CSR Film Room: Christian McCaffrey’s improvement goes beyond his rushing production There was a decent dose of expectation for Christian McCaffrey heading into his sophomore year in the NFL. It didn’t take much to realize that the former Stanford star bulked up in the off-season. Would the change in his body lead to production? The early results suggest yes. Before last week’s games Christian Miller Baltimore Ravens Jersey , he was 4th in the league in yards after contact.Don’t believe the stats? Well here are some examples:The one area of improvement that’s gone under noticed is his pass blocking. McCaffrey struggled in this area last season. The objectives for a back in pass protection are to identify the blitzer and have sound technique to prevent a muddled pocket.McCaffrey’s job is straight forward on this blitz. Cam Newton is taking a short three step drop on a timing route. McCaffrey quickly identifies the blitzing linebacker and forces him back inside. The Bengals bring a similar blitz later in the game. The defensive line slants to the left, which gives McCaffrey a straight forward ID on the linebacker. He assists Tyler Larsen to give Newton a clean pocket. There’s a lot going on in this play-action pass. Ryan Kalil gets run over. Greg Van Roten pulls, but he’s late to pick up the edge rusher. McCaffrey lands a solid chip on the edge to help Van Roten. This gives Newton just enough time before attempting his pass. This isn’t a pretty rep, but he does his job to slow down both blitzing linebackers. His overall strength has improved, but McCaffrey can still improve his technique to become a better blocker. He’s improved upon the mental side by correctly picking up blitz concepts to keep Newton’s pocket clean. Here is an example of his strength and technique working together. He matches with the stunting rusher Greg Olsen Jersey 2019 , establishes a wide base, and makes perfect contact. McCaffrey doesn’t get ran over, which is a sign that he showed correct technique. It’s too soon to tell if McCaffrey will be one of the better pass blocking backs in the league, but considering where he was last year he has undoubtedly shown positive growth. The enhancements as an every down runner, his continued success as a pass catcher Blue Greg Olsen Jersey , and now his advancements as a pass blocker are beginning to show why the Panthers invested a top 10 pick in CMC. Norris spent the 2018 season on injured reserve with a toe injury."The Carolina Panthers have signed linebacker Jared Norris to a two-year contract, according to a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport.According to the team’s official bio of Norris, he spent the majority of the 2018 season on injured reserve after suffering a toe injury early in the year. In 2017, he played 11 games—mostly on special teams—with the Panthers before landing on injured reserve with a calf injury. He was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2016 by Carolina and has mostly been used on special teams during his tenure in Carolina. While the full terms of the contract are unknown at this time, it’s unlikely there’s a lot of money involved in this transaction. Considering the signing bonus is only $150k according to Rapoport’s tweet Kawann Short Jersey 2019 , the contract is probably in the vicinity of $1 million per year, which isn’t a ton of cap space to use on a solid special teams player. We’ll update this story when the details of the contract have been released.
Falcons guard/center/defensive tackle/renaissance man Ben Garland is a perennial fan favorite. Staring down his 31st birthday in April and headed for free agency Mohamed Sanu Jersey 2019 , we might’ve seen Ben play his last snap as a Falcon. That doesn’t detract from his legacy one bit, especially when he’s still out in the community doing good work with a Falcons jersey on his back. Garland recently gift Super Bowl tickets to Kami Kennedy, the widow of Captain Thomas Kennedy. Captain Kennedy died serving in Afghanistan in 2012. Kami is battling cancer but has done extensive work for the military community. Here’s a little more info about Kami contained in the press release: So Garland found out about Kami and showed up at her door with Super Bowl tickets. Here’s the video. A warning: if you don’t have a tissue box nearby, go find one, because you’re going to need it. If you’ve been following this team since 2015, then you’re intimately familiar with Garland’s good works. He went to the Air Force academy and is a captain in the Colorado Air National Guard. I’ll be ecstatic if the Falcons can find a role for him going forward. If not Black Mohamed Sanu Jersey , he’ll be a Falcons alum we check in on frequently. Discuss!Falcons place Ricardo Allen on IR, sign LB Bruce Carter & S Sharrod Neasman The Falcons have officially placed starting FS Ricardo Allen on IR, ending his 2018 season. The team also made several other roster moves on Tuesday afternoon, including:Signed LB Bruce CarterSigned S Sharrod NeasmanWaived LB Richard JarvisRicardo Allen tore his achilles during the Falcons’ Week 3 match-up with the Saints. Allen signed a 3-year, $19.5M contract with the Falcons during training camp, and all of Atlanta hopes that he is able to return healthy for the start of the 2019 season. Achilles injuries are typically quite difficult to return from Stitched Kemal Ishmael Jersey , however, so it’s possible that Allen may need additional time to return to full strength. The Falcons also signed LB Bruce Carter and S Sharrod Neasman to bolster the depth at both positions. Carter is a 7-year veteran who most recently played with Jets in 2017—he’s piled up 311 tackles, 5 sacks, 17 pass deflections, and 5 INTs during his career. Neasman was with the Falcons in 2017 as the primary back-up strong safety behind Keanu Neal. He played in 11 games for Atlanta last season, with only 2 total tackles. Neasman is familiar with the scheme and looked solid in limited playing time—hopefully Youth Kemal Ishmael Jersey , he can provide steady depth and will compete with Jordan Richards, Keith Tandy, and Kemal Ishmael for the starting role.Richard Jarvis has bounced between the active roster and the practice squad several times this season. The Falcons clearly like Jarvis as a developmental EDGE/LB, and I’d expect him to return to the practice squad if he clears waivers. What are your thoughts on these roster moves? Do you think the Falcons will get anything out of Bruce Carter and/or Sharrod Neasman? Who do you think should start among the Falcons current options at SS?

Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota‘s injured elbow has improved http://www.thetitanslockerroom.com/authentic-nate-palmer-jersey , coach Mike Vrabel said Tuesday night.“[Mariota’s] probably better than he was Friday or Saturday,鈥?Vrabel said on Nashville’s 104.5 FM, via Erik Bacharach of The Tennessean. Mariota suited up Sunday against the Texans but did not see the field as backup Blaine Gabbert played. The Titans also won without their top three tackles, all of whom are doing better this week.Vrabel expects left tackle Taylor Lewan to return to practice Wednesday. Lewan was diagnosed with a concussion during the season opener following a hit by Dolphins defensive lineman Andre Branch during an interception return.Starting right tackle Jack Conklin has yet to play as he rehabs from a torn ACL, but Vrabel said Conklin could be available “in some capacity” on Sunday against the Jaguars.Backup tackle Dennis Kelly, who was treated for a virus last week, is out of the hospital. Rams receiver Cooper Kupp suffered a potentially serious knee injury on Sunday — a blow to a team that has stayed remarkably healthy on the way to a 9-1 start.Kupp went down in the fourth quarter of Los Angeles‘ win over Seattle clutching his left knee, which sidelined him for two games earlier this season when he was hurt on a horse-collar tackle at Denver.Coach Sean McVay said Kupp would have an MRI on Monday.“I don’t think it’s good,” McVay said. “It’s his knee. We’ll get the MRI Quinton Spain Jersey White , but it doesn’t look good right now.”Kupp led the Rams last season with 869 yards receiving as a rookie.“It doesn’t look great. He’s been a valuable piece of our team, and a guy we’ll miss,” quarterback Jared Goff said. “Like a lot of us, he’s been through a lot this week. He’s a tough guy (with) a tough family, and I know he’ll come out stronger through it all.”In other injury news, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady also lost one of his favorite targets when Julian Edelman left New England’s 34-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans with an ankle injury. Edelman was suspended for the first four games of the season, when Brady and the Patriots’ offense struggled. It was a rough day for the New England offense that also ended with Brady on the bench — because the game was out of reach.Left tackle Trent Brown was hurt twice during the game, leaving for good when he injured his back in the third quarter. Tight end Dwayne Allen also hurt a knee in the third quarter. For the Titans, running back David Fluellen went down untouched with a knee injury.New England’s opponent in last season’s AFC championship game also got banged up on offense. Jaguars center Brandon Linder and tackle Ereck Flowers left Jacksonville’s loss to Indianapolis with knee injuries. The Colts lost defensive end Carroll Phillips to an injured groin and defensive tackle Grover Stewart to an ankle injury. The Packers‘ defense lost two starters in Green Bay’s win over Miami when safety Kentrell Brice hurt an ankle and linebacker Nick Perry limped off with a knee injury. They had been on the injury report last week for different reasons.Cornerback Bashaud Breeland also left in the fourth quarter for the Packers with a groin injury after he made a key interception earlier in the second half. Green Bay offensive lineman Lucas Patrick took a hard hit while returning a short kickoff and was in the concussion protocol. For the Dolphins Womens Marcus Mariota Jersey , running back Kenyan Drake left with a knee injury, and two wide receivers were hurt: Davante Parker (shoulder) and Jakeem Grant (leg). The Bills, with Matt Barkley filling in at quarterback for the injured Josh Allen and Derek Anderson, had two defensive players hurt in their win over the Jets. Cornerback Taron Johnson hurt a shoulder and Matt Milano, who had an interception earlier in the game, left in the fourth quarter to be evaluated for a head injury.Cincinnati’s historically bad defense suffered another setback when cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick exited the Bengals‘ blowout loss to the Saints with a concussion. For the Detroit Lions, tight end Michael Roberts suffered a shoulder injury and wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. hurt a knee.Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman left with a knee injury on the opening drive against the Raiders. Later in the game, Oakland lost wide receiver Martavis Bryant to a knee injury that coach Jon Gruden said he fears is serious.
1. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (16-3)LAST SEASON: Won their first Super Bowl title Womens Demar Dotson Jersey , defeating Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and New England Patriots to capture franchise's first NFL championship since 1960. And they did it without slew of injured starters, including captains on offense, defense and special teams. Backup QB Nick Foles led way after Carson Wentz tore ACL in Week 14. Offense was balanced and potent throughout season, and coach Doug Pederson stayed aggressive in critical moments in biggest games. Jay Ajayi, LeGarrette Blount and Corey Clement led ground attack. TE Zach Ertz and WRs Alshon Jeffery and Nelson Agholor were go-to receivers. Defense thrived under coordinator Jim Schwartz. DT Fletcher Cox was monster in middle of deep line that included Brandon Graham, who secured 41-33 win over Patriots with strip-sack on Brady. Special teams also excelled with rookie K Jake Elliott showing strong leg.THEY NEED: LB, RB, TE, WR.THEY DON'T NEED: QB, CB, DL.POSSIBLE FIRST PICK: WR D.J. They don't have glaring need to fill so can draft best player available with 32nd pick. Trading down to add picks also possible because they only have six spots, none in second or third rounds. 32nd pick hasn't been big hit in NFL history. Only one player picked 32nd — OT Bob St. Clair in 1953 — is in Hall of Fame, though QB Drew Brees will join him one day and G Logan Mankins also could. Vikings drafted QB Teddy Bridgewater at 32 in 2014. My last attempt to crack the code, could be the craziest yet"Will the Tampa Bay Buccaneers pick Devin White with the fifth overall pick or will they trade back and stockpile picks in a talent-heavy class? This is what mock drafts are all about, and I’m so excited to do my one and only *trades allowed version that we’re going to cut the small talk, here.