Saskatchewan pair skaters Paige Lawrence, 24, Kennedy, Sask. Jordan Bell Jersey ., and Rudi Swiegers, 26, Kipling, Sask., have ended their nine-year partnership. Lawrence and Swiegers achieved a lifelong dream of being Olympians earlier this year when they competed at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Lawrence and Swiegers are four-time Canadian bronze medalists (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014). In 2010 they won their first international medal, a bronze at Skate Canada International. That same season they also won the bronze medal at the 2011 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships. The team trained in Virden, Manitoba with coach Patricia Hole and in Florida with Lyndon Johnston. In 2014 they qualified to compete for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi and placed 14th. They then went on to place 12th at the 2014 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Japan. "Im so thankful for all the opportunities and adventures that Rudi and I have had the chance to experience throughout our nine-year career together. It was amazing to fulfill our dream of competing at the Olympics and world championships and I have never been happier than I was while skating those programs," said Lawrence. "We have reached a point now where we both want different things and I wish Rudi all the health, happiness, and continued success in whatever path he follows." Lawrence continued, "I would like to say thank you to my coaches Patty Hole and Lyndon Johnston for their unwavering commitment and belief in us, my support team back home for always being there for me, and to all our fans for cheering us on and sharing in this incredible journey. I am so grateful!" Lawrence is looking to find a new partner and continue skating but is keeping an open mind to whatever life may throw her way. "Im so glad to have had the opportunity to skate with Paige and represent Saskatchewan nationally and internationally. One of my greatest joys is that weve been able to succeed and achieve our goals while staying true to our small town roots; proving that you dont need to move away to large centers to train," said Swiegers. "Id like to personally thank Patricia Hole and Lyndon Johnston for everything they have done for me, untold hours on and off the ice. Their dedication to me as a person and an athlete has been paramount in making me the man I am today." Swiegers finished, "I am truly grateful for all the sport has given me. This isnt goodbye for me but rather see you later!" Swiegers is taking a year off from competitive skating for personal reasons. NEW YORK -- Los Angeles Galaxy coach Bruce Arena has been suspended for one game after going on the field during last Sundays match against the Portland Timbers. Baker Mayfield Jersey . Galaxy forward Robbie Keane appeared to score the equalizer early in stoppage time but he was called offsides. Both Keane and Landon Donovan had an animated argument with officials while Arena shouted from the sidelines. Arena also confronted the referees on the field after the match, which the Timbers won 1-0. The MLS Disciplinary Committee determined Arena left his technical area and entered the field of play, which results in an automatic one-game suspension under league policy. Arena will miss the Galaxys match Sunday against Chivas USA. PRETORIA, South Africa -- The judge in Oscar Pistorius trial ruled out a murder conviction for the double-amputee Olympian Thursday in the shooting death of his girlfriend but said he was negligent, raising the possibility hell be convicted of culpable homicide. Caleb Sturgis Chargers Jersey . The verdict in the case that has riveted much of South Africa and the world is expected on Friday when Judge Thokozile Masipa reconvenes the judgment phase, climaxing the trial that began in March. If Pistorius is acquitted of murder, he could still be sent to jail for a maximum of 15 years if convicted of culpable homicide, which is the killing of someone through reckless or negligent behaviour, although five years in prison is a guideline when a firearm is used. The red-robed Masipa, sitting in the dais and looking down at Pistorius and the packed courtroom, said she felt Pistorius acted negligently when he fired four times through a toilet door in his home in the pre-dawn hours of Valentines Day last year. In a moment of high-drama, Masipa then stopped reading out her verdict in the six-month-long trial and adjourned until Friday. Because there is no trial by jury in South Africa, Masipa is expected to explain exactly why she and her two legal aides came to the decision they have before the judge issues the verdict. "I am of the view that the accused acted too hastily and with excessive force," Masipa said of Pistorius actions on the fatal night. She said the prosecution had not proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Pistorius committed premeditated murder. She also ruled out a lesser murder charge. As she spoke, Pistorius began sobbing quietly on the wooden bench, his shoulders shaking. Murder is an illegal, intentional killing. A premeditated, or planned, murder would carry a heavier sentence in the event of a conviction. The world-famous athlete has acknowledged firing the shots through the toilet door in his home, hitting Steenkamp in the head, arm and hip area with hollow-point bullets from his 9 mm pistol. He said he mistook her for an intruder and denied murder, but the judge said Pistorius still could have taken other action, like calling the police or security at his housing estate. "Did the accused fail to take steps he should have taken? Yes," Masipa said. "He failed to take any steps to avoid the death." The prosecution alleged that the athlete intentionally killed his girlfriend, a model and budding reality TV star, after a loud nighttime argument heard by neighbours. Masipa said there were "just not enough facts" to support the finding of premeditated murder or the lesser murder without pre-planning. "The accused cannot be found guilty of murder," the judge said. At the start of the judgment hearing, Masipa told Pistorius, 27, that he should remain seated on the bench while she read her findings out and until she asked him to stand for the verdict. In her hours-long assessment of witness evidence, she called Pistorius a "very poor witness" who had lost his composure on the stand and was at times "evasive." But Masipa emphasized that did not mean he was guilty of murder. The 66-year-old judge also cast doubt on witness accounts of hearing a womans screams, a key part of the prosecutions case. The defence had argued that it was Pistorius who was screaming in a high-pitched voice after discovering he had fatally shot Steenkamp. Masipa also cited testimony of an acoustics expert called by the defence, saying it cast "serious doubt" on whether witnesses who were hundreds of meters (yards) away in their homes -- as some state witnesses were -- could have differentiated between the screams of a man or a woman. At one point, Masipa said: "I continue to explain why most witnesses got their facts wrong." Masipa also said she was disregarding text messages between Steenkamp and Pistorius that had been entered as evidence. Prosecutors had submitted text messages that showed tension between them while the defence submitted messages that indicated mutual affection. That evidence, the judge said, doesnt prove anything. "Normal relationships are dynamic and unpredictable most of the time, while human beings are fickle," she said. Pistorius faced 25 years to life in prison if convicted of premeditated murder. He also faced a minimum