too much of the King. Western Conference Finals: Clippers over Spurs in 6 - Chris Paul gets to the promised land; Doc Rivers leadership shows the other LA team how its done. NBA Finals: Heat over Clippers in 6 - Experience, savvy, three-point shooting, defence, role definition, and that guy that wears No. 6 make it all happen. Toronto Raptors (8th Place in East/39-43): They must get through the month of November in respectable shape and the Top 8 guys have to stay healthy. Bottom line, this is a good to very good starting unit and theyll have to play major minutes and limit the exposure of the bench to have a chance. I see lots of close games on the horizon but I feel confident that they have the role definition and increased talent level and maturity to pull out some of the ones that got away last year. I really liked how Dwane Casey coached his team in the last three weeks of the season last spring and more of the same is needed. Ride those starters every minute you can, keep the rotation tight and develop a sixth sense amongst the prime guys with complete understanding in crunch time what each guys job is. That minimizes late game issues. Decisive and sharp. Less is more. Edrice Adebayo Jersey . The Earthquakes (6-9-7) were coming off a 5-0 loss at home last Saturday to FC Dallas. San Antonio, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Five Spurs reached double figures in a balanced effort, and San Antonio held Utah to 33.3 percent shooting in its 89-69 win over the Jazz. Tiago Splitter had 14 points, Danny Green scored 13, and Kawhi Leonard and Aron Baynes posted 12 apiece in the dominant victory. The Spurs won their second straight game in convincing fashion since Leonard returned to the lineup after missing the last 15 games with a torn ligament in his hand. The reigning NBA champs are 17-7 with him in the lineup this season. Rudy Gobert had 13 points and 18 rebounds off the bench for the Jazz, who have lost four of their last five games. Utahs offense never got on track after shooting just 6-for-25 in the first quarter. It followed that up by scoring 12 points in the second and trailed 43-27 at halftime. The Jazz had more rebounds (29) than points at the break. The margin hovered between 12 and 19 in the third quarter before the Spurs put the game away early in the fourth. Green hit a pair of 3s during a 10-4 run to open the final quarter. He then followed Goberts three-point play with another trey, and Boris Diaw hit from deep on the next Spurs possession. Rooney is in contention to play some part of Uniteds FA Cup quarter-final replay against the Hammers at the Boleyn Ground having played just over an hour for the clubs U21 side on Monday. The 30-year-old has been missing with a knee injury since a 2-1 defeat at Sunderland on February 13 but manager Louis van Gaal hinted he could be involved in the cup tie. Rooney, like United as a whole, has struggled this season and has scored just seven Premier League goals - seeing his starting berth for England brought into question given the goalscoring form of both Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane.United sit fifth in the table - four points adrift of Manchester City in fourth spot - and were beaten 3-0 at Tottenham on Sunday. Rooney played 61 minutes for Uniteds U21s in the 1-0 win over Middlesbrough They return to London as underdogs against a West Ham side looking to win their final ever cup tie at the Boleyn Ground ahead of their summer move to the Olympic Stadium. But Bilic is a big fan of Rooney and insists he would be happy to see Englands all-time leading goalscorer sit out the contest altogether.Asked if Rooney had a point to prove given his lack of goals, Bilic replied: I dont know about that. LVG: We must contain Carroll Louis van Gaal says Man Utd will need to nullify the threat posed by Andy Carroll... To be fair I am a massive Rooney fan. Since he stepped on the pitch in an Everton shirt. He is for me - I dont know, I cant talk about Jimmy Greaves or Bobby Charlton or Bobby Moore or any of them - lets say my football era, Rooney is the best English player.I would rather him not play, put it that way. 100 per cent, 70 per cent fit, I would rather him watch the game.He played last night, him and Phil Jones. I dont know. On one hand, most of the teams on a good run, they dont change the team a lot.Now because they lost 3-0 we really dont know whos goinng to play, is it going to be Rooney from the start, is it going to be (Marouane) Fellaini, is it going to be (Ander) Herrera? Is he going to change a lot or stick to the team? Slaven Bilic hailed Rooney ahead of the final FA Cup clash to be held at the Boleyn Ground We dont know.dddddddddddd So it makes it harder for us. But we arent going to change the team because of them.West Ham sit just a point and a place behind United in the Premier League table and still have to face Van Gaals side in what is scheduled to be the last-ever competitive fixture at the Boleyn Ground when they meet in the league next month.Uniteds season has been a forgettable one so far - but Bilic knows they can turn on the style at the drop of a hat and that a Wembley semi-final date with Everton on April 23 is anything but a given. Charlies FA Cup prediction Charlie Nicholas tips West Ham to progress to the FA Cup semi-finals over Manchester United... When asked if United had lost their fear factor, the Croatian said: Yes, but they can get that fear factor back during the game.To get it back on paper you need a good run, you need five games, you need big wins against big clubs, to get it back before the game. But during the game, they can get it back like this. And they have done it so far. What worries me a little bit is that every time they were there, they got a result. Whether against Liverpool at the beginning of the season, or against Arsenal, every time. So make no mistake. We know that. Of course we are not going to make our players be afraid of them, no. But respect them.We know who is coming. They are capable, of course they are capable. One would think that winning one of the NHLs signature events – with 50,000 fans watching in the stadium and a larger-than-normal television audience – could propel this team onto a much-needed winning streak. But looking at the brief history of these events, there is hardly any connection between winning an outdoor game and any subsequent success in the NHL. A few years ago, the 2008 Penguins and the 2009 Red Wings each made it to the Stanley Cup Final in the same year after winning the Winter Classic game – although that was more likely the result of having a powerhouse lineup than anything to do with playing in an outdoor game. For the Senators, a better comparable would be to look at some of the less dominant teams that have won an outdoor game and how that affected them immediately afterwards. This season, for example, the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Winter Classic in Ann Arbor – but then turned around and lost their next four games. In 2011, the Calgary Flames beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-0 in the Heritage Classic at McMahon Stadium. The Flames ended up losing three of their next five games, so any momentum they gained from winning the outdoor game was non-existent. The same can be said for the 2003-04 Montreal Canadiens, who beat the Edmonton Oilers in the first-ever outdoor game at Commonwealth Stadium. The Habs managed to win only two of their next five games – although they did manage a pair of ties as well. This seasonn, we even saw the Anaheim Ducks stumble after winning the outdoor game at Dodger Stadium against the Los Angeles Kings.dddddddddddd The Ducks lost four of their next five games – marking their worst stretch of the regular season. The same thing happened to the 2010 Boston Bruins and the 2011 Washington Capitals – each team lost four of their next five games after winning the Winter Classic. So in many cases, it seems like teams suffer a letdown – rather than an uplift – following a big win in an outdoor game. INDIANAPOLIS -- Lance Stephenson slumped his shoulders and dragged his feet to the bench with three minutes left in the game. Three points shy of a triple-double, Stephenson heard the crowd boo his removal and chant moments later for his return. Things are going so well for the Indiana Pacers that they can contemplate personal milestones and finally turn their attention to a difficult road trip awaiting them in early December. "I knew we would be a good team," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. "They are driven and hungry. Were off to a good start." Paul George scored 23 points and Roy Hibbert added 13 and eight rebounds to easily lead surging Indiana past injury hampered Washington 93-73 on Friday night. The Pacers won their sixth straight and extended their best start in franchise history to 15-1. The Wizards (7-9) snapped a three-game winning streak and lost their 11th straight game in Indianapolis. They committed 18 turnovers, shot 40 per cent from the field and went 6-of-18 from 3-point range. Star point guard John Wall struggled badly, rarely attacked the rim and finished with eight points on 4-of-14 shooting. Marcin Gortat led Washington with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Trevor Ariza scored 14. The Pacers shut out a transition attack that came in ranked second in the NBA. After averaging 18.6 points a game on the fast break, Washington had none against the defensive-minded Pacers. "When we did get in the open court we turned the ball over," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. "They got back and jammed the lane. That was the opposite of how we wanted to play." Washington had won five of six before injuries finally caught up. The team announced shortly before the game that starting power forward Nene would sit due to a sore right Achilles tendon. Also missing were starting shooting guard Bradley Beal and prized rookie Otto Porter, the No. 3 pick in the draft. "That took a little bit out of us," Wittman said. "Down seven (43-36) at half, It might have been one of our worst halves. I could tell they just didnt have the vibe. We were drained." As usual, the Pacers stifled spirits and took control in the third quarter. They entered the day outscoring opponents by an average of 6.7 points in the third and followed that script once more by outscoring Washington 26-20 to carry a 69-56 lead to the fourth. The gap only widened from there. "We just come out focused," George said. "We really are dialed in. We are working on that dead spot in the second quarter. Hopefully we can shore that up on our road trip." Stephenson departed with seven points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. He made multiple flashy passes that drew oohs and aahs before Vogel replaced him with Orlando Johnson. On Wednesday in Charlotte, Stephenson had 15 points and 10 rebounds. He had the first two triple-doubles of his career earlier this month. Vogel knew bigger things are ahead. "I love to see guys get triple-doubles. But you cant make moves that compromise the next game," Vogel said. The Pacers begin a five-game road trip against the Western Conference on Sunday at the Los Angeles Clippers. Four of the five opponents are above .500 and the slate ends with games against Oklahoma City and reigning conference champ San Antonio. Vogel had hushed talk of the trip to help the team focus. Now, Indiana is ready to test its league-best record against other top teams. "We must continue to play our game on the road trip," forward David West said. "This will really tell us something and give us an idea of what we are made of. Theyre all good teams. Well have to play at our highest level." The Wizards, who trailed 28-14 after the opening quarter, made their only push in the second with George and Hibbert on the bench. They scored on 10 of their first 15 possessions and got as close as 38-34 when Trevor Booker hustled for an offensive rebound and made a layup. But Indiana allowed just two points over the final 4 1/2 minutes of the half to end the run. Hibbert scored 10 points in the third on 4-of-5 shooting after an 0-of-5 first half. Indiana shot 11-of-20 as a team in the third. NOTES: Pacers forward Danny Granger has yet to play this season due to lingering effects of a strained right calf. . CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Panthers