PHILADELPHIA – Back troubles limited Randy Carlyle in recent weeks, but the Maple Leafs head coach was back on his feet and busy at draft weekend in Philadelphia. Carlyle, alongside team president Brendan Shanahan and general manager Dave Nonis, continued to hunt for the remainders of a coaching staff, following the dismissal of his three assistant coaches – including long-time no. 2 Dave Farrish – in early May. The Leafs plan on hiring two new assistant coaches to support Carlyle, who received a two-year contract extension after Farrish, Greg Cronin and Scott Gordon were fired. Touching down in the state of Pennsylvania with team personnel on Wednesday, Carlyle has been speaking with prospective candidates all week and throughout the early stages of summer. "We have a criteria," he said of the interview process, minutes before Fridays draft was to begin. "We sat down and we created a few boxes that we felt we needed to fill. "And its typical where youre in an interview process you look for peoples strengths and the experience is always a factor – where theyve worked before or who theyve worked with; have they ever been a head coach before; what programs have they run; what were their jobs with their previous employer; did they run power-play or penalty killing units. Those are the kind of things that typically go into an interview process." Though he managed to hold onto his job, significant alterations to his coaching staff were deemed necessary after a season that rapidly deteriorated into another playoff-less season. Absent answers to the wreckage amid the unraveling, Carlyle has finally digested what took place and is looking to turn the page. But he remains of the view that "compete" was the downfall of a club that tumbled out of a certain playoff position in the final weeks. "We didnt compete enough in the situations that we were presented with and consistently enough," said Carlyle, noticeably relaxed after a stressful season. Change is coming, he understands, and not just to the coaching staff. With a glut of unrestricted free agents – many of whom wont return – and multiple pieces to adjust and rearrange, the Leafs will resemble a different team in the fall. Just how different remains unclear, but it appears that youth should be part of the agenda with Morgan Rielly, Peter Holland, Carter Ashton, Jerry DAmigo, Petter Granberg, Josh Leivo among others in line to either garner more opportunity or earn NHL jobs. "Theyre going to be given more of an opportunity," Carlyle said. "Thats our plan. Our teams not going to be the same coming back. Its as simple as that. With the amount of unrestricted free agents that we have and the make-up of our group we know that some of those players wont be back with our hockey club." A favourite of Carlyle, in spite of his brief Toronto experience, Dave Bolland could be among them. The Leafs have engaged in a back and forth with the Bolland camp – fronted by agent Anton Thun – but have yet to find agreeable terms ahead of July 1st."Its not that were not speaking to each other," Nonis said Thursday, "its at this point we havent been able to find common ground for a deal." Bolland is one among many potential changes for the Leafs, who are also likely to shuffle their bottom-six forward group (with a glut of unrestricted free agents), defence, and backup goaltending position. Adjustment to the core group, following the second regular season collapse in three years, is also a distinct possibility. All of which means a busy offseason ahead for Carlyle and the Toronto management team. Orlando Scandrick Jersey . Paul George (Pacers): Really looked like the All-Star hes been the past few years. Big time 39 point-12 rebound performance in Game #4 vs. the Wizards. Makes seven 3s and is clutch in so many instances for his team. Im not sure if the Pacers are truly back or if the Wizards dont know how to win as the stakes get higher but I will say that George looks back to normal and then some of late and thats a good sign for his club. 2. Chris Paul (Clippers): Yes, hes the best point guard in the game in my book and in spite of the fact that he gets 23 points and 10 assists in Game #4 vs. OKC, youve got to admire his grit and compete level taking on the defensive challenge of guarding Kevin Durant late. Hes an outstanding offensive player yet the thing that stands out to me is his ability to put the clamps on his opponent when need be, regardless of size. Tough competitor and special player. 3. Mirza Teletovic (Nets): Has made 10 3s in the past two games vs the Heat and has them shaking their heads on how to cover him. His stretch 4 game is quite a sight to behold when hes dropping long range shots. He opens the whole floor up for his teammates and has been a steady shooter (37 per cent) this season.dddddddddddd Looks like hes gaining confidence with each passing game. What a steal for GM Billy King. A skilled and tough second unit guy that teams would love to have. 4. Wesley Matthews (Blazers): Normally close to 40 per cent 3-point shooter during the regular season. Rockets and Spurs have made it a point of making him work for every open look he can get on the perimeter while only shooting 31 per cent in the playoffs. His ability to open things up in the two-man game between LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard has been critical to their success. Spacing is such a huge component of getting the matchups you want to be effective. Hes a marked man and the Spurs are making sure he takes tough shots. 5. Miami Heat Formula: Theyve got the best player on the planet in LeBron James yet its what they put around him that counts. Of course, Dwyane Wade is a Hall of Famer and when hes healthy, hes still very good. The stretch ability of this team is remarkable. In the playoffs, theyre shooting 41 per cent from behind the arc. Thats really hard to do. Their spacing and ball movement is impeccable and when you have Ray Allen, Chris Bosh, Mario Chalmers, Norris Cole, James Jones and Shane Battier camping out behind the line, you have to pick your poison; double LeBron and give up 3s or play him single coverage, defend the 3s and hope that LeBron doesnt destroy you. The system works and is well thought out. Fits their personnel to a T. Tough to stop. NEW ORLEANS - The NFL has formally designated New Orleans Jimmy Graham as a tight end for the purposes of his franchise tag value, which is now set at $7.05 million next season unless Graham and the Saints subsequently agree on a long-term deal. The designation was released Monday after the deadline passed for NFL teams to use franchise or transition tags on players becoming free agents. Because Graham often split out from the offensive line as a receiver would, there have been questions concerning whether the NFLs collective bargaining agreement calls for Graham to have a receivers tag, worth $12.1 million. Graham still could file a grievance, leaving an arbitrator to decide which tag is appropriate. Graham caught a team-leading 86 passes for 1,215 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. Wagner, 30, appeared in 36 games for the Blue Jays last season, posting a 2-4 record with a 3.79 earned-run average. He gives Toronto another hard-throwing right-handed option out of the bullpen. "It made sense to get a little more firepower late (in games)," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said before Wednesdays game against the Houston Astros. Wagner played 23 games with Buffalo in 2013 and had 16 saves with a 0.76 ERA. The six-foot 215-pound Minneapolis native has not allowed a run in two appearances with the Bisons this season, earning saves in both outings. Gibbons said Wagner impressed him last season and again this year at spring training. "He came into his own," he said of Wagners performance last year. "He started out in triple-A and put it all together, came up and did a nice job for us. Hes got that big arm. Thats what you like to see coming late in the game. The key for him was he started finding that strike zone consistently. "Thats something that had deserted him in his career until last year. Yeah, we expect him to fill a