of 15 years in jail if found guilty of murder without pre-planning. Pistorius is charged with murder, two counts of unlawfully firing a gun in a public place in unrelated incidents and one count of illegal possession of ammunition. Before Thursdays session began, Pistorius hugged his brother Carl, who was seated in a wheelchair because of leg injuries suffered in a recent car crash. The parents of Steenkamp were also in the packed gallery. Other members of Pistorius family, including his father Henke, sat behind him. If Pistorius is convicted on any charge, the case will be postponed until a later sentencing hearing. Mike Pouncey Chargers Jersey . The alley-oop looked easy -- just like everything else after halftime for the Miami Heat. James scored 32 points, Wade added 22 points and eight assists, and the Heat trailed by 11 early in the second half before running away to a 107-88 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday night. Justin Jones Jersey . -- Syracuse was dangerously close to letting another less talented opponent pull off the upset when C.WASHINGTON -- The Washington Nationals winning streak ended at a team record-tying 10 games Friday night when rookie Joe Panik hit his first major league home run and sent the San Francisco Giants to a 10-3 romp. Panik went 4 for 5 in his first four-hit game, highlighted by his three-run shot to centre field. Tim Hudson and four relievers quieted bats of the Nationals, who apparently dont have an inexhaustible supply of comeback wins and last-at-bat heroics. During their success streak, Washington had seven one-run victories, five come-from-behind wins and five walk-offs. Hudson (9-9) allowed one earned run over 5 1-3 innings for his first since win July 19. Javier Lopez, Jean Machi, Sergio Romo and Juan Gutierrez finished the job for the Giants, who have won six of eight. Doug Fister (12-4) threw six innings and uncharacteristically gave up a pair of homers -- Nos. 12 and 13 allowed this season. The Nationals winning run had become suspense baseball theatre at its best, always with a happy ending for the team in red and white. The staff ERA over during the streak was 1.82, and there were regular Gatorade baths for the player who inevitably would get the game-ending hit. Manager Matt Williams found himself having to answer to a promise he made to a television network earlier this season about doing his famous Babe Ruth impersonation if his team won 10 in aa row. Chargers Jerseys. He says hell do it eventually, but that the middle of a pennant race is not "the proper time." Fister looked set to keep it going. He had a 1-0 lead and appeared in little danger when he retired the first two batters of the fourth. He then induced a chopper up the middle from Pablo Sandoval, but the ball bounced so high that it became an infield hit. That was enough to start the game-turning rally. Michael Morse followed with a single, and Panik put the next pitch just right of the 402-foot mark to give the Giants a 3-1 lead. Jayson Werths solo homer led off the fourth to cut the Nationals deficit to one, but Buster Posey matched him in the sixth to make it 4-2. Travis Ishikawa added insurance with a two-run double in the eighth, and the Giants pounded Ross Detwiler for four runs in the ninth. TRAINERS ROOM Giants: 1B Brandon Belt (concussion) was moved from the seven-day disabled list to the 15-day DL. He hasnt played since Aug. 6. Nationals: OF Nate McLouth had surgery on the torn labrum in his right shoulder. "It went fine and its all put back together," Williams said. The Nationals expect McLouth recover in time for spring training. UP NEXT San Franciscos Tim Lincecum (10-8, 4.48 ERA) faces Jordan Zimmermann (8-5, 2.97) on Saturday in the second game of the three-game series. Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork. Trenton Cannon Jets Jersey .com) - Not many players are successful in defending their title in golf tournaments. Ryan Moore joined that club on Sunday at the CIMB Classic thanks to some perfectly executed strategy. Moore entered the final round tied for the lead but quickly found himself two strokes behind playing partner Kevin Na. Na birdied three of the first four holes, while Moore had birdied the second. Moore inched within one as they headed to the back nine and the two were tied with five holes to play. At the driveable par-4 14th, Moore teed off first, and curiously choose to lay up off the tee. Na blasted his drive just over the green, but seemingly had the easier chance at birdie. It was Moore who made birdie, which helped him pull away from Na. Moore nearly holed his second as his approach shot landed within a foot of the hole just right of the cup and stopped about a foot away on the left side. Na, whose chip shot on the 14th ran well by the hole, failed to make his birdie putt and fell one behind when Moore kicked in his short birdie try. It was the perfect match play strategy, and that was how the final few holes were shaping up, a match play battle. On 14 there, Kevin hit a great drive that looked almost like a 2-putt for birdie and I had laid up, but that was my strategy all along. Thats where I was comfortable with that pin, and to hit a great wedge shot in there was a perfect, Moore explained. I laid up exactly where I needed to - perfect, full sand wedge (distance). Just couldnt have had a nicer shot and almost ended up making that one. The strategy for Moore was to put pressure on Nas chip and with his near- perfect approach shot, that is exactly what he did. Moore made it two in a row as he also birdied the 15th. After a bogey at 16, Moore stuffed his second shot at the 17th within a foot once again. That birdie pushed him four clear of Na, who made double-bogey at the 17th as his tee shot was never found right of the fairway. Reverting to a match play mind-set is easy for Moore, who had one of the great summers an amateur golfer can have in 2004. Among his match play victories that summer were the U.S. Amateur Championship, the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and the Western Amateur Championship. He was the first player ever to win the U.S. Amateur and Public Links in the same summer. The mind-set in match play is to put pressure on your opponent. Moore executed his plan to precision on Sunday. Maybe hell get a chance to do the same one day at the Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup. RARE FINISH ON THE LPGA It is a rare occurrence when the top-three players in the world rankings are playing in the same event. It is an even rarer occurrence when they finish 1-2-3 on the leaderboard. On the PGA Tour, you might see the top three together at 11 events a year - four majors, three World Golf Championship and four FedExCup playoff events - but not many more than that. The current top three in the mens world rankings have played 11 events together this season, though not the aforementioned 11. The top-three ranked LPGA Tour players - Inbee Park, Stacy Lewis and Lydia Ko - have been among the top three spots in the world rankings most of the season. There are no WGCs on the LPGA and no playoffs, either, but there are five majors. The five majors were among the 16 times those three players have played the same event this year. However, the Fubon LPGA Taiwan Championship was the first time this season they finished first, second and third on the leaderboard. Park, Lewis and Ko have all had such stellar seasons. In the 16 events they have all played in, the trio have all finished in the top 10 at five events. The closest they had been to finishing 1-2-3 was at the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic, where Ko