*Trades are done by pick value charts only. Yes, I’m aware inflation happens, but I’m not going that far down the rabbit hole. This would never get done if I did.1ST PICK - ARIZONA CARDINALS - QB, KYLER MURRAY (OKLAHOMA)Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY SportsThis has been the pick for as long as I can remember. For so long I find myself wondering who the Cardinals will draft next to help their young rookie quarterback. Before we answer that, we have to answer the next question. What happens with pick two?2ND PICK - SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS - DT, QUINNEN WILLIAMS (ALABAMA)Recent rumors have surfaced the 49ers may select Quinnen Williams over Bosa. It’s just crazy enough to happen. Williams is widely considered the best player in this draft, and is perhaps the most ‘can’t-missiest’ of the ‘can’t misses’.3RD PICK - NEW YORK JETS - DT, ED OLIVER (HOUSTON)More rumors are swirling around this pick and the word is the Jets are trying to get out of the third pick. Could the presence of Nick Bosa still on the board be enough to get a team to jump up? Not yet. But, another rumor involving the Jets is how much they love Ed Oliver and while I believe the trade back desire is tied to the Oliver desire, with no trade-up partners willing to pay for the third-pick, the Jets shock the world.4TH PICK - OAKLAND RAIDERS - EDGE, NICK BOSA (OHIO STATE)It seems every year there’s a player who falls down the board a bit, much to the surprise of everyone.Nick Bosa could be this year’s guy. Or Kyler Murray if the Cardinals don’t take him AND they stay at number one.Falling to fourth isn’t exactly documentary worthy as far as tumbles go, but seeing this Bosa brother available when they get on the clock is certainly not something Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock are expecting at this point. Both Bosa’s in the AFC West? At least mom and dad don’t have to worry about dueling Super Bowl games anytime soon.5TH PICK - DETROIT LIONS - EDGE, JOSH ALLEN (KENTUCKY) - TRADE WITH TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERSBrian Spurlock-USA TODAY SportsIf the Lions are going to compete in the NFC North they need to get on board with the solid defenses being fielded in Chicago and Minnesota.unless they see the Lions in the playoffs.6TH PICK - NEW YORK GIANTS - QB, DANIEL JONES (DUKE)Please let this happen.7TH PICK - CINCINNATI BENGALS - QB, DWAYNE HASKINS (OHIO STATE)Every Buccaneers fan in support of drafting Devin White is going to hold their collective breath as the Bengals move up.In reality though, Cincinnati is in such shock the Giants actually took Jones over Haskins, they just couldn’t afford to wait any longer.Trading up costs the Bengals the 11th pick (2019 1st) and the 72nd pick (2019 3rd), but they get their new head coach his new franchise quarterback in the process.Somewhere, Andy Dalton to Washington trade talks are beginning.8TH PICK - TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS - LB, DEVIN WHITE (LSU) - TRADE WITH DETROIT LIONSBrian Spurlock-USA TODAY SportsAfter James Yarcho stops yelling at me about how the Bucs should have taken White at five instead of trading back and risking a team like the Bengals trading ahead of them to get White themselves, he’ll calm down from the Haskins pick just enough to see Jason Licht get the quarterback for Todd Bowles’ defense.9TH PICK - BUFFALO BILLS - EDGE, RASHAN GARY (MICHIGAN)The Buffalo Bills have already shown they aren’t going to let a little thing like lack of collegiate production get in the way of drafting their first-round target.10TH PICK - DENVER BRONCOS - TE, T.J. HOCKENSON (IOWA)If John Elway doesn’t Elway this thing up and draft a quarterback, he needs to get a tight end for Joe Flacco.11TH PICK - JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS - OT, JAWAAN TAYLOR(FLORIDA) - TRADE WITH CINCINNATI BENGALSeven more when the playing starts.15TH PICK - WASHINGTON REDSKINS - WR, D.K. METCALF (OLE MISS) After missing out on all three quarterbacks with first-round potential, the Redskins will have to get Case Keenum - or Andy Dalton - a target to help keep him alive in 2019.An added bonus to this pick would be the revival of Josh Doctson’s career due to Metcalf’s presence Warren Sapp Jersey , and the beginnings of some good weapons to help whichever quarterback Washington drafts in 2020.16TH PICK - CAROLINA PANTHERS - OT, ANDRE DILLARD (WASHINGTON STATE)Carolina is dealing with an ailing quarterback due in large part to the damage he’s taken over the years. The Panthers already started game planning around Cam Newton not running as much as he has, and drafting a solid pass protector here will help as well.17TH PICK - NEW YORK GIANTS - EDGE, BRIAN BURNS (FLORIDA STATE)Melina Myers-USA TODAY SportsThe Giants got a passer for the future, and here they get a pass rusher for now.18TH PICK - MINNESOTA VIKINGS - TE, NOAH FANT (IOWA) Tight end Kyle Rudolph is near the end of his current contract, and honestly he’s capped out as an NFL tight end.Noah Fant’s ceiling is much higher, and having both on the field at times will help Kirk Cousins get things going in the right direction for 2019.19TH PICK - TENNESSEE TITANS - DT, CHRISTIAN WILKINS (CLEMSON)Adding Christian Wilkins to the defensive line gives the Titans a formidable duo up front to help get into the faces of guys like Andrew Luck and Deshaun Watson. 20TH PICK - PITTSBURGH STEELERS - CB, ROCK YA-SIN (TEMPLE)As I mentioned when I interviewed him earlier this off-season, I’m a big fan of Rock Ya-Sin. But you don’t have to take my word for it, I’ll let Peter King do the heavy lifting,21ST PICK - PHILADELPHIA EAGLES - RB, JOSH JACOBS (ALABAMA) - TRADE WITH SEATTLE SEAHAWKSFor the second time the Seahawks are involved in a day one trade. This one has them moving back from the 21st pick to the 25th and gaining both of Philadelphia’s fourth-round picks in this years draft. With the pick, the Eagles grab running back Josh Jacobs. Simply put, the Eagles need to ensure they have a solid running game to support quarterback Carson Wentz who is already dangerously close to getting the ‘injury prone’ tag. With Baltimore, Houston and Oakland all being potential teams interested in Jacobs this is the time for Philly to move up. They can focus on other pieces in the second-round with their two picks there.22ND PICK - BALTIMORE RAVENS - WR, A.J. BROWN (OLE MISS)Baltimore should be taking multiple receivers in this year’s draft. They need a guy who can run strong and make contested catches, and a guy who can take the lid off of defenses. There are more of the second variety than there are the first, so here, the Ravens get their strong receiver who can run quick routes and make tough catches. At one point Brown was the top receiver in the group for 2019.Getting him here towards the end of the first-round is a win, and is a big need for Baltimore.23RD PICK - HOUSTON TEXANS - OL, JONAH WILLIAMS (ALABAMA)I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to have Williams going this late but here we are. If Deshaun Watson could play without having to run for his life he’d probably do really well. If Williams is what he says he is, then Watson will have a better chance of doing so in 2019.24TH PICK - OAKLAND