big role for us." The Toronto bullpen is missing closer Casey Janssen, whos on the 15-day disabled list with a strain in his left abdominal area and lower back. Gibbons said pitching coach Pete Walker thought Janssen looked "really, really good" in a bullpen session earlier in the day. "Hell throw one more side (session) and then well justt see where hes at," Gibbons said of the veteran right-hander.dddddddddddd. "He may go out on a rehab (assignment) after that. If hes not really good, then hell throw another one." "Pete said he really picked it up today compared to his last one," Gibbons added. Janssen, who went on the DL on March 30, was 4-1 last year with 34 saves and a 2.56 ERA. Toronto shortstop Jose Reyes, whos on the 15-day DL with a hamstring injury, did some light running Wednesday and took some swings in the batting cage. His lone game appearance came in a season-opening loss to Tampa Bay. "Hes making progress," Gibbons said. "This next road trip well get him out there running the bases a little bit. Hes moving along pretty good." Second baseman Maicer Izturis was slotted into the second spot in the batting order against the Astros. Izturis has yet to drive in a run this season but hes batting at a .421 clip. "Hes swinging it," Gibbons said. "Hes been one of our hottest hitters. So well get him up there and see what happens." Izturis batted in the No. 8 position Tuesday when the Blue Jays opened the three-game series with a 5-2 victory at Rogers Centre. In 107 games last season, Izturis had a .236 average with five homers and 32 RBIs. "He came into camp in better shape this year, really focused, and hes done a nice job," Gibbons said. "He made a couple nice plays last night at second base and thats good to see too." Walden did not make an appearance with the Blue Jays after being called up last Saturday. MIAMI - Chris Bosh was often referred to as the most important player for the Miami Heat over the last four seasons, something that probably not many people understood. It needs no explaining now. With LeBron James gone to Cleveland and Dwyane Wade — while arguably still the key to how far Miami goes — no longer the elite scorer he once was, the Heat are asking Bosh for more than ever. So far, hes delivering, with 77 points in Miamis first three games and flourishing again in the go-to-option role that he had for his seven seasons in Toronto.I feel like I am a much better player and a much better leader, said Bosh, announced Monday as the NBAs Eastern Conference player of the week. I try to really lead by example and lead by my voice every day.His voice, thats one thing. His productivity, thats another. And hes delivering on both fronts. He has scored at least 21 points in all three game, and the Heat were the only team in the Eastern Conference to go unbeaten in the opening week.He is playing at a very high level right now, Toronto coach Dwane Casey said.Wade isnt surprised. His pie chart is off the chain with how he can score the ball, where hes getting the ball, how were looking for him, Wade said. Hes going to be able to put up those numbers. Hes rebounding great. He looks good. Credit to him for getting himself ready.___Heres some of what to watch in the NBA this week:LEBRON VS. VINCEClevelands LeBron James moved into 25th on the NBAs career scoring list last week, overtaking Memphis Vince Carter (who could pass him back Monday night, but its almost certainly a matter of time before James pulls away). James has 23,223 points; Carter has 23,206. At his usual pace, James would be in the top 20 by seasons end. On the combined NBA-ABA list, James is 30th and Carter 31st.KOBE WATCHIts 49 and counting for Kobe Bryant. Hes 49 missed shots away from passing John Havlicek for the most unsuccessful field-goal attempts in NBA regular-season history. He missed 50 of his 85 shots in the Los Angeles Lakers first four games this season — all losses. Also notable: Since the NBA started tracking plus-minus in 2002, the Lakers have been outscored by more than 25 points with Bryant on the floor only eight times. Two of those were last week. The Lakers are home against Phoenix on Tuesday night and Charlotte on Sunday night.PLAYOFF REMATCHESWednesday night brings a pair of rematches from last seasons epic opening playoff round. Miami visits Charlotte, which means Josh McRoberts goes back to the city he called home until this summer and Lance Stephenson squares off against the Heat again. Afterward, the Los Angeles Clippers play at Golden State; those clubs met 11 times last season with the Clippers going 6-5, winning by an average score of 110-107. The Warriors Klay Thompson is the reigning Western Conference player of the week.BIG APPLE SERIESThe Knicks visit the Nets on Friday night, and maybe fans in New York will finally get treated to a game that isnt decided in the third quarter. The Knicks went 3-1 against their city rivals last season, winning by 30, 29 and 11 points. Brooklyns lone win also was an easy one, a 23-point rout.PHILLY WOESThe 76ers started 3-0 last season. Theyre 0-3 this season and have Houston, Toronto and Chicago on this weeks slate — along with Orlando, which is one of the three other teams still searching for their first win.STAT LINE OF THE WEEKDeMarcus Cousins, Sacramento: He had 34 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and three blocks in the Kings 98-92 victory at the Clippers on Sunday. Such a stat line occurred only once last season, when Dwight Howard had 35 points, 19 rebounds, five assists and three blocks for Houston against Detroit.___Follow Tim Reynolds on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/ByTimReynolds Harrison Phillips Jersey .com) - Tony Parker scored 17 points to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a comfortable 99-85 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. Celta playmaker Rafinha -- the on-loan Barccelona midfielder who has been one of the driving forces to the Galician clubs strong season -- sprayed a shot wide just before stoppage time.dddddddddddd Celta striker Mario Bermejo headed an opportunity from inside the box over outstretched goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz but over goal on the final play of the game. CHICAGO -- Working quickly all night long, Kyle Hendricks pitched like a veteran. Its easy to see why the Chicago Cubs feel so comfortable when the rookie right-hander is on the mound. Hendricks pitched 7 1-3 innings of six-hit ball in his third consecutive win, and Chicago cooled off Wily Peralta and the Milwaukee Brewers with a 3-0 victory on Tuesday. "He threw really well," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. "He repeated his outings in terms of execution, and the calmness he shows out there." Hendricks struck out five and walked one, continuing an impressive opening run for his major league career. The right-hander is 4-1 with a 1.01 ERA in five starts since he got a no-decision in his debut at Cincinnati on July 10. "Every time Im going out there I just feel confident that I can make pitches," said Hendricks, who was acquired in the July 2012 trade that sent Ryan Dempster to Texas. "It grows each start, and its going to keep growing hopefully." Anthony Rizzo hit his 26th homer for Chicago, which had lost three of four. Arismendy Alcantara had two hits and drove in a run after going 1 for 14 through the first four games of the Cubs seven-game homestand. Trying for a major league-high 15th win, Peralta allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings. The right-hander had won each of his last five starts and was 10-1 with a 4.06 ERA in his previous 12 games coming into the night. Peralta (14-7) has lost each of his three starts this season against last-place Chicago. He is 6-0 with a 1.10 ERA in seven games against the rest of the NL Central. "For some reason, they put together good at-bats against me," Peralta said. "As a group, theyre a young team and they have big league hitters. I think Im gonna get another chance to face them and I just want to get a win." The Cubs grabbed the lead on Justin Ruggianos RBI single in the second, and Alcantara added another run-scoring