won, Lewis finished second and Park tied for third. Being among the top finishers every week helps, too. Lewis, Park and Ko are first, second and tied for third among top-10 finishes on the LPGA Tour this year. Lewis is the old lady of the group at the ripe of age of 29. That means the LPGA Tour is in good hands for many years to come. MINI-TIDBITS - According to a Golf Channel report, members of this years losing U.S. Ryder Cup team have contacted Fred Couples to ask him to be the next captain. Couples has gone 3-0 as the Presidents Cup captain and is a past major champion. He fits the old criteria the PGA of America used to look for in its captains, so well see if this happens. Truthfully, there is no reason it shouldnt happen. - Miguel Angel Jimenez had a Tin Cup-like moment this past weekend at the BMW Masters. The Spaniard rinsed four shots in the water on the par-4 ninth. Jimenez posted a 9-over 13 on that hole en route to a 16-over 88 in the final round. He did win three times earlier this year, twice on the European Tour and once on the Champions Tour. SAN FRANCISCO -- Now that he has a stock tied to his football career, San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis is thinking more like a CEO looking out for his shareholders interests, as well as for himself. Mike Hughes Jersey . Thats among the reasons why Davis wants the 49ers to pay him more money even though he still has two years still left on his current contract. The deal, originally signed in 2010, calls for him to make about $10 million through the National Football Leagues 2015 season. "I feel like its the right time to get an extension," Davis said Wednesday in an interview with The Associated Press. His remarks came shortly before the 49ers announced they had given their star quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, a six-year contract extension through the 2020 season for a reported $110 million. If Davis secures a longer contract too, it will be a boon for investors who bought a stake in his football career through an unusual tracking stock from Fantex Inc. The San Francisco company paid Davis $4 million in return for 10 per cent of his future earnings from football, commercial endorsements and other jobs that he may get during the remainder of his life because of his success in sports. Investors who own any of the 421,000 shares of Fantex tracking stock tied to Davis will also benefit from his success through dividends and potential appreciation in the stocks price. Davis tracking stock climbed $1.20 Wednesday to $11.20, slightly above its initial public offering price of $10. The shares have traded as high as $12.50 since their debut on Fantexs online exchange in late April. The IPO minted Davis, an eight-year veteran of the 49ers, as the first professional athlete to be traded like a stock. "Everyone loves me right now," Davis said. "They just want to talk to me. They want to hug me. ...You get a lot of people who say, Ive got stock in you." Although Fantex completed the IPO of the tracking stock five weeks ago, U.S. securities regulations prohibited Davis from publicly discussing the investment until Wednesday. Not long after he was able to talk about the stock, Davis said he fielded calls from 49er teammates Justin Smith, Vance McDonald and C.J. Spillman inquiring about his arrangement with Fantex. For now, business comes before football for Davis, who is considered to be among the best tight ends in the game. He caught a career-best 13 touchdowns last season. But Davis, 30, already has played nearly three times longer than the average NFL career of three seasons. He said he wants to play "until my toes fall off" and hopes to spend his entire career with the 49ers. The big question now is whether the 49ers will acquiesce to his demands for a longer contract. As part of his negotiating tactics, Davis skipped the 49ers voluntary team workouts this week. His absence cost him a $200,000 bonus. Davis will be aiming to make that money back in his contract extension, although he declined to say how much he is seeking. In an appraisal made leading up to the IPO, Fantex predicted Davis would land at least one more football contract worth $33 million. While Davis negotiates with the 49ers, Fantex is trying to sell tracking stocks tied to the careers of two other NFL players: Buffalo Bills quarterback EJ Manuel and Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Mohamed Sanu. PRETORIA, South Africa -- South Africa laboured to a 13-6 win over Argentina on the opening day of the Rugby Championship on Saturday in a game spoiled by driving rain and a water-soaked field. The Springboks scored a second-minute try through scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar before the rain poured down at Loftus Versfeld to make it a match full of errors. Both teams preferred to kick rather than attack with ball in hand. South Africa flyhalf Handre Pollard landed a conversion and a penalty and Morne Steyn added a second-half penalty to keep the home team ahead throughout, but not without a fight. Argentina is yet to win in 13 games in the championship, but scrummed better than South Africa and continually disrupted its lineout. The Pumas points came from two penalties by Nicolas Sanchez. CHICAGO -- This time, the Chicago Cubs were shut down by Mat Latos. Starlin Castro had an RBI single for Chicagos only run in a 4-1 loss to Latos and the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. The Cubs began the day with a .232 team batting average, which was next to last in the National League. They managed just six hits in the series finale against Cincinnati. "The story for us has been that were not scoring enough runs for the starting pitchers and for this bullpen," catcher John Baker said. "Its frustrating for us position players." Its also frustrating for first-year manager Rick Renteria. "Theyre all chipping away at their approaches, but were facing some pretty good chuckers too," he said. "We just obviously werent able to generate a whole lot of runs." Edwin Jackson (5-8) allowed four runs and six hits in 5 1-3 innings for Chicago, which has dropped four of five. Starlin Castro had two hits and drove in a run. "Its a tough lineup. Theyre going to make you work," Jackson said. "I thought for the most part I was able to contain them until the sixth inning. They kind of busted it open a little bit." With the wind blowing in on a cold summer night, Devin Mesoracos five-game homer streak came to an end. The Reds catcher was tied with Adam Dunn, Ken Griffey Jr., Johnny Bench, George Crowe and Ted Kluszewski for the franchise record. Latos (1-0) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings in his third start after beginning the season on the disabled list. It was his first win since Sept. 2 against St. Louis. Latos was coming off a frustrating no-decision against Toronto, when he was staked to an 8-0 lead and was unable to hold on. He gave up five runs and nine hits in 5 2-3 innings as the Blue Jays rallied for a 14-9 victory Friday night. Thee Cubs fell to 12-31 against Cincinnati over the last three seasons.dddddddddddd Jonathan Broxton pitched a perfect eighth and Aroldis Chapman finished for his 14th save in 15 chances. The call was upheld after Renteria called for a review, and Chapman struck out pinch-hitter Mike Olt to end the game. Cincinnati went ahead to stay with three runs in the sixth. Todd Frazier scored from first on Joey Vottos opposite-field double to left. After Mesoracos single, Jay Bruce lined a double off third baseman Luis Valbuenas glove to drive in Votto. Jackson struck out Chris Heisey before James Russell came in, and Skip Schumaker executed a perfect suicide squeeze to give the Reds a 4-1 lead. "It was the first one in my life. College, big leagues, you name it," said Schumaker, who also had two doubles in the game. "I saw the sign. It worked out." Bruce put the Reds in front with a two-out double down the right-field line in the first, scoring Frazier from second. Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Christian Ehrhoff scored with 1:50 remaining to snap a tie and lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. Evgeni Malkin and Brandon Sutter also scored for the Penguins, who bounced back from a 3-0 shutout at the hands of Vancouver on Thursday and won for the third time in their last four games. It was important to have a (good) rebound game, said Penguins coach Mike Johnston. We feel we didnt play our best (on Thursday). Marc-Andre Fleury made 27 saves, including two in the closing moments, in the victory. Milan Michalek and Mika Zibanejad scored second-period goals for Ottawa, which has lost five in a row and seven of its last eight. Craig Anderson stopped 30 shots in defeat, but had little chance on Ehrhoffs winner. The Penguins worked for the puck deep and Sidney Crosby emerged with it along the left boards. He backhanded a cross-ice pass to an unchecked Ehrhoff, who moved into the right circle alone and blasted a shot from the dot into the upper right corner of the net for his second goal of the season. Fleury kept the Penguins in front with 1:19 to play when he stopped a deflected shot and stuck out the glove to deny Bobby Ryans rebound from the doorstep. Malkin gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead just 4:17 into the game, shortly after he exited the penalty box after serving a roughing minor. He picked up the puck at center ice, raced into the Ottawa zone on a breakaway and made neat move from the backhand to the forehand as he approached the crease and slipped a shot just inside the left post. Anderson remained on the ice for a time after Malkin crashed into him, but stayed in the game and turned aside the other 12 shots he faced in the first period to keep the Senators down only one. Ottawa then scored twice in the first half of the second period to move in front. Michalek tipped an Erik Karlsson point shot past Fleury just 73 seconds into the stanza on a power play and Zibanejad scored from the slot off a nice feed from Ryan at the 8:44 mark. The Penguins picked up a late power play and tied it just 1:57 before the end of the second when Sutter deflected Olli Maattas shot from the left boards. We competed and worked hard and thats what you have to do, said Crosby. Getting that late goal in the second period was big and allowed us to come back in the third. Game Notes Pittsburghs Craig Adams picked up an assist on the winning goal and played in his 314th consecutive game to set a franchise record, surpassing the old mark of 313 set by Ron Schock ... Pittsburgh went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Ottawa cashed in once on five chances with the extra skater ... The Penguins improved to 15-1-2 when scoring at least three goals ... Pittsburghs Zach Sill was given a game misconduct just 3:23 into the contest when he leveled Ottawas Kyle Turris with what appeared to be a clean shoulder hit to the chest, although the officials called it interference for what they deemed to be a little late ... Pittsburgh improved to 5-1-1 in its last seven against Ottawa and 3-0-1 in its last four at home against the Senators. Haloti Ngata Jersey . Todays semifinal match-up features St. Louis Blues forward T.J. Oshie taking on Detroit Red Wings forward Tomas Tatar and Thomas Hertl of the San Jose Sharks. Oshie - as he proved at the Sochi Olympics this year - is comfortable going it alone. After a fake slapper from Alex Steen backs the Tampa Bay Lightning off, Oshie grabs the puck and starts making headway towards the net. Oshie then splits Victor Hedman and Teddy Purcell before avoiding a spinning stick-check from Martin St. Louis. Losing his feet, Oshie finishes it with a backhand shovel that beats big Ben Bishop. Tatar eliminates his defenders by running them clean into one another. Streaking over the blue line, Tatar feels a pair of Dallas defenders closing in on him. As Brenden Dillon moves in for the big hit, Tatar hesitates and the Stars d-man catches teammatee Cameron Gaunce square on, sending both players flying.dddddddddddd Tatar resumes his drive and finishes with a nifty backhand shovel that goes off Kari Lehtonen and in. Hertl – in just his third career game – had a historic night, scoring four goals at just 19 years old. The fourth goal, however, was something to behold. Streaking in from the left boards, Hertl barrels in on Martin Biron looking to cap an already impressive night. He pulls Biron to his right, bringing the puck back through his legs. Reaching between with his stick, he gets under the shot for a wrister that goes top left corner. The young Czechs effort produces a goal brimming with confidence beyond his teenage years. The Ottawa Senators owner voiced his disappointment over the teams performance this season in a conference call with media Tuesday, and said changes could be coming. Melnyk said he and general manager Bryan Murray are "in the process of evaluating everything, our players, our prospects and our coaching staff." "Definitely not a wholesale change, we just need to show up more often," Melnyk added. "I think we need leadership. I think we need accountability from top to bottom and thats more of a mindset and it could also reflect the maturity of the team and as they mature, dont kid yourself, because I did some exit interviews and these are not happy campers." While there had been speculation that head coach Paul MacLean could be relieved of his duties, that doesnt appear to be the case. "I think its pretty certain, well I can assure you Pauls our coach," said Melnyk. "And hes going to be our coach going into next year, but were evaluating everything within the hockey operations, but as far as the leadership is concerned thats staying put." Thats not to say management was overly impressed with MacLeans performance this past season. "They should have done better," said Murray of the coaching staff. "Unless you win a championship I think you can say that about everybody. I think there were some stages in the year where maybe a different decision could have been made." On Monday MacLean admitted that he went into the season with the belief that he needed to be more demanding of his players, and Murray said it probably wasnt the wisest strategy. "My note to him today was the players like the old Paul," Murray said. "They like the guy that sat and talked to them, treated them in a more easy-going fashion, that taught, not confronted. "There were some mistakes made obviously. You dont go to some of your better players and confront them early in the year and expect change. The change is usually in the negative form. I think what Paul did two years leading up to this was a real strong indication of the type of coach he is. I think as you go through your career you learn lots of things and I think its a stage that hell be much better because of it." Murrays biggest decision in the off-season could be whether or not to move captain Jason Spezza. Spezza has one more year remaining on a contract that has a cap hit of US$7 million, but a salary of $4 million. Speculation of Spezza being traded surfaced at the trade deadline and one has to wonder if the Senators feel now is the time to make a significant change. "I think Jason understands what his role was and is," said Melnyk. "Hes a