RAIDERS - CB, BYRON MURPHY (WASHINGTON)I don’t honestly know if the Raiders like any of the cornerbacks currently on their roster, so it makes sense for them to draft one they like. sure there will be other parts of this trade, but we’ll let the other guys figure that stuff out.29TH PICK - SEATTLE SEAHAWKS - DT, DEXTER LAWRENCE (CLEMSON)If Seattle wants to give Russell Wilson a ‘Legion of Boom’ v2.0, they could start much worse drafting players other than Clemson teammates Clelin Ferrell and Dexter Lawrence.30TH PICK - GREEN BAY PACKERS - TE, IRV SMITH (ALABAMA)It’s not the first time we’ve seen three tight ends on day one, and it won’t be the last with the way the league is moving. After selecting the quarterback of their defense earlier, the Packers would be wise to get their actual quarterback a new weapon on offense.Irv Smith will be the day one starter and Jimmy Graham will, well, do something.31ST PICK - HOUSTON TEXANS - OT, CODY FORD (OKLAHOMA) - TRADE WITH LOS ANGELES RAMSIn a stacked draft class, it makes sense for a Super Bowl contender to move back and use four day two picks to find contributors for the 2019 push. For Houston, looking to keep pace with the likes of Indianapolis, protecting the quarterback is enough to move up and add Ford to Jonah Williams in their day one haul.32ND PICK - TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS - OL, DALTON RISNER (KANSAS STATE) - TRADE WITH NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTSChuck Cook-USA TODAY SportsIf you think the Patriots are replacing Rob Gronkowski with Austin Seferian-Jenkins, you haven’t been paying attention to ASJ’s career very closely. In my mind, this trade works out to Tampa Bay shipping their 2019 third-round pick (No. 70) and tight end Cameron Brate to the Patriots in exchange for the 32nd pick. There may be some smaller transactions involved, like maybe a conditional fourth in 2020 or something, but that’s the jist of it.With the pick, Tampa Bay selects the best interior offensive lineman available which is what they likely would have done with their third-round pick according to recent Locked On Bucs guest, JC Cornell. Now, with their defensive quarterback and a boost to the offensive line on day one, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers come back on day two with apair of second-round picks (No. 39 and No. 43) to work with.Whew! This is it. The last mock draft - for me - prior to this year’s NFL Draft. It’s been fun, and like you, I can’t wait to see how wrong I am and how it all really shakes out. Thanks for reading!
When the NFL announced its Pro Bowl rosters on Tuesday evening Kam Chancellor Jersey , only two members of the Seattle Seahawks made the squad, All Universe linebacker Bobby Wagner and rookie phenom punter Michael Dickson. Of the multiple Seahawks who made the team as alternates, one of the players who received the most outcry about having been snubbed is Frank Clark, who is an alternate, but is not a starter. Thus, the question becomes, was he snubbed? Fans of the Hawks (and other teams) reacted on social media and elsewhere regarding the omission of Clark from the NFC squad. Here’s a sampling of some of the reaction on Twitter: So, obviously, multiple fans think Clark was snubbed, so let’s turn to the stats and see. There’s no doubt that Clark is easily having the best season of his young NFL career, as he has been a terror for opposing quarterbacks all season, recording 12 sacks and 21 quarterback hits. How does that compare to the three defensive ends that made the NFC Pro Bowl team? Frank Clark and Pro Bowl DEs rushing the passer in 2018PlayerSacksQB HitsTotal PressureSnaps PlayedPlayerSacksQB HitsTotal PressureSnaps PlayedSo, by those measures Clark is certainly in the discussion for being in place when it comes time for the Pro Bowl to announce the players who made it. However, these are obviously all numbers that are accumulated in the passing game Doug Baldwin Jersey , so the question follows, where does Clark stack up when it comes to making plays in the running game, and here we start to see some separation between Clark and the other players. Frank Clark and Pro Bowl DEs against the run in 2018PlayerTacklesTFLSnaps PlayedPlayerTacklesTFLSnaps PlayedThere is zero doubt that when looking at these from a run-stopping perspective, Frank Clark comes in below the other three. Thus, when combining the fact that the pass rushing numbers are largely the same for all four players, the fact that Clark’s contributions in stopping the run fall short of the other three leads me to believe that Pro Bowl selection process actually made the correct decision putting him as an alternate. Now, can an argument be made that Clark should have made the Pro Bowl? Absolutely. But in my opinion, the three guys who did make it, are the three guys who should have made it. Moving on to one of the other players for whom there have been some loud voices on social media, Tyler Lockett was also not selected to the Pro Bowl roster. This in spite of having recorded 800 yards and 9 touchdowns in an offense that throws the ball less often than any other offense in the NFL, which appears to have been the problem. Yes, there is no doubt that Lockett is having a phenomenally efficient season, and that he has returned to health in 2018 to fill the void left by the departure of Paul Richardson and Jimmy Graham. However, players don’t make the Pro Bowl based on efficiency because fans still like big counting numbers. Thus Russell Wilson Jersey , let’s go ahead and compare Lockett’s 2018 numbers to those players who did make the Pro Bowl: Julio Jones, Michael Thomas, Adam Thielen and Davante Adams. Tyler Lockett next to 2018 Pro Bowl WRsPlayerReceptionsTargetsCatch RateYardsYards/ReceptionTDPlayerReceptionsTargetsCatch RateYardsYards/ReceptionTDAs you see, the last row in the table is an anonymous player I’ve named the “Mystery Man” because if there is a wide receiver in the NFC who warrants having made the Pro Bowl roster over one of the four receivers that actually did make it, that would be my vote. Unfortunately, Mystery Man isn’t a real person, it’s the combined stats of Lockett and Doug Baldwin. So, yes, there is absolutely zero debate whatsoever that Lockett is having a phenomenal season, and that his phenomenal season is the result of a historically efficient season. At the end of the day Pro Bowl voters want big numbers, and no receiver in the current Seahawks offense is going to put up the kind of numbers necessary to make the Pro Bowl. Thus, if you have an issue with Lockett having been left off the Pro Bowl roster, it seems more appropriate to take it up with Pete Carroll and Brian Schottenheimer than it does to complain about the process or how Lockett never stood a chance in the offensive system in which he plays. Just to demonstrate how