single in the fourth. Alcantaras hit drove in Starlin Castro, who reached on a leadoff double to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, the best such streak for the Cubs this year. Rizzo then led off the sixth with a towering drive to left for his first homer since July 22. "It was supposed to be down and away and I got it up," Peralta said. "When you work behind this guy, hes a pretty good hitter and hes gonna make you pay for it." Pedro Strop replaced Hendricks (4-1) with the bases loaded in the eighth and got Jonathan Lucroy to ground into an inning-ending double play. Hector Rondon then worked a perfect ninth for his 15th save in 19 chances. The Brewers had won four of five. They had their NL Central lead trimmed to 1 1/2 games over Pittsburgh, which won 4-2 at Detroit. Milwaukee centre fielder Carlos Gomez made a great leaping grab on the warning track in the first, taking extra bases away from Javier Baez. Gomez then was hit by a pitch on his right wrist in the third, but stayed in the game. TRAINERS ROOM Brewers: INFs Jean Segura and Scooter Gennett are playing with quad injuries. Manager Ron Roenicke said Segura is doing a lot better, but Gennett "is still a little bit limited." Cubs: LHP Felix Doubront (strained left calf) struck out seven while pitching four-plus innings in his first rehab appearance with Triple-A Iowa. He was charged with three runs and four hits. ... Castro said he tweaked his left knee, but should be fine. ... Ruggiano was removed after seven innings due to "leg fatigue," Renteria said. UP NEXT Brewers RHP Kyle Lohse (11-6, 3.33 ERA) and Cubs LHP Tsuyoshi Wada (1-1, 3.25 ERA) are slated to start the third game of the series Wednesday night. Lohse is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA in two starts against Chicago this season, including a three-hitter in a 9-0 victory on June 1. Wada is making his first appearance against Milwaukee and his sixth career start overall. In front of Tampa Bay and the rival New York Rangers. It was only fitting that the Islanders reached the summit with a thorough 3-0 victory over the Rangers on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden — arguably the biggest stage in the NHL and certainly the largest in New York.We havent accomplished a whole lot yet, captain John Tavares said. We expect to win against everyone we play against.I think anytime you beat the Rangers as an Islander, its a lot of fun. This was already setting up as a special year for the Islanders, who will be leaving Long Island and the Nassau Coliseum once the season is over and relocating to Brooklyn. Success on the ice has planted the seeds that perhaps nostalgia wont be the only reason why this season is remembered and celebrated. They won the Stanley Cup four times back in the 1980s. The Islanders know another championship would provide the perfect farewell to the Nassau Coliseum — the only home they have ever known. Our goal is always to win the Stanley Cup, Tavares said. The defending Eastern Conference champion Rangers were feted upon their return home from a three-game California sweep. Welcoming the Islanders only raised the hype, and the bright lights and attention didnt rattle them. The Islanders took the play to the Rangers, overwhelmed them in the second period, and finished the shutout in the third after driving goalie Henrik Lundqvist to the bench. It was a four-point game because they are catching up to us, said Jaroslav Halak, who stopped 27 shots and earned his fourth shutout. The guys did a great job. Playing in Madison Square Garden isnt easy, but we played our game. The Islanders (29-13-1) opened a seven-point lead over the Rangers, the fourth place team in the Metropolitan Division. The Islanders lead Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh by one point for the overall lead in the East.We havent wanted to get too high on our highs or too low on our lows, defenceman Traavis Hamonic said.dddddddddddd Weve done a good job this year rebounding from losses. Not only are they playing at the top of their game, having won three straight and five times during a seven-game road trip that ended Tuesday, the Islanders are getting good bounces. With the game scoreless in the first period, the Rangers struck the goal post three times within seconds — first with a drive by All-Star Rick Nash and another by Derick Brassard that hit the right post before sailing across the crease and hitting the left one.Luck was on my side, Halak said. It could have been a different game if they got the first one.Not only didnt they get the first one, they didnt get any past the goalie who is in his first season with the Islanders. It marked only the second time this season the Rangers were shut out, and it was the first time the Islanders did it at the Garden since Billy Smith posted another 3-0 win on Dec. 17, 1975.They had some chances, Tavares said. We were playing on the road against a pretty good team. We did a pretty good job getting pucks to the net. They did that 32 times in two periods against Lundqvist, scoring all three goals against him in the second. Lundqvist watched the third from the bench as Cam Talbot took over and stopped all 12 shots he faced.Rangers coach Alain Vigneault made the switch to try to change things for his team. Instead, the Islanders stuck to their game and finished off the big win.Theyre a tough team to play against. They play the right way, Nash said. They lock you in your own zone and they kind of drain all the momentum from your game. With 29 wins and 43 games under their belts, it is less surprising anytime the Islanders come out on top — regardless of the opponent. The schedule doesnt get any easier. When the Islanders return home Friday, the high-powered Pittsburgh Penguins will be there waiting. The Islanders are five wins shy of last seasons total with 39 games left. You go back to training camp and go over the things that are confidentially held in that room and what we wanted to accomplish, coach Jack Capuano said. Its about the character and comfort the guys have in one another, and up until this point how we have performed. We have a lot of hockey left. Calvin Johnsons epic game could have been even better, big numbers from Matthew Stafford, Drew Brees and Andy Dalton, while Tom Brady and Adrian Peterson struggle; Marvin Jones, Jordan Reed, Golden Tate and more in Scott Cullens 50 Points on NFL Week Eight. 1. Lions WR Calvin Johnson (14 REC, 329 YDS, 1 TD, 1 fumble, 16 targets) had a game for the ages against Dallas. True to form, he was tackled or knocked out of bounds four times inside the Dallas five-yard line. 2. Lions QB Matthew Stafford (33-for-48, 488 YDS, 1 TD, 2 INT) was the one getting the ball to Calvin Johnson. He ranks second in passing yardage this season (2,617) as well as second since the start of the 2011 season (12,622 YDS; 315.6 per game). 3. Saints QB Drew Brees (26-for-34, 332 YDS, 5 TD) is on a roll. Since the start of the 2011 season, Brees has thrown a league-high 108 touchdowns. Green Bays Aaron Rodgers, with 99, is only other quarterback within 25 touchdown passes of Brees over that two-and-a-half year span. 4. Bengals QB Andy Dalton (19-for-30, 325 YDS, 5 TD, 1 INT) has thrown for 300-plus yards in each of the last three games, passing for 11 touchdowns in the process. Hes tied for fourth with 16 touchdown passes and ranks fourth with 2.249 passing yards. Given those numbers, and ranks, its hard to say he doesnt belong as a fantasy starter. 5. Panthers QB Cam Newton (23-for-32, 221 YDS, 2 TD; 50 YDS, 1 TD, 11 carries) continues to roll up fantasy value. He ranks sixth among quarterbacks in fantasy value this season. Hes competed a career-high 64.9% of his passes and his touchdown-interception ratio (12:5) is the best of his three-year NFL career. 6. After questions arose late in the week about the status of Lions RB Reggie Bush (122 YDS, 1 TD, 1 fumble, 29 touches) he not only played, but had a season-high 29 touches and ranks third among running backs with 853 yards from scrimmage. 