professional. He understands youre here today, could be gone tomorrow. "Its very dependent on what other pieces we have to put together and I think at the end of the day hes just one of 20 plus players that participated this year and we just didnt get it done. " Murray said Spezza was one of five players going into the final year of a contract and that all five, in addition to this years three unrestricted free agents, would be evaluated.dddddddddddd "Im not sure why Jason is the single guy here being evaluated," Murray said. "Number one I guess maybe he wore the C and thats part of it, but we, I believe, have five guys going into their last year and decisions have to be made and they will be made at the right time." The Senators actually have six players entering the final year of their contract including Spezza. Bobby Ryan, Clarke MacArthur, Erik Condra, Marc Methot and Craig Anderson will all be looking for new contracts next season. At this point it seems Ryan could be the first to re-sign as both parties seem eager to come to terms on a new agreement. Milan Michalek, Ales Hemsky and Matt Kassian are all unrestricted free agents this season and it appears Michalek could be the only one returning. Murray said Kassian isnt in his plans and he didnt believe the Senators were in Kassians plans. As for Hemsky, it doesnt appear he will return. Michalek has expressed an interest in returning and its likely term and money will play a factor. The Senators have a number of young players who will be pushing for playing time and they want to ensure theres room. Murray said Mark Stone, who played 19 games this season and had eight points (4 goals, 4 assists), now looks like an NHL player and was impressed with Jean-Gabriel Pageaus play late in the season. He also mentioned that Curtis Lazar looks to be NHL ready and will be pushing for a roster spot as well as a few others who are currently playing in Binghamton. In addition, Murray said the Senators would like to find a tougher forward. The Senators have three restricted free agents, Mike Hoffman, Eric Gryba and Robin Lehner, that Murray will need to make decisions on. Lehner, 22, will likely be the priority, considering Anderson will be heading into the final year of his contract. "I still think to be a good team in the league you need two goaltenders," Murray said. "You need both that can win games for you. I think Robins very close (to being a number one goalie). I think if we gave him the stick and said go in the net and play every night I think he could win a lot of hockey games for us." Financially the Senators are in good shape, but they dont anticipate significantly increasing their salary structure. "Its very, very easy to increase payroll, any idiot can do it and a lot of idiots do and they overspend and they go to the cap and Ive done it twice and both times it didnt make an impact," Melnyk said. The Senators owner says he prefers to spend money on various resources that can be used in the development of players on the roster and in the minors. Notes: Much was made last Saturday when Kassian didnt dress for the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, but Murray said a decision had been made earlier in the day when a call between he and Toronto GM Dave Nonis took place. Nonis wanted to call up a young player, but was concerned that if Kassian was in the lineup things could get physical and so Murray assured Nonis he wouldnt play Kassian. HOUSTON -- All-Star catcher Jason Castro of the Astros has left Mondays game against Minnesota with a sprained right knee. Castro appeared to injure himself on the swing on a foul ball in the second inning. He remained at the plate and hit an RBI single on the next pitch. He handled this one with no problem The right-hander waited more than 2 hours to make his start Tuesday night, but once he got on the mound, he was on top of his game. Beckett allowed two hits in six shutout innings, Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run single and the Dodgers defeated the Cincinnati Reds 6-1. "Sitting around today was tough," the 34-year-old Beckett said. "Im not 23 anymore. I was ready to go at 7:10. I spent a lot of time in the weight room trying to stay loose. I felt fine." Beckett (4-3), who had endured two consecutive 2-1 losses since his no-hitter May 25 in Philadelphia, finished with seven strikeouts and one walk. He also hit a batter with a pitch. "Actually, I felt like it was his cleanest game since the no-hitter," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "The ball was coming out better. He had a better changeup, and he kept the ball down." Beckett echoed Mattinglys assessment. "I felt like it was a clean outing," he said. He also enjoyed better support from his offence, which scored more runs in one inning than it had in his previous two starts combined. Yasiel Puig, Adrian Gonzalez, Andre Ethier and Justin Turner led the Los Angeles lineup with two hits apiece. Beckett got into the act with a single of his own for the Dodgers, who have won three straight and four of five. "Joshs performance today is what hes been giving us all year," Ethier said. "We havent been producing many runs for him." Mike Leake, reached for a season-high five runs in his previous start Thursday against San Francisco, allowed five more and a season-high nine hits in 5 1-3 innings. Leake (3-6), who lost seven games last season, had seven strikeouts and one walk. "It was a weird night," said Leake, bothered by a stiff neck in his previous three starts. "I missed some spots. I got some groundballs, but they found holes. I didnt do my job today." Reds first baseman Joey Votto, aactivated from the 15-day disabled list before the game after missing 23 games with a strained quadriceps in his left knee, went 1 for 3 with a single, two strikeouts and a walk.dddddddddddd After the start was delayed by rain for 2 hours, 5 minutes, the Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the second on Gonzalezs leadoff double and Ethiers one-out double. Beckett helped himself in a three-run fifth after Turner led off with a single. With one out, the pitcher faked a bunt and hit a chopper over charging third baseman Todd Frazier for his third hit in 23 at-bats this season. "I saw him charging," Beckett said. "He was playing so shallow already. I took a shot." Turner scored on Dee Gordons double, and Ramirez drove in both runners with a single to right field. That pretty much gave Los Angeles control. The largest deficit overcome by the Reds to win this season is two runs. Cincinnati manager Bryan Price was impressed with the Dodgers approach. "They did a nice job of putting the ball in play," Price said. "They ran some balls through the infield. They had enough team speed to get some good reads off the bat and score off that line drive to right." Los Angeles added a run in the sixth on Matt Kemps one-out walk and back-to-back singles by Ethier and Turner, who has four consecutive multihit games. Puig singled, stole second and scored on Gonzalezs second double in the seventh. Ethier is hitting .467 (7 for 15) with six RBIs against Leake. The Reds avoided being shut out on Jay Bruces leadoff double, Devin Mesoracos infield single and Zack Cozarts one-out RBI single in the seventh. Mesoraco snapped a career-worst, 0-for-19 slump. NOTES: Cozart stayed in the game after being hit in the batting helmet by Becketts pitch in the fifth. ... Ethiers sixth-inning infield single originally was ruled an out, but Mattinglys challenge led to the call being overturned after a replay review. ... HOUSTON -- Oakland rookie Matt McGloin was so good in a victory over the Houston Texans