little the Seahawks actually throw the ball, and how few opportunities he actually gets as a receiver Mychal Kendricks Jersey , here are Lockett’s numbers compared to the four Pro Bowl tight ends from both the AFC and the NFC. Tyler Lockett 2018 stats versus Pro Bowl TEsPlayerReceptionsTargetsCatch RateYardsYards/ReceptionTDPlayerReceptionsTargetsCatch RateYardsYards/ReceptionTDLooking at that, the only thing I can think of is to just imagine how good Eric Ebron could be if he had a real quarterback throwing the ball to him.Report: Seahawks sign WR Malik Turner to practice squad When Akeem King was promoted to the Seattle Seahawks 53-man roster ahead of last Sunday’s Week 1 loss to the Denver Broncos, it left a vacant spot on the 10-man practice squad. It looks like that void has been filled.Aaron Wilson reported on Tuesday that wide receiver Malik Turner, who was part of Seattle’s 90-man roster and had several impressive moments in preseason, will rejoin the team as a PS member.Turner caught a touchdown pass from Alex McGough in the team’s second preseason outing against the Los Angeles Chargers, and nearly came down with a phenomenal touchdown grab against the Oakland Raiders, but was ruled out of bounds upon further review. Now it’s hard to ignore that there’s a real possibility they’ve brought back Turner because they intend to promote one of Caleb Scott or (more likely) Keenan Reynolds, as Doug Baldwin is expected to miss some time due to a reported Grade 2 MCL tear.Either way, Turner has garnered unprompted praise from coach Pete Carroll during preseason, and it’s good to see him at least brought back to the practice squad.
Today we take a closer look at Michigan linebacker Devin Bush and examine if he can be a great fit in the 49ers defense."Today we are going to take a closer look at Michigan product linebacker and Devin Bush. Devin Bush played a big role in the Wolverine defense and had a productive season in 2018. As he gets ready to transition into the NFL Womens Joshua Garnett Jersey , let us further explore and see how Bush can be a fit in the 49ers defense.Combine Results:40 Yard Dash: 4.43Bench Press: 21 RepsVertical Jump: 40.5”Broad Jump: 124.0”3 Cone: 6.9320 Yard Shuttle: 4.23Measurables:Height: 5’11”Weight: 234 lbs.Hands: 9 5/8”Arms: 32”Summary:Devin Bush had an outstanding final season in Ann Arbor being named the Big10 Defensive Player of the Year and a second-team All-American. He recorded 80 tackles, 9.5 tackles for a loss, 5 sacks, and 6 passes broken up. While he might be considered a bit, undersized Bush has a filled-out frame to support and absorb the hits and contact. Bush plays a physical brand of football.Bush has dual-threat abilities as both a run-stopping and pass protecting linebacker. This adds value to Bush as a potential three-down starter at the next level. Bush uses his eyes well, and has great anticipation for where the play is going to occur. His eyes follow the quarterback’s eyes which in turn, allows Bush to position himself to where the ball is going.Bush has a natural blend of upper and lower body strength, with good, consistent body control and balance through contact. Bush has demonstrated his ability to deliver leveraged hand strikes against blocks. Bush also demonstrates patience against run blocking. Trusts his lower body strength and legs to drive through upright blockers. Bush has great initial burst and all-around speed and has the traits to be a sideline-to-sideline runner. He will be able to defend against runners and receivers horizontally, especially in the short and intermediate levels of the field. Bush doesn’t allow himself to get caught up in crowded lanes and navigates his way through traffic to make clean tackles on ball carriers on running plays. Bush is probably the most versatile linebacker in this draft class.Bush has experience as a pass rusher and blitzer and doesn’t show his hand to blockers on designed blitz packages. One big advantage Bush has with his size is his ability to slip by blockers through narrow gaps and lanes when rushing the passer on critical passing downs. Is Devin Bush a fit for the 49ers? Detroit Free Press-USA TODAY SportsI truly believe that Bush is the type of linebacker that the 49ers are looking for in the defense that they want to employ. Yes, he is a somewhat undersized for the position. However WomensJimmy Garoppolo Jersey , his speed and ability to cover the middle of the field from sideline to sideline is a big plus in today’s pass-friendly league. Bush has a lot of value as a potential three-down linebacker with his strong abilities as a defender against both the pass and run. Add on the abilities to create disruption in the opponent’s backfield and producing sacks against the passer and you really do have a well-rounded linebacker. His filled-out frame should be the final check mark to dispel any worries about his size. The fact of the matter is, Bush is a day one talent. With that said, is there any scenario that has Bush landing with the 49ers? Chances are slim, but not totally out of the question. What if the 49ers traded out of the second overall pick, and acquired additional draft capital? Perhaps another first round selection from鈥ough鈥ough鈥he Oakland Raiders鈥nd used that additional first rounder on Bush in the early twenties. Again, chances are slim but as I always say with the draft鈥ever say never! What are YOUR thoughts on Devin Bush? If the 49ers acquire another pick later in the first round is Devin Bush an option? Please share in the comments below! Tuesday was a busy day for the 49ers coaching staff. They hired 2 new assistants to the defensive staff. Kirk Kocurek was hired as the defensive line coach after spending last season in the same role with the Miami Dolphins. The 49ers had an opening after letting go of Jeff Zgonina. The 49ers are also hiring Joe Woods as their defensive passing game coordinator. Joe spent last season as the Denver Broncos’ defensive coordinator and has a long history of coaching defensive backs. He replaces Jeff Hafley who went to Ohio State.Tuesday also brought a few recognitions for some of the 49ers. Biggest news being that DeForest Buckner will officially make his 1st Pro Bowl. He is taking Fletcher Cox’s roster spot on the team. Pro Football Writers of America named their All-NFC team on Tuesday. TE George Kittle and KR Richie James were named on the team. That was not the only recognition Richie James received. He along with Mike McGlinchey were named to ESPN’s All Rookie team. The season was not what the team expected to have, but it is great to see some of the players recognized for their performances. Lastly, this Antonio Brown talk will drag on for months. The 49ers will obviously have talks about AB because he is such a special player. When a player of his caliber is an option, you have to explore it. But