7. There was significant doubt, as late as Sunday morning, over whether Saints TE Jimmy Graham (3 REC, 37 YDS, 2 TD, 3 targets) would even play against Buffalo, as hes dealing with a foot injury, but even in a limited role, Graham turned in a productive performance. 8. Patriots QB Tom Brady (13-for-22, 116 YDS, 1 TD, 1 INT) is having a horrific season. Sundays 116-yard effort was his lowest passing yardage total since Decembe, 2009. His average of 228.0 yards per game -- in an increasingly pas-happy NFL -- is his lowest since 2006 and his touchdown to interception ratio (9:6) matches his first season as a starter, 2001, when he threw 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Every year in between has produced a better ratio, including last year when he threw 34 touchdowns and eight interceptions. 9. After Tom Brady locked in on him constantly in Week Seven, Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (2 REC, 27 YDS, 5 targets) was barely used in Week Eight. For those, like me, thinking that Gronkowskis return could salvage Bradys season, well, it may not be as simple as that. 10. Broncos QB Peyton Manning (30-for-44, 354 YDS, 4 TD, 3 INT, 1 lost fumble) put up yardage in the win over Washington, but his four turnovers showed just how the tide has turned. Manning didnt throw any interceptions in the first four games of the year, then one in each of the next three, before Washington picked him off three times in Week Eight. Time to take care of that pigskin. 11. Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (83 YDS, 1 TD, 16 touches) has obviously gone through a devastating time, following the death of his son, but has only 44 touches over the last three weeks, since his last three games of the 2011 season, which included an injury-shortened appearance in Week 10. 12. Washington TE Jordan Reed (8 REC, 90 YDS, 14 targets) has quickly gone from interesting option to must-start. In the last two weeks, Reed has 17 catches for 224 yards and a touchdown. 13. Second-year Bengals WR Marvin Jones (8 REC, 122 YDS, 4 TD, 8 targets) has been pulling ahead of Mohamed Sanu as the best option across from No. 1 wideout A.J. Green, but his four-touchdown effort against the Jets should pretty much seal that competition. Jones has 250 receiving yards and six touchdowns over the last three games. 14. Before we forget about Bengals WR A.J. Green (3 REC, 115 YDS, 7 targets), though, its worth nothing that his 734 receiving yards ranks second, behind only Calvin Johnson. 15. Packers WR Jordy Nelson (7 REC, 123 YDS, 2 TD, 8 targets) and Jarrett Boykin (5 REC, 89 YDS, 6 targets) had productive games against Minnesota. WR Myles White (5 REC, 35 YDS, 7 targets) could be one to watch, as the Packers No. 3 receiver, for as long as James Jones remains sidelined. 16. Seahawks WR Golden Tate (5 REC, 93 YDS, 2 TD, 7 targets) had the most productive game of his career, including a dozen rushing yards, against St. Louis and with WR Sidney Rice suffering a torn ACL, Tate is sure to be a big part of the Seahawks offence, even when Percy Harvin makes his return to the lineup. 17. Browns WR Josh Gordon (5 REC, 132 YDS, 1 TD, 10 targets) has been a big-time performer since missing the first two games of the year due to suspension. His average of 97.0 receiving yards per game currently ranks fourth among wide receivers. 18. Buccaneers WR Vincent Jackson (5 REC, 79 YDS, 13 targets) and TE/WR Tim Wright (5 REC, 48 YDS, 1 TD, 8 targets) had moderately productive games. The Bucs dont have a lot of options, and WR Mike Williams is now on IR, so Jackson and Wright figure to get a lot of looks for the rest of the season. 19. Falcons WR Harry Douglas (12 REC, 121 YDS, 18 targets) continues to build his resume as a starting receiver in the absence of Julio Jones and Roddy White. Drew Davis (5 REC, 77 YDS, 1 TD, 7 targets) had a productive game against Arizona too. 20. Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (120 YDS, 23 touches) pulled into the lead in yards from scrimmage, up to 1,018 yards in eight games, one yard ahead of Eagles RB LeSean McCoy. 21. Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno (133 YDS, 1 TD, 20 touches) is considered a giant surprise this year, since Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman were getting taken earlier in fantasy drafts, but his 744 yards from scrimmage through eight games is only slightly ahead of the 692 yards he puts up in eight games last season. The difference for Moreno is that he has a league-leading nine touchdowns this season. 22. Packers RB Eddie Lacy (112 YDS, 1 TD, 33 touches) isnt necessarily the most efficient, but hes getting a ton of touches -- 108 over the last four games -- and its increasing because hes taking more of a part, however small, in the Green Bay passing game, with nine catches over the last two games. 23. Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew (122 YDS, 25 touches) had his most productive game of the season. As bad as the Jaguars have been, its stunning that this was the first time Jones-Drew had 25 touches. Two years ago, when he led the league in rushing, Jones-Drew had at least 25 touches in eight games though, to be fair, six of those games came after Week Eight. 24. Eagles RB LeSean McCoy (65 YDS, 19 touches) is starting to feel the effects of Philadelphias inconsistent quarterback play. The last two weeks are the first two weeks of the season in which McCoy has been held under 90 yards from scrimmage and without a touchdown. 25. Raiders RB Darren McFadden (82 YDS, 2 TD, 26 touches) was reasonably effective. He ranks 17th among running backs in total fantasy points despite getting injured in Week Four, when he was limited to five carries, and missing Week Five. 26. 49ers RB Frank Gore (77 YDS, 2 TD, 20 touches) quietly went about his business against Jacksonville before backup Kendall Hunter (84 YDS, 9 carries) got turned loose on the downtrodden Jags. 27. Patriots RB Stevan Ridley (79 YDS, 1 TD, 14 carries) was inexplicably left out of the gameplan in the first quarter against Miami, recording no touches in the first 15 minutes, but it was the second-most productive game of the year for Ridley and the third straight game in which he scored a touchdown. 28. Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (162 YDS, 1 TD, 17 touches) has been sharing time with Rashard Mendenhall in the Arizona backfield but, with Mendenhall out against Atlanta, Ellington showed that probably is a sub-optimal way to distribute touches in the Cardinals offence. Theyre on a bye in Week Nine, but beyond that, Ellington really should see more carries. 29. Dolphins RB Lamar Miller (112 YDS, 21 touches) had his best game of the season, against New England, pulling further ahead of Daniel Thomas (52 YDS, 10 touches) in the Dolphins backfield. 30. With C.J. Spiller on the sidelines, Bills RB Fred Jackson (53 YDS, 1 TD, 17 touches) handled the bulk of the work against New Orleans, with Tashard Choice (35 YDS, 7 carries) coming off the bench. Jackson has been the Bills best back this year, but the Saints werent an easy matchup. 31. Saints RB Pierre Thomas (94 YDS, 17 touches) continues to produce for the Saints. Even though the season started with a three-pronged running attack, Thomas still ranks 25th among running backs with 477 yards from scrimmage, just ahead of Stevan Ridley, Darren McFadden and C.J. Spiller. 32. Rams RB Zak Stacy (134 YDS, 26 carries) suffered a sprained ankle late against Seattle Monday nigh, but it was a career-best performance, solidifying his place at the top of the Rams depth chart, when hes healthy. 33. Giants RB Peyton Hillis (85 YDS, 23 touches) continued to run the rock. While Hillis isnt all that efficient, and could be usurped by Andre Brown around Week 10, Hillis has gained 166 yards from scrimmage in two games with the Giants. 34. Buccaneers RB Mike James (64 YDS, 14 touches) didnt get a lot of opportunities against Carolina, but enough that hes likely to see more action over the rest of the season. 35. Jets RB Bilal Powell (30 YDS, 14 touches) barely re-established his lead in the Jets backfield ahead of Chris Ivory (11 YDS, 6 carries) as both Jets runners were bottled up against Cincinnati. 