that it raised questions about whether Terrelle Pryor will get his job back when hes healthy. The undrafted free agent threw three touchdown passes in his first NFL start and the Raiders extended Houstons franchise-record skid to eight games with a 28-23 victory on Sunday in coach Gary Kubiaks return from a mini-stroke. Oakland coach Dennis Allen evaded the question when asked if McGloin would remain the starter when Pryor has recovered from a knee injury. "Listen, heres what Im going to do -- Im going to enjoy this win, all right," Allen said. "Were going to go back and well evaluate. But he definitely did a very good job today." McGloin was 18 of 32 for 197 yards. Houstons Case Keenum, also an undrafted free agent, was benched after Houstons offence stalled in the third quarter. McGloin threw touchdown passes of 5, 16 and 26 yards to help the Raiders score their most points of the season. "There is always more to prove and more to do," McGloin said. "I think I got off to a good start, but we will see." Kubiak wasnt on the sidelines, instead coaching upstairs from the booth on doctors orders two weeks after collapsing at halftime of Houstons game against Indianapolis. He benched Keenum for Matt Schaub with Houston trailing by 11 points. Houston cut the lead with two field goals in the fourth quarter and had a chance to take the lead late. But Schaubs pass to Andre Johnson on fourth down from the 8 was broken up in the end zone. Johnson and Schaub were yelling at each other on the field after the play and the screaming match continued on the sidelines, a clear indication of the frustration on a disappointing team that was supposed to contend for a Super Bowl. Johnson said the argument came because the receiver "messed up" and didnt finish the play. "We just exchanged some words," he said. "Its just heat of the moment. Once we came in the locker room, we talked about it, left it alone so Im not worried about that. Me and Matt have played a lot of football together." Schaub also brushed off their disagreement. "Its just emotions, emotions of the game, a culmination of a lot of things, but stuff well keep between us," Schaub said. Kubiak replaced Keenum with Schaub after Houstons first three drives of the second half all ended in punts. Schaub was terrible early this season and hadnt played since Oct. 13, after he was benched following an injury. Keenum threw for 170 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Schaub had 155 yards passing. Kubiak wouldnt say who would start next week. Houston punted on Schaubs first drive before settling for a 26-yard field goal on the second when the offence stalled after getting a first down at the 10. A 30-yard field goal cut the lead to 28-23 with about eight minutes remaining. Rashad Jennings, who was filling in for the injured Darren McFadden, extended Oaklands lead to 28-17 when he plowed over D.J. Swearinger and rumbled 80 yards for a touchdown with 2:26 left in the third quarter. It was the longest run of his career and he finished with 150 yards rushing. The Raiders regained the lead when Mychal Rivera grabbed a 26-yard touchdown reception to make it 21-17 in the third quarter. Keenum scrambled to escape the grasp of Lamarr Houston and launched a 42-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Graham to cut the lead to 14-7 early in the second quarter. Houston tied it at 14 when Keshawn Martin let a punt bounce off the grass and his chest before scooping it up and dashing 87 yards for a touchdown about three minutes before halftime. It was the longest punt return for a score in franchise history. Randy Bullock made his first field goal of 50 or more yards with a 51-yarder to give Houston a 17-14 lead just before halftime. Graham had the ball stripped by Charles Woodson and fumbled after a catch on Houstons first drive. Phillip Adams recovered it and 26 yards. McGloins first career touchdown came when he hit Denarius Moore on a 5-yard slant to put Oakland up 7-0. Houstons second miscue came when Keenum threw his first career interception as he was being hit by Stacy McGee. It broke a streak of 105 pass attempts without an interception for Keenum. The Raiders immediately took advantage of the error when McGloin connected with Rod Streater for a 16-yard touchdown on the next play to make it 14-0. NOTES: Former Presidents George W. Rodriguez scored one of the best goals of the tournament and added a second to put Colombia into the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time with a 2-0 win over Uruguay on Saturday -- setting up a meeting with the host nation. Rodriguez added to his growing list memorable moments in Brazil when he gave his team the lead with a long-range volley as he turned in the 28th minute. He scored the second from close range shortly after the break as Colombia dominated an Uruguay side that sorely missed banned striker Luis Suarez. "I think now the toughest is coming up," Rodriguez said of the quarterfinal match against Brazil. "Im happy because we are making history and as a young man I dreamed of being here. And of course we want to do even more." Rodriguez now has a tournament-leading five goals in Brazil and further enhanced his status as perhaps the World Cups biggest revelation. In the absence of injured star Radamel Falcao, the Monaco winger has become the focal point of a Colombia team that won all three of its group games with impressive attacking play. Uruguay, meanwhile, simply couldnt find anyone to fill the absence of Suarez. The team struggled badly in attack and replacement striker Diego Forlan was substituted in the 53rd after a disappointing performance in what was likely his final World Cup appearance. Colombia is playing its first World Cup since 1998 and has already achieved its best-ever result. "Congratulations to all the Colombian people," said coach Jose Pekerman, who is from Argentina. "The people in Colombia deserve this." Colombia will play Brazil in the quarterfinals on July 4 in Fortaleza after the host nation beat Chile in a penalty shootout earlier Saturday. But Rodriguez showed once again that the Brazilians have every reason to be wary of Colombia. The opener was his most spectacular goal yet. He chested the ball down with his back to goal well outside the area and in one fluid motion turned around and fired a left-foot volley that went off the underside of the crossbar and into the net. It was a goal that came seemingly out of nowhere and provided another example of the technique and creativity that has madee Rodriguez one of the standout players of the tournament.dddddddddddd Uruguay defender Alvaro Pereira tried to clear the ball with a diving header, but it went straight to Abel Aguilar, who headed it forward toward Rodriguez. His manoeuvr only took a split second and left goalkeeper Fernando Muslera flailing helplessly as the ball looped over him and into the net. Rodriguez ran over the corner flag and thrust both hands out to his sides in a "how about that" gesture. "I think he is the best player of the tournament so far," Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said. Rodriguezs second was a perfectly executed team move as Colombia worked the ball over from the right flank to the left, where Pablo Armero sent in a cross that was met by Juan Cuadrado at the far post. Cuadrado headed back across goal toward Rodriguez, who slotted in from just a few yards (meters) out. This time, the entire team ran over the corner flag for a celebratory dance. Tabarez tried to respond with a double substitution, taking off Forlan and Alvaro Pereira for Gaston Ramirez and Cristhian Stuani. That livened up the attack, with goalkeeper