do not expect to have anything happen quickly. His name will be brought up a lot this offseason. If the 49ers can get him and it makes business sense, no reason not to take him. He will elevate this offense. Driven, purposeful – his ability to teach the position – as a guy that played at a high level and also just understanding the booby traps and the tricks that defenses lay to catch quarterbacks. The winds of change have been blowing throughout Paul Brown Stadium since the Bengals’ season ended.Marvin Lewis was finally let go after 16 years, and his replacement was quickly found in the form of Zac Taylor. Letting Lewis go and hiring a young up-and-coming coach was something few, if anyone in Cincinnati thought was ever going to happen under Mike Brown’s watch. On Tuesday, the Bengals held their introductory press conference for Taylor, where Brown also spoke to reporters. One of the most notable items to come from Brown’s remarks included a comment about how losing the fanbase played a part in the coaching change. “Marvin is my friend, and I’m not going to get in to any comments that would seem to any way disparage him,” said Brown. “He did a wonderful job when he was here Cordy Glenn Jersey , but it just was time, in my opinion, and the opinion of others, to give us a new direction. “We had lost some of the faith in our fanbase. That was clear. That sent a loud message. I think we’ve done it at the appropriate time. We tried to give every opportunity for otherwise. That’s behind us. I want to look to the future.”While it was easy to assume fan attendance played a part in the change, it’s still interesting to hear those words come from Brown’s mouth. For the most part, he’s always had the approach of not caring at all what fans and media think of his team. It’s refreshing to hear that Brown and the Bengals actually do care about the fans, who were thrilled to learn Lewis was out and Taylor was in.It’s also interesting to hear Brown essentially say it was his call to let Lewis go. When that move happened, there were mixed reports on whether it was a mutual parting or if Lewis was effectively fired. Regardless, change has finally arrived, and not a moment too soon.
Who is Jahlani Tavai? We find out with help from a Hawaii football beat writer.EDTShareTweetShareShareGetting to know Jahlani Tavai with Hawaii Warrior WorldStephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY SportsThe second round was quite the round for Lions fans. They had visions of sugar plums and Amani Oruwariye dancing in their heads. But they would not get sugar plums. They would not get Amani Oruwariye (yet). They got Hawaii linebacker Jahlani Tavai. They got to say “who?”Lions twitter exploded with displeasure. Everyone was sure of a few things. The Lions picked another bustThis was Teez Tabor all over againThis is Ikaika Alama-Francis all over againThe Lions don’t care what any of us thinkThe Lions could have got Tavai in the seventh roundAll of those things might be true. The fourth one is definitely true. The other four options might be proven wrong in the end. Who knows? I believe the most common knock on Tavai is that many hadn’t even heard of him at the time. Believe me, I hadn’t either. That’s why I needed to go find out more. So I went to Jeremy Reisman and asked him to send me to Hawaii to find out. He said sure, but he did not make with the plane ticket. So I wound up having to just send an email. I got in touch with Hawaii sports beat writer Stephen Tsai of Hawaii Warrior World and the Honolulu Star Advertiser. He started with some background info, noting that Tavai actually played rugby in high school and was recruited as a nose tackle by Hawaii, but 250 pounder never quite filled out weight wise. Tavai also had a pretty decent career at Hawaii playing all over the defense and special teams. “He had more than 100 tackles during his sophomore and junior years,” Tsai told us. “As a sophomore, he was mostly a rush end. He played middle linebacker as a junior. Last year, his senior season, UH went with a 4-2-5 alignment. Tavai played middle, outside linebacker, stand-up nose, edge setter and rush end. As a freshman Womens Calvin Johnson Jersey , he aligned as basically a rush end. In the 2015 regular-season finale, punter Rigo Sanchez (now with the Colts) had to take care of a family emergency in California. Tavai was used as a punter that game.”Looks like Tavai is something of a jack of all trades. But as far what he’ll do in Detroit, the belief is the Matt Patricia will use him in something of a Dont’a Hightower-like role. But there are, admittedly, some red flags. Jahlani is coming off a shoulder injury that required surgery, and he had a run in with police early in 2018. But no charges were filed and some argue Tavai actually did the right thing. “They were at a nightclub and a teammate of Jahlani got into an argument with another guy and that guy bumped into the teammate’s girlfriend,” Tsai explained. “The two went outside and began to fight and Jahlani removed the guy off his teammate and was arrested along with the two others. No charges were filed.” Lions general manager Bob Quinn noted that the team weighed the incident, but after talking with Tavai multiple times throughout the draft process, they had no concerns about it.“I think a lot of people in this room would’ve stepped in and tried to do the right thing as well,” Quinn said. “So, it was unfortunate. He made a mistake, and we are totally fine with him character wise Zach Zenner Jersey White , one thousand percent.”As far as strengths, Tsai says Tavai is a “a 250-pounder, and he can hit. As a junior, he had 89 runs stops in the tackle box. He also can help on the edge as a stand-up or hand-in-dirt pass rusher. He’s a very good open-field tackler.”But his weakness is that he doesn’t have very much cover experience due to Hawaii’s five defensive back scheme. That should cause a little worry since coverage skills is something the Lions linebacker who are already on the roster struggle with. It’s hard to know what Tavai will turn out to be for the Lions. What’s been confirmed over and over again is that he’s a great guy and a hard worker. There was clearly something about him that had the Lions excited on Friday night. We’ll have to wait to see what that is. You want versatility? You want run defending? You want Ed Oliver."WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections Detroit Lions NewsDetroit Lions NotesDetroit Lions AnalysisDetroit Lions TransactionsDetroit Lions Game RecapsNFL DraftDetroit Lions OpinionThe Detroit Lions should draft Houston DT Ed OliverNew,16commentsYou want versatility? You want run defending? You want Ed Oliver. EDTShareTweetShareShareThe Detroit Lions should draft Houston DT Ed OliverTommy Gilligan-USA TODAY SportsAs a fan of the NFL, it’s easy to get caught up in