36. Saints WR Kenny Still (3 REC, 129 YDS, 2 TD, 4 targets) had the big day for New Orleans receivers against Buffalo, while Lance Moore (3 REC, 34 YDS, 1 TD, 4 targets) returned to the lineup with a score too. Marques Colston (3 REC, 18 YDS, 6 targets) is practically in free-fall -- he has a total of six catches for 44 yards in the last three games. 37. Panthers WR Ted Ginn (5 REC, 80 YDS, 6 targets) has largely been a disappointment in his career, but hes become a threat for Carolina. Week Eights 80 receiving yards was his most in a game since December, 2009. 38. Chiefs WR Dexter McCluster (8 REC, 67 YDS, 1 TD, 10 targets) has been under-used for much of the season, but does have 11 catches for 137 yards over the last two weeks as he takes on a bigger role. McClusters emergence stands in stark contrast with WR Dwayne Bowe (1 REC, 7 YDS, 2 targets), who has been nothing more than a spare part in the Chiefs offence this season. Bowe did have a season-high five catches for 66 yards in Week Seven before falling to season-lows in Week Eight. 39. While WR Jeremy Kerley has been the best bet among Jets receivers, David Nelson (8 REC, 80 YDS, 12 targets) has emerged as a more viable threat, catching a dozen passes for 160 yards over the past two games. 40. 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (10-for-16, 164 YDS, 1 TD; 54 YDS, 2 TD, 7 carries) is starting to play better after a dismal stretch from Week Two through Week Five. His passing totals are still modest but, combined with rushing yards and touchdowns, Kaepernick is returning to fantasy relevance. 41. Raiders QB Terrelle Pryor (10-for-19, 88 YDS, 2 INT; 106 YDS, 1 TD, 9 carries) got a win against Pittsburgh and his 106 rushing yards were his second-most in a game this season, but passing for 88 yards and two interceptions isnt a sustainable way to win games. The last two games, against Kansas City and Pittsburgh, Pryors completion percentage is way down (52.8% compared to 68.3% previously) 42. Browns QB Jason Campbell (22-for-36, 293 YDS, 2 TD) had a strong enough game against Kansas City that hes going to start again next week. So long as Campbell is passing like that, Brows receivers have fantasy value. 43. Eagles third-string QB Matt Barkley (17-for-26, 158 YDS, 1 INT, 1 lost fumble) struggled in relief of an injured Michael Vick. With Vick expected to miss more time with a hamstring injury, its important that Nick Foles is healthy enough to play because theres little evidence that Barkley is ready to face NFL defences. 44. Seahawks QB Russell Wilson (10-for-18, 139 YDS, 2 TD) could use some receiving stability because hes had three games this season with fewer than 150 passing yards. He had three such games all of last season. 45. Dolphins WR Brandon Gibson suffered a torn patella tendon and has been placed on IR. Not that the Dolphins passing game is outstanding, but have an eye on second-year WR Rishard Matthews, who will take over Gibsons slot receiver role. 46. Giants WR Rueben Randle (0 REC, 1 target) was somehow ignored in the Giants win over Philadelphia. When the two teams met in Week Five, Randle had six catches for 96 yards and two touchdowns, so the matchup should have been favourable. 47. The non-quarterback, non-running back worth most in fantasy leagues through eight weeks has been Saints TE Jimmy Graham (15.4 points per game), followed by Packers WR Jordy Nelson (15.0) and Lions WR Calvin Johnson (14.8). 48. Rams DE Robert Quinn (5 tackles, 3 sacks) and Chris Long (4 tackles, 3 sacks) took advantage of a depleted Seahawks offensive line Monday. They are one of the best end combinations in the game, combining for 15.5 sacks. 49. Seahawks OLB Bruce Irvin (9 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT) had a monster game against St. Louis. 50. Other defensive players to have big weeks: Cowboys ILB Sean Lee (10 tackles, 2 INT), Browns OLB Craig Robertson (11 tackles, 1 sack), Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson (12 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 PD), Saints OLB Junior Galette (6 tackles, 1 sack, 1 FR), Giants CB Terrell Thomas (11 tackles, 1 sack), Eagles OLB Mychal Kendricks (12 tackles, 1 TFL), Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson (4 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT), Steelers FS Ryan Clark (12 tackles, 1 TFL), Steelers SS Troy Polamalu (3 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT), Broncos CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (5 tackles, 1 INT, 2 PD), Cardinals ILB Daryl Washington (6 tackles, 1 INT, 2 PD), Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu (7 tackles, 1 INT, 1 PD), Vikings MLB Erin Henderson (14 tackles, 2 TFL), Buccaneers OLB Lavonte David (12 tackles, 1 sack, 1 TFL). FRISCO, Texas - Fabian Castillo, Je-Vaughn Watson and Michel scored in a 15-minute span of the second half Saturday night to keep FC Dallas unbeaten with a 3-1 victory over Chivas USA. Dallas (2-0-1) sits atop the Western Conference with an MLS-best seven points. Castillo opened the scoring in the 71st minute off a Mauro Diaz set piece, and Watson outran defender Tony Lochhead on a long ball and then juked goalkeeper Ian Kennedy for the eventual game-winner in the 78th minute. "We have a good team," Watson said. "The guys are running really hard. To get three goals so fast was like a reward because we had them on the back foot from the get-go of the game. I think the guys came out in the second half and decided we were going to go for the kill." Chivas forward Erick Torres grabbed his third goal of the season in the 81st minute to put the pressure back on the hosts, but Michel, a second-half substitute, slotted in a low, left-footed free kick in the 86th and Chivas (1-1-1) lost for the first time this season. Each team had 10 shots, but Dallas had nearly 60 per cent of the possession. "When you make those mistakes on set pieces and concentration, you dont deserve (points)," Chivas coach Wilmer Cabrera said. "You have to get punished in order for us to improve because weve been working — set pieces — weve been working on that, and today we lost concentration and then we got punished." Dallas midfielder Andrew Jacobson left the game in the 67th minute with what coach Oscar Pareja said was an "extreme" left ankle injury. Jacobson was on crutches after the game in the Dallas locker room. Jacobson, who came on in the 11th minute after Andrew Moffat tweaked a muscle in his left leg, hurt his ankle going for the ball and getting tangled with a Chivas player near midfield. Chivas Oswaldo Minda was replaced in first-half stoppage time with a right-leg injury that will be evaluated when the team gets home. Castillos strike came from a set piece that Diaz snapped into the box from 36 yards out. Veteran Honduran midfielder Hendry Thomas received the ball and headed it toward Castillo about 6 yards out, and Castillo swept it off Kennedys outstretched hand for the opener. Kennedy kept Chivas in the game in the first half when he saved a 30th-minute, point-blank header from Blas Perez, pushing the shot off the line to keep the game square. Both teams then started fouling more aggressively in the midfield and four yellow cards were shown in the final 15 minutes of the half, including three to Chivas players. The visitors picked up two more yellow cards in the second half, and Thomas earned an ejection during stoppage time. UNIONDALE, N.Y. - No one expected the New York Islanders to head into their All-Star break on top of the Eastern Conference — not even coach Jack Capuano. He knows his club has played surprisingly well, though he claims he doesnt know just how well.Thats OK. He likes what he sees, and he wants it to continue when the Islanders get back on the ice next week.I dont even know our record, Capuano said after New Yorks 7-4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday. We come to the rink and we get better every day. I know weve won some games and things are going well for our team right now, but we cant lose sight of how we need to play.Nikolay Kulemin had two goals and an assist, and the Islanders reclaimed first place in the East with their latest divisional win. New York is