Pro Bowl defensive end Greg Hardy was released from jail on $17,000 bond Wednesday, one day after being arrested on charges of assault on a female and communicating threats. Hardy left jail wearing sweatpants and a black tank top. He did not speak to reporters. Charlotte Mecklenburg County Judge Rebecca Thorne Tin called Hardy a potential threat and ordered him not to have any contact with the accuser and to attend three Alcoholic Anonymous meetings per week. In the arrest warrant, the 24-year-old accuser alleges Hardy threw her on a pile of guns and threatened to kill her. She filed a protective restraining order against Hardy on Wednesday, saying he attacked her in his apartment and "picked me up and threw me into the tile tub area in the bathroom" and that she "has bruises from head to toe." She also says in the filing that the 6-foot-4, 290-pound Hardy pulled her by the hair and "was screaming he was going to kill me, break my arms and other threats." She says Hardy choked her with both hands around her throat before picking her up and throwing her onto a couch "covered with assault rifles and/or shotguns" and "bragged that the guns were loaded." "He threatened to shoot me if I went to the media or reported his assault to anyone," she says. She says Hardy has approximately 25 to 30 firearms in his downtown Charlotte apartment, including an AK-47. She says she eventually got out of the apartment, where she ran into Charlotte Mecklenburg police. Hardys attorney, Chris Fialko, refuted those allegations Wednesday. He argued in court -- and later outside the courtroom -- that Hardy and Sammy Curtis, his administrative assistant, were attacked by the accuser, and that it was Hardy who made the 911 call to police at 4:18 a.m. Tuesday. The accusers attorney, Stephen Goodwin, said his client was held down by Curtis and prevented from calling police. Goodwin called Fialkos claim that Hardy was the one attacked by the accuser false. "The physical evidence doesnt even come close to matching that," Goodwin said. There were conflicting reports from 911 calls obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday night from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. On a call made by Hardy, the NFL player can be heard saying, "t;My assistant is trying to restrain her and shes trying to break free and hit me with her heel.dddddddddddd Im literally running around the table right now." Hardy also mentions in the call that he thinks the accuser is "on coke or something. I dont know. Shes been drinking. I dont know what shes on, man." In another call by someone at the players condominium, an unidentified woman tells the operator that the woman had been beaten for more than 30 minutes. "Hes beating her (butt) in there. Some girls getting her (butt) beat upstairs and I heard it. And I seen it. Hes beating her (butt) right now." Goodwin said Hardy and the accuser, who the lawyer said works as a waitress in Charlotte, were in a relationship and previously lived together. They were not living together at the time of the incident, which occurred at an "after hours" party. Goodwin said he doesnt know what sparked the fight, but Tin stated in the courtroom that both parties were drinking alcohol. Judge Tin said the court was "very concerned" about the bruises on the accusers neck and back. Hardy spent Tuesday night in jail and appeared in court Wednesday wearing an orange jump suit. The incident began early Tuesday morning. Police said patrol officers responded to a domestic violence assault call at 4:18 a.m. Hardy tied a franchise record with 15 sacks last season for the leagues second-ranked defence. He had 11 sacks in 2012. That production convinced the salary-cap strapped Panthers to make Hardy their franchise player at $13.116 million for one season. Hardy signed the teams offer sheet in March. The Panthers said in a statement Tuesday they were "very disappointed" to learn of the allegations and planned to investigate. Hardys NFL agent, Drew Rosenhaus, was in the courtroom but declined comment. Hardys next court date is June 27. The Panthers organization is particularly sensitive to domestic violence issues. In 2001, Panthers wide receiver Rae Carruth was found guilty of conspiring to murder his girlfriend, Cherica Adams, who was carrying his child. Carruth was sentenced to 18 to 24 years in prison. Hardys court appearance occurred on the same day the Panthers hosted a breakfast at their stadium for "Men For Change," a group that serves victims of domestic violence. NEW YORK -- The New York Mets traded slumping first baseman Ike Davis to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night, parting ways with a power hitter who proved to be too inconsistent at the plate. Pittsburgh sent minor league right-hander Zack Thornton and a player to be named to New York for the 27-year-old Davis. The Mets announced the deal just minutes before a 6-0 loss to Atlanta. Davis was on the field during batting practice earlier in the day. The Pirates had searched all winter for a first baseman, without success in the trade and free-agent markets. "Ultimately, we found the right fit," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said. "Hopefully this is a move that solves our first base needs for years to come," he said. The lefty-swinging Davis hit 32 homers for the Mets in 2012, but fell off sharply last year. "Obviously, I didnt play as well as I should have," he said. Davis was hitting .208 with one home run and five RBIs in 24 at-bats. He lost his starting job to Lucas Duda and was relegated to a part-time role with the Mets, who also have Josh Satin at first base. "You cant play a major league season with three first basemen, so one of us had to go," Davis said outside the Mets clubhouse after the game started. "Obviously its an emotional time, but we arent there bawling our eyes out," he said. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said the team decided several months ago to trade Davis. "We are happy for Ike and it was a situation we needed to resolve," Alderson said. "I would not say that we lost patience with Ike. At some point you have to make a decision about players on the roster, so we simply had to make a choice." Said Mets star David Wright: "It happened late so I dont think a lot of guys knew, but Ike will be missed. Through thick and thin, Ike was the best teammate Ive ever had." The Mets filled Davis roster spot by activating outfielder Chris Young from the 15-day disabled list. He started in centre field. "Happy to be back," Young said before the game. "Seems like its been forever, for some reason." Young had been out with an injured right quadriceps. He played one inning in the field for the Mets during the opening week and was pulled before he came to bat. Davis, the son of former big league pitcher Ron Davis, was a promising prospect when he hit 19 homers with 71 RBIs while batting .264 as a rookie in 2010. He got off to a strong start the following year, hitting .302 with seven homers and 25 RBIs in 36 games, but missed most of the season with an ankle injury. Still, he seemed primed for a fine career. Davis power numbers peaked in 2012 -- he was tied for fifth in the NL homer race -- even while he hit just .227. But he got off to a second consecutive miserable start last year and was demoted to the minors for nearly a month. He batted .205 with nine home runs and 33 RBIs, missing the final month with a side strain. "Obviously, its a little weird. Ive been with the Mets for a long time. Ive got really good friends here," Davis said. "Ive had a blast in New York. Its where I made my childhood dreams come true." As for joining the Pirates a year after they ended a long playoff drought, "in different scenery it will be better," Davis said. Since no cash was involved, the Mets save $3,117,486 of Davis $3.5 million salary. The Pirates didnt bring back first baseman Garrett Jones after the season and went searching for a lefty-hitting complement to Gaby Sanchez. But no major moves developed and the Pirates went into spring training with only prospect Andrew Lambo and non-roster invitee Travis Ishikawa at the position. Lambo didnt hit much in exhibition play and Ishikawa got off to a quick start during the regular season before dipping. Manager Clint Hurdle has reverted back to playing Sanchez -- a player who has drastic right/left splits -- against righties. "Ikes done a really nice job against right-handed pitchers in his career. Hes had two big seasons and two injury-plagued seasons and were betting that our guys can get him back on the right track. Were betting that he was a better fit in this ballpark than he was in what used to be spacious Citi Field," Huntington said. Young went 8 for 12 with two homers in a three-game rehabilitation stint at Triple-A Las Vegas. Young hit 27 homers with 91 RBIs and 28 steals for Arizona in 2010. He hasnt been able to duplicate those numbers since then. The 25-year-old Thornton was 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA in four relief appearances at Triple-A Indianapolis. He will report to Las Vegas. According to various reports, the striker is about to sign a five-and-a-half year extension with Manchester United worth a reported 300,000 pounds a week that would see him at Old Trafford until 2019. The 28-year-old England international came over to United from Everton in 2004. Though a five-time Premier League champion and Champions League-winner with the club, Rooneys time with United has not gone without its controversy. In August of 2010, Rooney released a statement questioning the Red Devils ambition and declaring his intent to leave the club. Only days later in a dramatic turn of events, Rooney signed a contract extension. Towards the end off last season, Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that Rooney had submitted a transfer request and speculation grew about Rooneys future with the arrival of David Moyes at Old Trafford, Rooneys former manager at Everton with whom he shared a frosty relationship.dddddddddddd Although, Rooney denied that he wanted out, he was linked for a majority of the summer with a move to rivals Chelsea. So he stepped out of the batters box, took a deep breath and waited. "I was struggling the first two pitches but I was thinking about the pitch I want," Marte said. "He threw me a slider and it was a good chance to hit the ball." Was it ever. Marte turned an 81 mph slider over the middle of the plate into a game-tying, two-run double and then scored on pinch-hitter Ike Davis single two batters later as the Pirates rallied for a 3-2 win Tuesday night. "Every time were up to bat theres a chance we do something," Davis said. "Its hard to shut us down for nine. Weve done it a lot this year ... anything is possible with us." The Pirates were shut down for eight innings by Arizona starter Wade Miley before rallying in the ninth. Neil Walker and pinch-hitter Gregory Polanco started the inning with singles against Miley. One batter later, Marte turned an 0-2 count into a tie game. "He got a ball that he could get a barrel on," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "He slowed it down and put a good swing on it and hit it to the big part of the ballpark." Andrew McCutchen was intentionally walked and Davis hit a broken-bat single to right, scoring Marte easily as the Pirates won for the fourth time in five games. Ernesto Frieri (1-3) earned his first win with the Pirates after working a scoreless ninth. The abrupt ending ruined an otherwise stellar outing for the struggling Miley, who is winless since May 10. The left-hander retired the first 14 batters he faced and allowed four hits in eight-plus innings, striking out 10. Despite the slender lead, Arizona manager Kirk Gibson didnt hesitate to send Miley back out for the ninth in search of his first career shutout. Things changed quickly, however, when Walker and Polanco reached. "I didnt make good pitches," Miley said. "Actually, the pitch to Walker was a good one, a slider down and in, but I hung a pitch to Polanco. I was making pitches all night long but I didnt make them when I needed to." Until the late miscues, it appeared Miley was on his way to his firrst victory in nine starts.dddddddddddd Miguel Montero and Aaron Hill produced consecutive RBI singles in the fifth off Pirates starter Jeff Locke. Paul