David Ospina having to make good saves from Cristhian Rodriguez and Maxi Pereira before diving to push away a shot from Edinson Cavani in the 84th. But in the end Uruguay simply couldnt cope without Suarez, who was banned for four months for biting an opponent in the group-stage victory against Italy that sent the team through to the next round. Suarez also missed Uruguays first game of the tournament, a 3-1 loss to Costa Rica, before scoring both goals in a 2-1 win over England. "We all knew what happened, but we had to forget about it and think positive," Tabarez said. "Suarez is a great player, and I dont need to say it. He is very important. But we knew he wasnt going to play." ------ Lineups: Colombia: David Ospina; Cristian Zapata, Mario Yepes, Pablo Armero, Juan Zuniga; Carlos Sanchez Abel Aguilar, Juan Cuadrado (Fredy Guarin, 81), James Rodriguez (Adrian Ramos, 85); Teofilo Gutierrez (Alexander Mejia, 68), Jackson Martinez. NORMAN, Okla. -- Ryan Spanglers intense play has fueled Oklahomas growth this season. The sophomore forward had 15 points and a career-high 17 rebounds to help the 23rd-ranked Sooners defeat No. 8 Oklahoma State 88-76 on Monday night. Spangler, in his first season playing for Oklahoma after transferring from Gonzaga, has displayed an energy level that has helped change the Sooners from a team that could just score a lot of points into one that held Oklahoma State to 40 per cent shooting. "Ryans kind of been the cornerstone for our growth in the toughness area," Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger said. "I think were getting tougher. I think weve made big strides in that area." It was the first time both teams have entered a "Bedlam" rivalry game ranked since 2005. The Sooners got great efforts from a few unexpected sources. Freshman Jordan Woodard scored 17 of his 18 points in the second half and reserve Tyler Neal added a season-high 15 points for the Sooners (17-4, 6-2 Big 12), who won their fourth straight game and claimed their third win over a ranked conference opponent this season. Woodard averaged just 11 points a game and Neal averaged 5.9 coming into the game. "Thats kind of been the trademark of this team all year long -- different guys, different nights, stepping up and giving us great support," Kruger said. "We beat a great Oklahoma State team. That makes it even more satisfying." Oklahoma shot 46 per cent from the field and made 8 of 17 3-pointers. The Cowboys committed 29 fouls and were outscored 30-15 at the free throw line. Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford said the poor defence and the foul trouble were related. "We didnt defend very much," he said. "When you dont defend, you put yourself in position to foul. Give them credit. They beat us off the dribble. Fouling is usually a product of being out of position." Oklahoma State guard Phil Forte said the team has to handle situations like Mondays better. "We need to quit worrying about the refs and all that and just play," he said. "Move onto the next play. Thats the most important thing." Marcus Smart had 22 points on 6-of-18 shooting and spent much of the game in foul trouble. Forte scored 20 points and made all six of his 3-point tries and Markel Brown added 18 points for the Cowboys (16-4, 4-3). OSUs LeBryan Nash, who scored a career-high 29 points against West Virginia on Saturday, fouled out with eight points in 17 minutes. Oklahoma dominated early as Oklahoma States Smart, Nash and Stevie Clark all committed two fouls in the first 12 minutes. Forte gave the Cowboys some life with two deep 3-pointers in a run that trimmed Oklahomas lead to 32-26. The Sooners extended it to 46-36 on a 3-pointer by Neal with 46 seconds left in the first half, and the Sooners led 46-38 at the break. Neal scored 10 in the first half. Smart played just 6 minutes in the first half and had six points on 2-for-4 shooting. Woodard drained a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to push Oklahomas lead to 53-41, and he later hit a 3-pointer to bump OUs lead to 13. A 3 by Frank Booker increased the Sooners lead to 16 points, then Nash committed his fourth foul with 14:17 remaining, and Clark fouled out with 12:18 to go. A 3-pointer by Smart and a dunk by Brown cut OUs lead to 64-57. Spangler scored on a putback, was fouled by Smart and made the free throw to put the Sooners up 75-62 with just over 6 minutes to play. Oklahoma State cut Oklahomas lead to six, but Woodards 3-pointer with just under 3 minutes left bumped the Sooners lead to 10. "Give them credit," Ford said. "Every time we would make a semi-run at them, they would make a big shot and we would make a silly play." The rematch is Feb. 15 at Oklahoma State. "Theyre a great team," Neal said. "Theyre going to do some good things this year, and were going to have to be ready when we play them in Stillwater." Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Filip Forsberg scored with 1:05 remaining in overtime to lift the Nashville Predators to a 1-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Thanksgiving. The Oilers began overtime on a power play, then were awarded a penalty shot 13 seconds into the extra session when Nashville defenseman Shea Weber closed his hand on the puck while in the crease. Pekka Rinne stretched with his left pad to deny Jordan Eberle at the right post. Moments later, Forsberg spun to shield the puck from an Edmonton player and fired a wrist shot from the left circle past Viktor Fasth. I think we played a really good game today, but unfortunately we couldnt get two points, Fasth said. Rinne made 37 saves to earn his second shutout of the season and 34th of his career. It wasnt our strongest game, but we came through at the end, Rinne said. We kept improving the whole night. The Predators won their third straight game, all beyond regulation, and welcomed back forward Mike Fisher to the lineup. Fisher missed the first 21 games of the season after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon during the summer. Fasth finished with 24 saves for the Oilers, who lost their eighth consecutive game. They are now 0-11-2 against Western Conference teams this season. Nashville appeared to break the scoreless tie with 4:06 left in the second period, but Seth Jones goal was waved off because Paul Gaustad interfered with Fasth. Midterm may still make the Investec Derby line-up despite being found to have sustained a sore hamstring when a disappointing favourite for the Dante Stakes at York last week. The choicely-bred colt, impressive in his previous success at Sandown, had gone into the Dante as the ante-post favourite for the Derby, but failed to fire and came home fifth under Pat Smullen. At first, nothing came to light to explain Midterms performance, but further veterinary examination identified a problem, revealed on Monday night by Lord Grimthorpe, racing manager to the colts owner Prince Khalid Abdullah. He was sore in a hamstring behind. Its not insurmountable, but at least it gives us some explanation as to what happened, he said.We have to wait quite a few days now. Weve got to be sure and from that point of view, its got to be up until the last minute. Hes not a great worker, so its going to be hard to gauge how he is going, but he will certainly have to be sound before he even starts to work again. If were lucky, and he comes right, he can do enough work to satisfy the trainer that he can go. If he doesnt, then theres the King Edward VII to fall back on.Grimthopre admitted to taking some relief at having identified an issue that might explain such a lacklustre performance behind Wings Of Desire in the Dante. It was a bit