assured of being on top of the Metropolitan when play resumes next week. The Islanders, 15-2 against divisional foes, are off until they host the New York Rangers next Tuesday. New York is 16-4 overall at home. The thing about our hockey team is believablility and trust. Accountability and leadership, Capuano said. No one gave us a chance, and that is why you play the game. I am very pleased up until this point with our hockey club. Weve done a lot of good things, not only winning hockey games but how were winning games and how were playing within the structure and the framework.Michael Grabner, John Tavares, and Nick Leddy each had a goal and an assist.Grabner gave the Islanders the lead on their first shot, and Kulemin made it 3-0 with a short-handed tally on New Yorks first shot of the second period. Kulemin also scored in between, and Josh Bailey and Tavares found the net in the Islanders three-goal middle period.Leddy restored the Islanders three-goal lead 5:45 into the third.All-Star Jaroslav Halak made 25 saves for his 25th win this season. The Islanders (31-14-1), who have won five of six, lead Tampa Bay by one point in the East. New York bounced back from a lacklustre 6-4 loss at Montreal on Saturday with its second game in three outings of at least six goals. We wanted to have a bounce-back game and go into the break on a high, Bailey said. It will be a much-deserved break, but were going to want to pick up where we left off.Last seasons team went only 13-19-9 at home and missed the playoffs after making it the year before. Its no secret it was a big disappointment last year and one of the reasons why we didnt have much success, Tavares said.Defencemen Mark Streit and Michael Del Zotto had goals for Philadelphia in the second period, Claude Giroux made it 5-3 in the first minute of the third, and Chris VandeVelde brought the Flyers within 6-4 with 2:24 left.It wasnt enough to help Rob Zepp, who made his fifth straight start but was yanked in the second period in favour of Ray Emery after allowing four goals on 20 shots. Philadelphia (18-22-7) has lost four of six overall and seven of eight on the road. Our record doesnt show were a good team, Giroux said. We can be a good team, too, if we start playing the way we can play.Anders Lee added an empty-net goal for New York, which had 41 shots.Grabner got New York going after taking a pass in the neutral zone from Kulemin. Grabner streaked down left wing, got around diving defenceman Carlo Colaiacovo and snapped a shot under the crossbar to make it 1-0 just 1:32 in on his fourth goal.Grabner and Kulemin hooked up again — with defenceman Johnny Boychuk in the middle — to double the lead 6:32 later. The Flyers found their legs in the second half of the period and ended up with a 14-9 edge in shots in the frame. Their best scoring chance, however, came in the opening minute when a slick 3-on-2 produced a good shot by Wayne Simmonds that Halak corralled.Grabner nearly had another assist during Philadelphias first power play, but Casey Cizikas breakaway was stopped by the back of Zepps left leg with 4 minutes left in the opening period.Streit, a former Islanders captain, closed the Flyers to 3-1 with a power-play goal at 9:07 of the second, but Bailey made it 4-1 at 11:49. After Del Zotto cut the deficit back to two at 15:12, Tavares extended the lead to three with 7.6 seconds remaining in the second.I dont think as a team we played good defensive hockey, Flyers forward Jakub Voracek said. Its hard for us to get on a winning streak.NOTES: Islanders RW Kyle Okposo was chosen as the NHLs third star of the week. ... In his first game back since fracturing his right hand on Oct. 30, Westbrook went 12-of-17 from the field while amassing eight assists and seven rebounds and providing a much-needed spark to the injury-plagued Thunder, who won consecutive games for the first time this season. The Knicks, meanwhile, struggled mightily on offense with their star out of the lineup. As Carmelo Anthony sat out a second straight contest with back spasms, New York shot a meager 38.7 percent and missed 17-of-19 attempts from 3-point range to fall for the 12th time in 14 games. Amare Stoudemire was New Yorks lone bright spot, recording 20 points on 7- of-8 shooting and pulling down nine rebounds. Serge Ibaka added 14 points and Jeremy Lamb had 13 off the bench in the Thunders wire-to-wire win. Steven Adams posted 13 rebounds. Westbrook wasted little time making an impact, dropping in 12 points over the games first eight minutes as the Thunder sped out to a 23-6 lead. The All- Star point guard finished the opening quarter with 14 points and four assists while hitting 6-of-7 shots.dddddddddddd While Westbrook was red-hot, the Knicks were ice cold over the initial 12 minutes. New York made a woeful 4-of-22 tries from the floor while falling behind 30-13 at periods end. Those struggles continued into the early stages of the second quarter, which began with a 10-0 Oklahoma City run in which Lamb sunk a pair of threes. The Thunder led by as many as 28 during the frame before cruising into the break owning a commanding 59-33 advantage. The Knicks continued to miss shots during a third quarter in which they managed just 17 points to trail 82-50 heading into the fourth. Oklahoma City was ahead by as much as 37 in the final stanza, building a 98-61 lead with five minutes to play. Game Notes The Knicks are now 1-6 at Chesapeake Energy Arena since the Thunder relocated to Oklahoma City from Seattle ... J.R. Smith, starting in place of Anthony, mustered just two points while going 1-of-9 from the floor ... Tim Hardaway Jr. finished with 11 points off the bench for the Knicks ... Lamb went 3-for-4 from 3-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. With the series even at 2-2, Game 5 between the Toronto Raptors and New Jersey Nets at the Air Canada Centre on Wednesday should be quite the event. TSNs Jack Armstrong offers his thoughts on the series so far. 1. Improved Offence: Though the Raptors struggled mightily in the second and third quarters, they were impressive in the first and fourth and overall took much better care of the ball and exhibited better shot discipline. That must continue against an outstanding defensive opponent. Got the ball swung to the weakside and made the defence shift enough to get quality looks and just seemed less rattled and a little more sure of what they wanted to accomplish per trip. Still room for lots of improvement and theyll need it; will take the Nets best punch so far in this series on Wednesday. 2. Defensive Details: Much better job guarding the ball straight up and limiting straight-line drives and easy paths to the paint. Have to stay sound and stop closing out on perimeter guys out of control and going for pump fakes that lead to drives. Better job here. Really worked hard to contest shots. Help was very good in the fourth quarter and the rotations and communication were sound. 3. Red Alert: Game 5 and youre all even. Needless to say the pressure and excitement will be there for both sides. It comes down to this the next 48+ hours: which team stays focused better on the task at hand? Which team really locks in better on the game prep and the subtle adjustments you have to make per game? Do you stay true to your fundamental habits and execute them? At this point, youve played each other eight times already so theres no secrets. Whos going to be better and can sustain the edge? Lastly, with all the hype/hoopla surrounding you, are you able to maintain your poise/composure and get at the task at hand. Not easy for either side yet this is what makes the games so much fun. 4. Joe Johnson: Raptors did a nice job getting the ball out of his hands and making him work for his shots. No Landry Fields and in spite of John Salmons not scoring, his effort was outstanding in this matchup. He fronted him at times in the mid/low post and whomever was guarding Johnson stood their ground better and the help/double came quicker and harder. An absolute must in Game 5. Hell be looking to make a statement early and often to re-establish himself. 