Goldschmidt went 2 for 4 with a run for the Diamondbacks, who fell to 27-2 when leading after eight innings. "I want to be the guy out there with the game on the line," Reed said after blowing his fourth save. "Sometimes it doesnt go the way I want or my teammates want it to." Locke lacked Mileys crispness but allowed only two runs over eight innings, yielding eight hits while walking one and striking out three. The Diamondbacks stranded six runners in the first four innings and were on their way to doing it again in the fifth before catching a break thanks to some sloppy defence by the Pirates. Goldschmidt singled with two outs and was attempting to steal second when the Pirates sniffed it out. Locke threw to Gaby Sanchez at first to start the rundown, but the burly Goldschmidt was safe at second when Sanchezs throw to shortstop Jordy Mercer sailed into left field. Montero followed with a single that brought Goldschmidt home, and Montero scored moments later on Hills flare to shallow right. Given some room to work with, Miley didnt let it go to waste. He struck out the side in the seventh and had little trouble in the eighth. Arizona nearly extended its lead to 3-0 in the ninth, only to have Gerardo Parra thrown out at home trying to score on a single to right by Ender Inciarte. Less than 15 minutes later, the Pirates were celebrating their second win in 35 games when trailing after eight innings. NOTES: Pirates LHP Francisco Liriano is scheduled to pitch four innings in a simulated game Wednesday. Liriano, on the disabled list with a strained left oblique, threw 52 pitches without an issue in the bullpen on Sunday. ... An MRI on Arizona SS Chris Owings left shoulder Monday revealed no structural damage. Owings went on the disabled list Sunday with a left shoulder strain. Gibson called the injury just a bruise. Owings wont hit for about a week, but Gibson is confident the rookie will be able to return when his 15-day stint on the DL is up, barring any setbacks. ... MELBOURNE, Australia - Maria Sharapovas boyfriend described the five-time major winner as a great fighter, which he meant as a compliment. One of tennis power couples, Sharapova and No. 10 Grigor Dimitrov are discreet about their relationship but the up-and-coming Bulgarian star offered an opinion on what makes her such a tough player. You cant name one thing in particular with her, said Dimitrov, a Wimbledon semifinalist. I think shes been fighting throughout all those years, through everything that is in her way, jumped all the hurdles and all the obstacles.By far the greatest fighter ever, he said.Sharapova showed her grit in a narrow escape Wednesday, saving two match points before beating Alexandra Panova in their second-round match.Days like that define who you are, said Dimitrov, who also advanced to the third round Wednesday.By Jocelyn Gecker -- http://twitter.com/jgecker___TOUGH TALK: Bethanie Mattek-Sands has been injured so often in her colorful career, shes become practically blasé about the pain. Her tattoos are another matter. After sitting out six months last year while recovering from hip surgery, Mattek-Sands is into the third round at the Australian Open for the first time. The surgery was just the latest in a long string of physical ailments for the American, but she says her body is feeling the best it has in years.Ive been through so many injury comebacks, you almost dont even think about it, she said. Ive torn my MCL (medial collateral ligament), torn my shoulder, torn my ankle, broke my bone in my foot, two hip surgeries. Its something Ive had to learn to fight with.Coloring in the intricate flower tattoos on her right arm, however, has tested her pain threshold. SAN FRANCISCO -- Adam Wainwright will take the win and run. On a night he managed only a season low for strikeouts, the St. Louis right-hander still found ways to dominate. Wainwright allowed four hits over 7 2-3 innings, Matt Carpenter continued to feast on San Francisco pitching, and the Cardinals ended a scoring drought, beating the Giants 2-0 Wednesday night. "To come away with a way on a night I walked the pitcher, Ill run out of here," Wainwright said. "That was a big win for us." Carpenter had three hits and drove in a run, improving to .520 (26 for 50) against the Giants to help the Cardinals end a three-game losing streak. Matt Holliday added two hits and an RBI. "I dont think there is any rhyme or reason to it," Carpenter said. "I stay with the same approach and just try to help the team." Wainwright (11-4) took over the NL lead in ERA (1.89) and wins. He walked two and struck out one and his infielders combined to record 18 outs. "I was aware of that," Wainwright said. "Im getting outs, so why change? When you start thinking about strikeouts, then you start going deeper into counts. Guys were making great plays and laying out left and right." The closest the Giants came to scoring was in the eighth, when Tyler Colvin sent a drive to the wall in centre field and defensive replacement Peter Bourjos hauled it in. Joe Panik, who had two hits, was the lone Giant to venture past first base, reaching third with two outs in the sixth and again with two outs in the eighth. Ryan Vogelsong (5-5) gave up two runs on six hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out eight. Vogelsong lost his second straight start despite a 2.08 ERA with a walk and 15 strikeouts over that span. "He had all his pitches going, good tempo out there," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "For him to give up two runs, seven innings, thats a great job." The Cardinals ended a 26-inning scoreless streak by scoring twice in the third. Oscar Tavares doubled and Mark Ellis singled. After a strikeout, Carpenter and Holliday each singled in runs. Carpenter has hit safely in 14 of his 16 games against the Giants, including the last 10 10. "Were still trying to figure out a way to score runs," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "Those were big RBIs there. It lets Wainwright do what he does. Its no secret hes the guy we want on the mound." Vogelsong retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced, allowing one hit the rest of his