gaudy sack numbers and be hypnotized by flashy pass-rushing moves. But the NFL is all about subtlety and grunt work, especially in the trenches. So while a lot of my cohorts are busy drooling over one-trick-pony Brian Burns, I am here to tell you Houston’s defensive tackle Ed Oliver is the player you should be fantasizing about right now. Oliver has the potential to add his name to the genre-defining defensive tackles that have started to take over the NFL. Your Geno Atkins or Michael Bennetts or Mike Daniels, or, yes, Aaron Donalds of the world. Defense is starting to evolve, and quickness is the name of the game. If I were to ask you the two biggest things that this Detroit Lions coaching staff values in a defensive player Womens Matt Prater Jersey , what are the first two things that come to mind? Versatility and the ability to defend the run. There is no prospect in this entire draft class that can offer more in these categories than Ed Oliver. As a run defender—mind you, playing as an “undersized” nose tackle—Oliver has been unstoppable. Three straight years of 14.5 tackles for loss or more. But if PFF grades are your thing, take this snippet from the advanced analytics website. As for his ability to rush the pass, that was a little limited due to his use at Houston. Mostly used as a nose tackle in college, Oliver’s insane athleticism wasn’t given the opportunity to show itself enough. And let’s not kid ourselves, this dude’s athleticism is off the charts:And his versatility makes him an easy pick for Detroit at eight. The big question that seems to arise with Oliver is simply, “Where would he play in Detroit his first year?” My answer: wherever the hell you want to. As Lions Wire’s Erik Schlitt points out, he fits Bob Quinn’s athletic profile at five different positions: nose tackle, 3/5 technique DT, down defensive end, jack linebacker, and off-the-ball linebacker. Yes Womens Kerry Hyder Jersey , you read that right. Oliver fits the profile of an NFL linebacker, and he’s open to the idea of playing there, too:While Oliver may not technically be a “starter” in his rookie year, he’d certainly make an impact as a player you could use just about anywhere on any down. He’d be the Lions’ wild card in his first year, then give Detroit flexibility when contract talks start with players like Damon Harrison, A’Shawn Robinson or Devon Kennard. And Ed Oliver is just getting started. Some would say he was misused at Houston, who shoved him in a role that was hard for him to reach his full potential. Put Oliver with the Lions’ premier defensive line coaching staff who helped turn around A’Shawn’s career and has already made a star out of Da’Shawn Hand, and, oh boy, you have yourself a freakin’ game-changer.

Fair or not, that will likely be the weight on the shoulders of whoever the Green Bay Packers hire as their next head coach. It’s NFL Conference Championship week Senio Kelemete Jersey , and I haven’t given a speck of thought to the Houston Texans’ upcoming offseason. There will be months of it. Nine, in fact, until the Texans play another game. There will be all of February to talk talk about free agency, and March will be split between both free agency the upcoming draft, with April full of draft talk. All that will be here soon. What we have right now is finite. Three more games, soon to disappear altogether entirely. Loyal reader, I wanted to take a second from my monomaniacal pursuit to summarize the resources available to the Texans this offseason for everyone who is in that mode. For those who have already moved forward to 2019. As of right now, the Texans have $67,097 Black Tytus Howard Jersey ,417.00 in cap space. This is the sixth most in the league. They’ll be paying $1,769,452 in dead money to Jeff Allen, Braxton Miller, Tyler Ervin, and Treston Decoud. Remember them? This number is also before potential cuts. Houston can save $14 million if they cut Demaryius Thomas, $9,069,000 if they cut Kevin Johnson White Tytus Howard Jersey , $6,203,125 if they cut Lamar Miller, $2,687,500 if they cut Ryan Griffin, and dare I say it, $13 million if they cut J.J. Watt. Whitney Mercilus is also a possible trade piece; Houston would save $6,250 Youth Tytus Howard Jersey ,000 if they cut ties with Mercilus. $67 million is a lot of money, especially for a playoff team to have at their disposal. The joys of having a quarterback on a rookie contract. The Texans have fifteen unrestricted free agents, three restricted free agents, and one exclusive rights free agent. That’s a long list. Rather than waste paper, here’s the list of free agents Houston has via Over The Cap. In addition to the $67 million in cap space, players they can release to create more room, and the 17 free agents they have this offseason, the Texans have draft picks. They finally have their first and second round picks again after the [NAME REDACTED] trade zapped a second rounder; their 2018 first rounder was lost in moving up to select Deshaun Watson. By trading second team All-Pro tackle Duane Brown in 2017, the Texans gained a second rounder in the 2019 NFL Draft. Houston will select 23rd overall in the first round Tytus Howard Jersey 2019 , and then have back-to-back second round picks with the 54th and 55th overall selections before moving on to their third, fifth, sixth and seventh round selections as well. The fourth rounder is now Denver’s via the acquisition of Demaryius Thomas back in October. These are the resources Brian Gaine has to work with this spring. Keep this in mind as you scour upcoming free agents and stroll through cyberspace on the backs of Mock Draft camels. Now, back to the 2019 NFL Playoffs. Lamm signs with Cleveland"Kendall Lamm was the Texans week one starter in 2017. The Texans gave up ten sacks to Jacksonville that game with Lamm as the left tackle to fill in for the recently traded Duane Brown. Tom Savage was benched for Deshaun Watson. Lamm was eventually replaced by Juli’en Davenport. Despite his atrocious 2017 when Lamm was one of the worst tackles in football, the Texans kept him on the roster for 2018. The tackle position was scrambled for weeks after starting right tackle Seantrel Henderson smashed his ankle in week one. Houston eventually settled on Davenport at left and Lamm at right. Last season Lamm was a decent enough pass blocker. 2017’s embarrassment was blacked out. He was a horrendous run blocker though and was almost unplayable against Philadelphia and Indy, cratering the run game on his own. Still, you gotta be proud of the guy to come from putrid to kind of crappy on the span of a year. You gotta grind to get the view. If he continues to evolve as a player it's going to happen in Cleveland. Today the Browns signed him for 2-years $7 million. The Texans current tackle combination is the same as it was in week one 2017—Davenport and Henderson.