5. Raptors Square: What a scene! Believe me. NBA folks along with players and agents take notice of whats going on outside the ACC and compare it to the level of passion/interest they see in the other 29 NBA markets. Were in the recruitment and retention business; every little bit helps gain the upper hand on your opponent. The level of passion and love for the sport that people see from fans all across Canada right now will help Raptors ownership and management in so many ways continue to improve the organization on many fronts. You the fans are making your own statement. Keep it up. Thanks! TreQuan Smith Jersey . The 53-year-old Fieger, the PGA director of golf at Hideout Golf Club in Naples, Fla., finished at 13-under 275 at PGA Golf Club and earned $20,000 in the event postponed in October in Virginia because of rain and flooding. The top 35 earned spots in the Senior PGA Championship on May 22-25 at Harbor Shores in Michigan. "I dont play too many four-round tournaments, but this was a thrill," Fieger said. "I broke 70 all four rounds. In this wind, thats really an accomplishment. I felt at home all four days, and Ive played here a lot. You get the lead and you just try to get the ball in the fairway and on the green. Thats what I tried to do most of the day. Except for a little stumble in the middle, I hit some great chip shots. It was thrilling." He closed with a bogey on the Wanamaker Course. "Ive always said it would be nice to come up thhe 18th hole with a six- or seven-shot lead," Fieger said.dddddddddddd "Then when you have one, you still feel tentative. I hit it over the green at 18, not wanting to go into the water. I had a bad lie near a drain behind the green and ended up hitting a poor chip and made a bogey." Don Berry had a 70 to finish second. The 53-year-old Berry, the PGA head professional at Edinburgh USA in Brooklyn Park, Minn., birdied five of his last eight holes. "It looks like I won the B tournament," Berry said. "I played well this week and actually made some putts on the back nine today. I didnt really putt well all week until then. I cant wait to go back to the Senior PGA Championship. I made the cut last year and had four good rounds. Im looking forward to going back and giving it another shot." Jeff Coston of Blaine, Wash.; Steve Parker of Houston; and Frank Esposito Jr. of Monroe Township, N.J., tied for third at 5 under. Coston had a 69, and Parker and Esposito shot 73. TORONTO -- Dwight Anderson did a lot of watching at his first practice with the Toronto Argonauts. Anderson joined the Argos on Tuesday, a day after the CFL club acquired the veteran defensive back from the Saskatchewan Roughriders for a conditional 2015 draft pick. Anderson spent much of practice -- which was cut short by thunder and rain -- watching the Argos defence while talking with head coach Scott Milanovich, defensive co-ordinator Tim Burke and defensive backs coach Eddie Brown. Anderson celebrated his 33rd birthday Saturday, playing in the Riders 48-15 loss to Toronto at Rogers Centre. Anderson is in his eighth CFL season, having played previously for Hamilton, Calgary, Montreal and Saskatchewan. A two-time Grey Cup champion with Calgary (08) and Roughriders (13), Anderson has twice been a league all-star and four times a divisional all-star. Markus Wheaton Jersey . One night after he set the Braves franchise record for career saves, Craig Kimbrel blew his third of the season in 19 opportunities. The Diamondbacks were 0 for 12 with runners in scoring position before Aaron Hills pinch-hit double off Kimbrel down the right field line scored Ender Inciarte from second to tie it at 2-2. Jason Heyward homered with two outs in the 10th off Addison Reed to put the Braves up 3-2, but Miguel Montero tied it again with an opposite-field, one-out shot off Anthony Varvaro in Arizonas half of the inning. Ross singled with one out off David Carpenter (4-1), then Didi Gregorius walked to bring up Parra, whose soft fly ball fell in front of centre fielder B.J. Upton. Randall Delgado (1-1) struck out the side after a leadoff walk in the 11th to get the victory. It was just the 18th blown save in 173 career opportunities for Kimbrel, still the third-highest percentage in baseball history for pitchers with at least 150 save tries. Kimbrel, who earned a four-out save in Atlantas 5-2 victory Friday night, got Chris Owings to fly out to start the ninth. But Inciarte walked and stole second. Hill sliced one just inside the right field foul line to bring Inciarte home. Heywards two-out shot to left field off Addison Reed was his second home run in as many nights and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Moontero was 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position before he hit Varvaros 2-1 pitch just over the wall in left.dddddddddddd Inciarte was called safe on a bunt to start the 11th, but Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez challenged and the call was reversed. It didnt matter as Arizona went on to score the winner. Starters Ervin Santana of Atlanta and Wade Miley of Arizona had strong outings. Santana gave up only an unearned run in seven innings, scattering six hits. Miley allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits in seven innings, fanning six with no walks. The Braves took a 2-1 lead when, with two outs in the sixth, Justin Upton singled to right, then scored from first on Evan Gattis second double of the night. Atlanta second baseman Dan Uggla committed two errors, one leading to a run. Martin Prado led off the second with a single, took second on David Peraltas base hit, then scored when Uggla threw the ball away trying to convert a double play on a fielders choice ground out by Inciarte. Atlanta tied it in the third when Andrelton Simmons doubled, took third on the right fielder Parras errant throw, then scored on Heywards grounder, sliding in barely below the catcher Monteros tag after a high throw from the third baseman Prado. NOTES: Peralta has a hit in each of his first six big league games. ... In Sundays series finale, Arizonas Chase Anderson (4-0, 3.32 ERA), winner of his first four major league starts, tries to make it five, while the Braves counter with Aaron Harang (4-4, 3.24). ... ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Denver Broncos took another step in the renovation of their secondary Tuesday by agreeing to a four-year deal with Pro Bowl safety T.J. Ward. Ward will play in a backfield that will be without Champ Bailey, who was released last week, and could move on without Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who entered free agency without a new deal from the Broncos. Ward had 129 tackles and two interceptions for Cleveland last year. The Broncos are looking for some stability at a position that got juggled last year, with the loss of Rahim Moore and the inconsistent play of Duke Ihenacho. Veteran Mike Adams, also formerly of Cleveland, started the season as a reserve but ended up in the starting lineup. "Hes a young, explosive strong safety who is going to bring a lot of energy and toughness to our secondary," Broncos boss John Elway said of Ward. But the Broncos arent expected to make the sort of free-agent plays that marked their last two seasons, when they signed Wes Welker and Peyton Manning. Denvers big receiving news Tuesday was a two-year extension for fourth receiver Andre Caldwell, who could move up a notch if the Broncos part ways with Eric Decker. Caldwell came on late in the season when Welker was sidelined with a concussion. The 28-year-old Caldwell had 11 of his 16 receptions over the final three games of the season. His most productive game in 2013 was against San Diego on Dec. 12, when he had six receptions for 59 yards and two TDs. Caldwell was held without a catch in the 43-8 loss to Seattle in the Super Bowl. "Hopefully I can compete for an extended role this year and contribute a lot more to the team," Caldwell said. Caldwell received an invitation from Manning to attend off-season workouts at Duke University. Last spring, only Welker, Demaryius Thomas and Decker were invited to work on their chemistry with the five-time NFL MVP quarterback. "Its just a