mystifying as we were very hopeful of a big run, so to find a hamstring... in the whole scale of things it could have been a lot worse, he said.Midterms trainer Sir Michael Stoute confirmed that he was still to rule Midterm out of the Epsom reckoning, while the stable could yet be double-handed in the race with Newbury maiden winner Ulysses, whose dam Light Shift won the Oaks, also still in contention.I want to give him more time to see how he comes out of that race and then make a decision, but its a possibility, he said. TORONTO -- LeBron James going home to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers led to speculation about whether a star NHL player might do the same in the near future. Naturally, Steven Stamkos was at the centre of that speculation. The Tampa Bay Lightning captain and Markham, Ont., native could be an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2016, and the allure of playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs could be there. "Well see what happens. Its a couple years away," Stamkos said Wednesday. "Right now Im focused on what I have to do to win in Tampa, and I think weve really established ourselves as a team that can compete in upcoming years. "For me, thats the important thing is getting a chance to win. It looks like were going to have that chance for a couple years." At the age of 24, Stamkos is one of the most marketable stars in the NHL. He has topped 50 goals in a season twice already and only missed out on representing Canada at the Sochi Olympics because of a broken leg. Stamkos made a run with the Lightning to the Eastern Conference final in 2011, and Tampa Bay was swept by the Montreal Canadiens in this years playoffs. The Stanley Cup is his priority now, something he can legitimately think about with general manager Steve Yzerman piecing together one of the best young teams in the league. "We have a good thing going down in Tampa," Stamkos said at a Coca-Cola ball-hockey promotional event. "We have a great owner, we got a great GM in Steve Yzerman and we got a good young team. I want to win, and hopefully I can do it in Tampa." Stamkos said with the additions of centre Brian Boyle and defenceman Anton Stralman and the re-signing of winger Ryan Callahan, the Lightning are probably better on paper than they were at the end of last season. "We didnt have the finish we wanted to last year, but with the new faces coming in, the expectations are probably set a little higher," he said. Stamkos said chatter about joining the Leafs in two years was "absolutely not" a distraction for him in Tampa, where hell begin his first full season as captain this fall. "I try not to focus about that stuff," he said. "I think thats the great thing about playing in Tampa is hockey isnt the mecca that it is here in Toronto and you can kind of go about your life and kind of get away from the game when you need to." That said, Stamkos added that he loves playing in good hockey markets, including Toronto. "Im from around here and grew up cheering for the Leafs, so any time I get a chance to come back here I enjoy it, and any time I get a chance to play against the Leafs its fun," he said. "Its also fun beating them, too, because a lot of my friends are still Leaf fans." Stamkos is set to make US$13.5 million over the next two seasons. What could be in his not-too-distant future is a contract like the ones Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane signed with the Chicago Blackhawks: $84 million over eight years. "The business part of the game, its growing," Stamkos said. "Obviously the games in good shape, and when that happens the caps going to grow and players are going to get paid more money. Those guys deserve it: Theyre great players in this league, theyve won championships. "Thats the goal for me is to win a championship. You let your play take care of itself on the ice and when its time to re-sign or sign a contract, you back it up with your play." When James left the Miami Heat for the Cavaliers earlier this month, the chance to return to his native Ohio was cited as a prominent reason. James won two NBA titles during his time with the Heat. "He won his championships, he said he always wanted to come home and play, thats where it started," Stamkos said. "Good for him for making that decision." A team that knows him quite well finally gave him a chance. The Bengals signed the right tackle to help fix one of their biggest trouble spots heading toward the post-season. Winston practiced with the Bengals on Wednesday after a rushed evening of trying to learn the playbook. The 31-year-old lineman was released by Seattle during the preseason and didnt get picked up by another team, leaving him to work out at his home in Houston and serve as president of the NFL Players Association. He was starting to think that hed never play again.I was wondering after week two if I was going to get a chance, Winston said Wednesday. You just stick it out, you stick through it. I promised myself that I was going to run this year out and stay shape and be ready and not give up. Im glad I did. Its given me a chance to be here now.Cincinnati (8-3-1) leads the AFC North by a game and a half and is in good shape at most positions, with one notable exception. The Bengals lost right tackle Andre Smith to a tore left triceps suffered two weeks ago during a win in Houston.Marshall Newhouse and Clint Boling alternated at the position during a 14-13 win at Tampa Bay on Sunday. Neither one played well enough to earn the job.Im not going to say its an evaluation mode, offensive co-ordinator Hue Jackson said. I know we have some candidates. Well go through the week and see what is going to give us the best opportunity to play at the highest level. We played a couple of guys there (in Tampa) and based on matchups this week well see whats best for us.Winston started at right tackle for five seasons in Houston and one each in Kansas City and Arizona. He had tryouts with several teams this season, including Minnesota last week. None offered a contract until the Bengals brought him in on Tuesday to see if he was in shape.Left tackle Andrew Whitworth has knowwn Winston since high school and has worked with him in the players union.dddddddddddd Coach Marvin Lewis knows him through his work on the NFLs Competition Committee. We always sat by each other, Lewis said. Im glad we were able to get him signed. He gives us an uplift. He gives us a guy that if called upon to play, he can do it at a high level.Winston spent several hours on Tuesday night trying to learn the offence. The blocking schemes arent much different than what hes experienced, but Cincinnatis terminology is new to him.Whitworth thinks he can help in other ways while he figures things out.The guys played a ton of football, Whitworth said. Hes got some insight on some of the players well probably play and situations that you play in. For now hes another guy that can help with those kinds of things. Anytime you have a guy like him who is a veteran and a leader, its another guy people can look up to for stuff.Winston said that resuming his career wont affect his work with the NFLPA.We have a good staff in Washington that does the day-to-day stuff, he said. If they need me, Im a phone call away. But my focus is here playing and making the push here for the playoffs.Notes: The Bengals signed free agent LB Chris Carter, a fourth-year veteran who played with Pittsburgh from 2011-13. He was waived by Pittsburgh after the preseason, signed with Indianapolis and played in one game, then was waived on Oct. 6. ... CB Adam Pacman Jones sat out practice Wednesday with a concussion.