outing. "It doesnt matter, its a loss," Vogelsong said. "Im tired of talking about stuff. Its all about wins and losses now and getting to the playoffs. It doesnt matter what the stuff is. Its about getting wins." Wainwright faced just two over the minimum until Panik singled with two outs in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Hector Sanchez also singled and Pat Neshek came on to get Gregor Blanco to pop out. Trevor Rosenthal got the final three outs for his 25th save in 28 chances after giving up an infield hit to Hunter Pence to start the ninth. Pence was originally ruled out, but the call was reversed following a review. NOTES: Tavares made his first MLB appearance in CF. ... Danny Amendola Dolphins Jersey . -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released veteran guard Davin Joseph, a mainstay on their offensive line over the past eight seasons. AKRON, Ohio -- Sergio Garcia doesnt know anything about being in a zone. He had no trouble identifying the best round of his career. Garcia one-putted the final 11 holes and made birdies on his last seven holes Friday in the Bridgestone Invitational to tie the course record at Firestone with a 9-under 61 and take a three-shot lead into the weekend. He had a birdie putt on every hole on the back nine, missing only a 15-footer from the fringe at No. 11. Garcia shot 27 on the back nine, a course record. "Just one of those moments that you love and you enjoy, and you wish there were no end," he said. It matched the tournament record held by Tiger Woods, who shot 61 in 2000 and 2013, and Jose Maria Olazabal, who shot his 61 in 1990. Woods went on to win by 11 shots in 2000 and seven shots last year. Olazabal won by 12 in the World Series of Golf. Garcia still has work to do. He was at 11-under 129, three shots clear of Justin Rose, who had a 67. British Open champion Rory McIlroy birdied his last two holes for a 64 and joined Marc Leishman of Australia (67) four shots out of the lead. McIlroy played in the group behind Garcia, and could hear what was going on if he couldnt see it. "Every time I looked, he was putting a ball in the hole and the crowd was cheering," McIlroy said. "I knew that he was making a few birdies." Graham DeLaet (69) of Weyburn, Sask., is tied for ninth at 4-under par. Garcia was five shots out of the lead when he had to scramble to save pars on back-to-back holes to close out the front nine on what seemed to be an ordinary round. Two good swings on the 10th hole led to a 20-foot birdie putt. He hit 8-iron to 2 feet on No. 12 and 3 feet on No. 13 for the easiest birdies he had all day, and those turned out to be the start of his big run. The Spaniard finished in style, making birdie putts of 15, 25 and 20 feet on his last three holes. It reminded Garcia of the Travelers Championships earlier this summer, when Kevin Streelman closed with seven straight birdies to beat Garcia and K.J. Choi by one shot. "When I made the one on 17 I thought, This kind of looks familiar from what happened not too long ago," Garcia said. "Obviously, Sunday would be even nicer. But Ill take what I can get." His previous best score was a 62 on three oother occasions -- as a 19-year-old at the Scottish Open and Byron Nelson Classic in 1999, and at Mount Juliet in 2002 at the American Express Championship.dddddddddddd Woods also shot his 61s at Firestone in the second round. He could have used something remotely close to that to stay in range of Garcia. Instead, Woods hit only four fairways off the tee and couldnt seem to make anything on the green. It added to a 71, leaving him 10 shots behind. "I didnt hit the ball well. I didnt putt well. I didnt do anything well," Woods said. "The only thing I did well was I fought hard. Grinded hard. Unfortunately, it wasnt a very good day." Starting times for the third round were moved up to Saturday morning, with threesomes off both tees, because of a forecast for storms. That figures to only keep Firestone soft, allowing players to attack the pins provided theyre in the short grass. Rose missed only two greens in posting a 67 as his momentum builds toward the final major of the year next week at the PGA Championship. He wouldnt mind adding a WGC title this week. Either way, there is a long stretch of big tournaments, and Rose is headed in the right direction. He won back-to-back starts at Congressional and Royal Aberdeen before stalling slightly at the British Open. "Im feeling good about peaking at this time of the year," Rose said. "Every week is big. You could argue a major championship in the middle of it all is the one youd really love to peak for next week. But at the same time, theres not a bad golf tournament now for about two months. Looking forward to the whole stretch." He didnt realize when he finished that Rose would have three shots to make up on Garcia starting out the third round. It didnt come entirely out of the blue for Garcia. Just two weeks ago, he challenged McIlroy briefly at Royal Liverpool until tying for second in the British Open. But this was something special, and Garcia could sense it. "It feels great to be able to ... equal the course record on a course like this. Even playing soft, its not that easy a course," Garcia said. "You have to drive the ball very, very well. You have to put the ball on the greens on the right spots because you can get some really, really fast putts. "Being in a group with Tiger and Jose Maria, it feels really good." WASHINGTON - This is not the sort of hit-and-run situation Nationals manager Matt Williams expected to encounter on a game day. Williams says he was stopped in traffic a few blocks away from Nationals Park while driving to work Wednesday when his car was sideswiped by another vehicle that then took off, chased by police. And it all happened while Williams was doing his weekly live radio appearance with "The Junkies" on 106.7 The Fan. Meeting with reporters before Washingtons game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Williams says: "Im fine. No worries. Cars not real good, but Im good." Williams says his car wasnt hit very hard. "All I feel is this car just kind of nudge in between myself and another car," he says, adding: "It was odd." Carlos Hyde Jersey . Television numbers were once again strong for the CFL this season, including big rating numbers for both the Eastern and Western Finals that were better than even hockey broadcasts from the same weekend. "The business model of our league is getting stronger," said Cohon. "We are focused on building a bright future for this league." The addition of the Ottawa RedBlacks next season will bring the leagues total of teams to nine and, with the current financial climate of the league, could open the possibility of further expansion into Atlantic Canada and a 10th team. "It was a pipe dream years ago but now that we are building a strong base, we can engage in those conversations." One of Sundays Grey Cup teams, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats will be moving into a new stadium next season and the league is committed to having them host the title game at some point, though an exact year has yet to be decided. "We want to bring the Grey Cup back to Hamilton and in the new year, we are going to sit down with the board of governors to talk about the rotation. We are definitely bringing the Grey Cup back to Hamilton, I just dont want to put a timeline on it." The Toronto Argonauts will be looking for a new place to play when their lease expires at Rogers Centre and one of the rumoured landing spots for the franchise is BMO Field, the current home of Major League Soccer franchise, Toronto FC. Cohon belieeves there are lots of opportunities around the city and they will be able to find a place somewhere in Toronto for the Argos to call home.dddddddddddd "There is interest at BMO Field," said Cohon. I wouldnt put as the CFL has attempted to improve the health of their players has been to increase the punishment levied on illegal hits, a system the commissioner believes is working. "Im confident in our relationship with the CFLPA when it comes to player discipline. The fines that we give are quite significant and I think it does change player behaviour." The number of concussions reported around the league this season was reduced by one from 43 in 2012 to 42 this season. The league is also working at the grassroots level to ensure that the players of the future are instructed in a better way to play the game. "We want to make sure that kids are learning how to tackle properly. Player safety in our league is mission critical," he added. This season, the league also produced a video that showed examples of hits that are dangerous and would be subject to fines. "We are constantly focused on making the game safer for our players." While there is a lot of interest in the information, Cohon believes that it is important for the dispersal draft lists for the upcoming expansion draft to be kept confidential. "We need to protect the relationship between the players and the coaches. My job is to protect the integrity of the game." You put a young player with potential in a winning environment where there is veteran leadership, outstanding coaching and management and a way that things are done and its a wonderful environment for growth, improvement in a climate of constant accountability and expectation of achievement/production.TORONTO - December 8th is a date that is forever etched in the mind of Raptors head coach Dwane Casey. I was sitting in my [hotel] room, Masai [Ujiri] called and it was a day that I wont forget, Casey admitted. It was exactly one year ago Monday. Losers of five straight contests, the Raptors were in Los Angeles, the final stop on what had been a disastrous three-game road trip. Just hours before their evening tilt with the Lakers, set to welcome Kobe Bryant back from an Achilles injury, Torontos general manager broke the news to his coach, who was taken aback and understandably torn to hear his featured player was on the move. Ujiri had agreed in principle to send Rudy Gay to Sacramento in a seven-player swap that would net the Raptors four complimentary pieces. Theres very few things you remember in life, Casey said, and that moment, I remember like it was yesterday. Gay was scheduled to be on the second bus to Staples Center, but remained at the hotel and would eventually be rerouted to the airport. Casey was on the first bus. He didnt have much time to digest the information before making the half-hour trek from Marina del Rey over to the arena. It was a long bus ride, he recalls. I was putting together the game plan on the way to the arena and substitution pattern because we only had eight guys. Those guys (Gay, Quincy Acy and Aaron Gray) couldnt play. Nobody knew what to expect, not Ujiri, not Casey. They couldnt have seen this coming. Hope for the best? Sure. But even in hindsight, theyre not claiming to have seen the future. With a record of 6-12, they were stuck in no mans land and, for better or for worse, both gentlemen knew the team needed a definitive identity that would send them in one direction or the other. For Casey, the aftermath of this momentous trade, beginning with an upset victory over the Lakers that night, would alter the course of his future with the club. Had the Raptors bottomed out the way many thought they might, Caseys time in Toronto would have likely been numbered. The same could be said for Kyle Lowry. DeMar DeRozan, Amir Johnson, Terrence Ross, and the list goes on, they all would have been made expendable. For me, believe it or not, I looked at it as, hey, this is an opportunity to really try to mould this team, Casey said. We were a young team at the time, we didnt know which way we were going to go, were we going to go down low or were we going to take off? The trade would become official the following afternoon. Toronto received Patrick Patterson, Greivis Vasquez, Chuck Hayes and John Salmons in return for Gay, Acy and Gray. Quickly, this group came together in a way few could have predicted. It was the perfect storm. The four former Kings players brought an air of calm and maturity to a locker room that was in desperate need of it at the time. They immediately replenished the second unit, while Salmons would be used to acquire Lou Williams and further solidify Torontos bench over the summer. With Gay - a high usage, low efficiency Raptor - out of the picture, others have blossomed in expanded roles. The offence is now tailored around the strengths of Lowry and DeRozan, who have both grown into All-Stars. Terrence Ross has gone from spare part off the bench to reliable rotation player. As Casey says, It put people in place. There was and still is a clear pecking order. Suddenly the pieces fit and chemistry, both on and off the floor, became the teams calling card. They have gone 58-27 since that night in L.A., now a full year ago, good for the best record in the Eastern Conference over that span, and they havent looked back. We took off, Casey said - his team hasnt lost three straight games since the deal was consummated. Guys committed to everything, they did a great job of playing hard, playing committed, playing together. We established our identity at that time of playing hard. And thats who weve got to be. It was, do we have enough to compete to win? That was the biggest question and we did. I wouldnt say it was easy because nobody knew it was going to turn out the way it did. On Monday, they celebrated the one-year anniversary of their franchise-altering deal by overcoming yet another demon. Despite their fourth-quarter prowess, they have struggled to close games, especially those which go into extra time. The Raptors were just 1-7 in overtime games dating back to the beginning of last season. They had not won an OT contest at home since 2009, having dropped their last 10. Without the injured DeRozan, who missed his fifth straight game with a torn groin tendon, they pulled it ttogether and made big plays when it mattered most.dddddddddddd They bent, giving up an early 17-point lead, but they didnt break. The one thing I will take is effort and I thought the guys busted their behinds and really gave it to us down the stretch and found a way to win, Casey said after his teams 112-107 OT victory over the Denver Nuggets. Thats all you can ask. We made some mistakes. Thats why they put erasers on pencils. Weve got to make sure we dont make the same mistake multiple times. Again, it was very much a collaborative effort. Lowry (13 points, 13 assists) and Jonas Valanciunas (18 points, 12 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles. Williams scored 26, Patterson 19 and Ross added 16. It does not feel like a year, said Patterson, who made two big shots towards the end of regulation, including the game-tying three-ball that would force overtime with under 30 seconds remaining. It literally feels like I got traded yesterday but as they say, time flies by when youre having fun. Being with these guys, being with this team, this organization, each and every guy in this locker room makes every single day fun. In just 12 months, one trade - overshadowed by Bryants return on the night it was made - has jumpstarted careers, changed lives and altered the trajectory of an entire franchise. Casey and Lowry both signed lucrative contract extensions over the summer, keeping them in Toronto for at least three more years. Patterson and Vasquez also inked new deals. Meanwhile, the Raptors have gone from cautionary tale to a legitimate Eastern Conference force in the blink eye. It was a great move by our management to get that [trade] done, Casey said. It really re-shaped our organization. Casey campaigns for Kyle All-Star voting has not even opened yet but Casey is getting a head start campaigning for his point guard, who many believe was snubbed from the team a year ago. Lowry, named Player of the Week in the East earlier Monday evening, narrowly missed out on the chance to represent the conference last winter when the leagues coaches left him off the roster, selecting DeRozan as a reserve instead. This time around, Casey thinks it shouldnt come down to the coaches vote and wants to see fans put Lowry in as a starter when balloting opens later this month. Hes playing at a big time level, hes playing at an All-Star level, Casey said of Lowry. He deserves to be an All-Star this year. I hope our fans are getting out their pencils, 15-25 ballots apiece and voting. So lets make sure we get him on the All-Star team, because he deserves it. For real, hes one of the top point guards in the NBA and he deserves to be on that team. The 28-year-old is continuing to make his case and is also starting to get recognized for it. Coming off a career-best 39-point performance in Utah on Wednesday, Lowry received Eastern Conference Player of the Week honours for games played from Dec. 1-7. Its the third time hes won the weekly award and second as a Raptor. Its a great honour, he said ahead of Mondays game. Im very honoured to get this award but its all because of my teammates and my coaching staff letting me do my job and supporting me. Lowry has taken his game, already trending in an All-Star direction, to a new level in the absence of DeRozan. Leading Toronto to a 2-1 record last week, he averaged an NBA-best 29.3 points on 49 per cent shooting to go along with 8.7 assists. With DeRozan out indefinitely, Lowrys scoring average has increased by over 10 points per contest (from 18.6 to 29.3), while shooting a similar percentage and recording more assists. I just got to go out there and do my job, he said. Im very comfortable even when DeMar is there. Im always going to be comfortable in my own skin. So I know what I can do and I know what they want me to do and need me to do. Assuming Lowry maintains this pace, he should be a lock to become an All-Star for the first time in his nine-year career, but getting voted in as a starter will be challenge given the strength of his position in the East. Derrick Rose and Rajon Rondo have both returned from injury this season and they, along with John Wall and Kyrie Irving - the MVP of last years game, are all former All-Stars with more national marketability. I think so, Lowry said, asked if point guard is the deepest position in the NBA. I think every single night its a challenge for the point guards, offensively and defensively. Youve got guys that are really good in this league at the point guard position. So every night, you have to be mentally and physically prepared to go after it.