process of building confidence with those guys all the way from April," Caldwell said. Ward is expected to be a main piece around which the Broncos reshape a defence that was obliterated by an injury epidemic last season, losing Von Miller, Chris Harris Jr., Derek Wolfe, Kevin Vickerson and Moore. The Broncos also could seek a replacement for linebacker Wesley Woodyard, a free agent who is exploring other options. Theyll need a new starting guard now that Zane Beadles has agreed to terms with Jacksonville. Running back Knowshon Moreno is a free agent as well after rushing for 1,038 yards and 10 TDs in 2013. The Broncos also hired two new coaches on Tuesday, bringing in assistant offensive line coach James Cregg and offensive quality control coach Bo Hardegree. He was with the New York Jets in 2011 when the NFL locked out their players after they failed to agree on a new contract. Willy went undrafted but was given a look by four NFL teams before heading north. The fly-by. Five guys skating by the bench for high fives after a goal. Ubiquitous in NHL arenas. When did it begin? I wanted to find out, so I called Darcy Tucker. Wed heard that Vancouver Giants head coach Don Hay has said he thinks the three-time Memorial Cup champion Kamloops Blazers – his former team – may have started the trend in the early 90s. Tucker remembers doing the fly-by, but not starting it. Ryan Huska, a former Blazer teammate and current Kelowna Rockets head coach, said the same. Drew Bannister played for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the 92 Memorial Cup final against Kamloops. He says the Hounds were already doing the fly-by themselves, as were other OHL teams. Square one. I turned to my colleagues. Ray Ferraro figured it was a thing by 2000, but not a thing he warmly embraced. "I hated it," he wrote in an email. I watched old tapes. The fly-by was definitely happening by 2000. I found examples as early as the 95/96 season, like this one: Saku Koivu in his rookie year. Young players were more likely to do it than old, which is consistent with the widely held belief that junior hockey players were doing the fly-by before NHLers. It trickled up. "It was totally a junior thing. I think it started close to my first year – 95," said Jeff ONeill, who shares Ferraros distaste for the fly-by. "I hate it." But he did give me my first solid lead. "I may be wrong, but I think the Peterborough Petes may have started it." I called Jeff Twohey. Twohey is the GM of the Oshawa Generals, but was with the Petes for 30 years. He started as a scout in 1980, and was general manager for 17 seasons. "I think we were the first team to ever do it," says Twohey. "My gut was that we started it. We had such a tight-knit group back in the early 80s." Definitely smoke. But fire? I asked around. "It was not done when I was in junior from 81-84," wrote Dave Reid in an email. "Late 80s is probably close." Andrew MacVicar played from 86-89 with the Petes. He remembers doing the fly-by, but only on big goals or in the playoffs. "It was supposed to be something really special," says MacVicar. MacVicars specific memory that teammate Billy Huard began doing the fly-by more often and earlier in games as a way to get under the skin of Petes opponents was a dead end, too. Huard has no recollection of doing it at all, let alone having a hand in its evolution. MacVicar thought Jamie Hicks (86-90) would remember. He doesnt. He also thought Mark Freer (85-88) might remember. Freer does, vaguely, but he named Kris King as the possible creator of the fly-by, and King has no memory of it. King then suggested that Twohey might have something to say on the matter. This is about the time I got dizzy. I called Corey Foster, who played in Peterborough from 86-89. He says the Petes were definitely doing the fly-by in his final year with the team, when they went to the Memorial Cup. I went back to the tape library. No Petes games. But we do have the final, and I found a fly-by. Scott Scissons, playing for the Saskatoon Blades. Its a beta version of the fly-by – instead of flying past the bench, the players sort of turn around and just stand there – but it counts. Thats the earliest video evidence we have. It seemed unlikely that the Scissons goal was the fly-bys big bang. I was getting nowhere, so we put the question to twitter. Curious theories poured in. One suggestion had it that the fly-by grew out of Brian Propps unique and unusual guffaw goal celebration. Propp says no. Others blamed Hollywood. I knew the Top Gun hypothesis was a joke, but I watched all of D2: Mighty Ducks and Slap Shot before I realized those were probably tongue-in-cheek suggestions, and references to the Flying V and Steve Hanson.dddddddddddd "Bring the kids. We got entertainment for the whole family." Plenty of people figure the fly-by started at the World Juniors, but we cant find any examples of it before 1991. In Red Deer in 1995, Team Canada was doing the fly-by in its current form: all five players skating by the bench. Before that, the video evidence is less compelling. There are solid signs of it at the 94 and 93 tournaments. In 92 and 91, we know that the goal-scorer on at least a few occasions did the fly-by, though in most cases we cant tell if his teammates joined in, and in some cases we know they did not. (As in this goal by Paul Kariya, for example). Did it start with the Montreal Canadiens? For a brief time, the Habs bench would empty for every goal: everyone celebrating on the ice together. When a rule was implemented to end that practice, the theory goes, the team began the fly-by. Mark Napier, a Canadien from 1978-84, said no. Did it start with the Edmonton Oilers in the mid-80s? Napier (84-86 with the Oilers) said no again. As did Paul Coffey, adamantly. "Why do (the fly-by)? Whats the point? Just celebrate with the guys on the ice, and go line up." That sounds suspiciously like Jester talking to Maverick: "Get your butts above the hard deck and return to base immediately." Maybe I should revisit the Top Gun theory. At this point, I got a tip that the fly-by started in Moose Jaw in the mid-to-late 80s. Lorne Molleken – an assistant coach in his first season with Moose Jaw in 89 – remembers it. He thinks. "What sticks out in my mind is moreso the players high-fiving the fans," said Molleken. The Moose Jaw Civic Centre – or the Crushed Can – had unusually low glass beside the benches, says Molleken, and at some point players got the fans involved in goal celebrations. "We came out of our end and there were piles of kids hanging over the glass," recalled Scott Reid, who played in Moose Jaw from 88-90. "No one else was doing it at the time that I can remember." "Wed do our whole bench and fans from the bench to the hash mark," said Jerome Bechard, a Warrior from 85-90. "We probably skated 20 or 25 feet." But not everyone shares that memory. "I dont remember that," said Theo Fleury, who played four seasons in Moose Jaw. "You just didnt do that," said Fleury, laughing. "If you wanted to start a brawl, you did it." Fleurys last season with the Warriors was 87/88, which means the earliest the fly-by was a thing in Moose Jaw is the following season, 88/89: the same time it was probably happening in Peterborough, and the same time it definitely sort-of happened by seasons end in the Memorial Cup final. Clear as mud. Which brings us to the oddest and most intriguing theory of all: the fly-by was born on a French Canadian television drama about a fictional Quebec City hockey team. Lance et Compte (which roughly translates as He shoots, he scores) aired from 1986 to 1989 in its first incarnation, and, sure enough, theres the fly-by in Season 1, Episode 5, albeit with just the one skater and not the full team. "I remember that the director at the time wanted that shot because it was easy to shoot," says Rejean Tremblay, who wrote on the show. "One camera, five guys skating in front of the beach, you could make it in less than ten minutes." Is it possible that the origin of the fly-by was the brainchild of a cost-conscious French Canadian director? It seems unlikely, but really, its about as likely as anything else.