Sean McVay’s Los Angeles Rams hung 30 points on a ferocious Dallas Cowboys defense on Saturday night Jaire Alexander Jersey , providing more evidence for the NFL’s lust to find a coach who can reinvigorate a program the way McVay has. But it should have been 50 and a romp, rather than 30 and a close, single-score win. For all the love for McVay as a play designer and playcaller — creating chunk plays and wanting to hit the home run every snap — he’s not a particularly aggressive coach. If Matt LaFleur brings anything from his time in LA, hopefully for him it’s an understanding that attacking in all facets gives his team the best chance to win, a lesson McVay hasn’t quite learned. It may seem strange to criticize a coach who punted just once against the 9th ranked defense by DVOA, but here we are. On back-to-back drives early in the game, McVay settled for field goals inside the 10-yard line, the first on 4th-and-3 from the 7, and the second on fourth-and-goal at the 5. Two impressive drives led to six points and the Rams still trailed the Cowboys 7-6 after the second one.The game’s only punt from the Rams came after the Cowboys declined a penalty that would have replayed third down, giving McVay fourth-and-2 at the Dallas 47. Fourth-and-short in plus territory should be an automatic decision, especially for an offense as efficient as the Rams with Todd Gurley. McVay punted up eight with the Cowboys having just marched down the field and making it a one-score game with a touchdown. This isn’t a small sample size problem either. The Rams were among the least aggressive teams in the league last season going on fourth down, attempting just 15 conversions Josh Jackson Jersey , tied for 20th in the NFL. And the only two teams worse at converting those fourth downs were the hapless Cardinals and Bills, in part because two of those were actually fakes in the kicking game not traditional conversions. Meanwhile, they were second in the league in attempting field goals, underscoring McVay’s reticence to go for it on fourth down. That’s a tough look for the SoCal wunderkind. But all attempted conversions have context. So I went back and looked at all 41 field goal attempts from the Rams and found a troubling trend emerge. Considering three of those kicks ended the half, the real number we should be working with is 38 where McVay had a real decision to make. McVay settled for field goals 13 times on fourth-and-short inside the 20 and 11 times inside the 10 with eight being in goal-to-go situations. Of those 38 attempts not counting end-of-half kicks, 19 of them would have taken four yards or fewer to convert for first downs on fourth down. Making matters even worse, the Rams punted four times in plus territory, a cardinal sin of game management, including once inside their opponent’s 40. In essence, he’s making the wrong choice to kick half the time. That’s absolutely brutal. Thousands of words have been written about the flaw in most NFL coaches’ logic in those moments (I’d start here with this piece from Brian Burke who now works in ESPN’s analytics department). Particularly with a good quarterback, an excellent run game, and a creative offensive coach Oren Burks Jersey , these should be gimme decisions. You go for it. Ask Mike McCarthy in the NFC Championship Game. In fact, let’s ask McCarthy, who was at one time the most aggressive coach in the league on fourth down and two-point conversion situations. How did the Packers fare in these situations under McCarthy and his disciple Joe Philbin in 2018? Mason Crosby attempted the third-most field goals of any kicker in the league with 37, but an incredible nine of them were end-of-half or game situations, so the Packers really only had 28 decisions to make. We’re also throwing out Week 17 because ... well, DeShone Kizer. The Packers settled for a field goal attempt just four times on fourth-and-short from inside the 20, with two of those coming against the Jets under Philbin, and not a single attempt inside the 10. Green Bay kicked twice in goal-to-go situations, but one kick was from the 20 thanks to a penalty and the other from the 11.In other words, the Packers consistently made the right calls to kick or go for it, attempting 20 fourth downs in all this season. If there was one major flaw with game calling for the Packers it was the punting in plus territory, something they did nine times last year J’Mon Moore Jersey , but nearly all of them were on fourth-and-10 or more. So how does this all tie into Matt LaFleur? Simple: there are plenty of ways to want to be like McVay, but this can’t be one of them. The same is true for McCarthy, who was himself an exceedingly bright coach for a long time before his methods grew dull. LaFleur has the most skilled quarterback in the league, a top offensive line, and plenty of playmakers. Mason Crosby can provide solid reliability but the Packers have to end their ugly cycling of taking the points. Be more forward-thinking and trust what the probabilities tell us about going for it: do it more often. Play to win rather than play not to lose, especially with Aaron Rodgers under center. Listen when the quarterback gives the head signal to go for it in opponent territory and don’t be afraid to go for it in the red zone rather than settle for field goals. Fixing the red zone offense will be one of LaFleur’s top tasks, but one of the truly unique things about McVay is his ability to call his best play regardless of the situation. Apply that same idea to fourth down and stop worrying about getting six yards when it’s fourth-and-five. Call the best play and pick up the most yardage possible. Rather than take the points, trust the quarterback, trust the offense, and get touchdowns not field goals. We’re all hoping for a great game on Sunday night, when the Packers face the Patriots, providing the NFL with only its second Aaron Rodgers–Tom Brady matchup ever. Patriots coach Bill Belichick should be doing all he can to make it a horrible game. The best way to beat Aaron Rodgers is to give him no chance to beat you. Because Marquez Valdes-Scantling Jersey , barring a boneheaded play by Ty Montgomery, Rodgers will. And the only way to give him no chance to beat you is to score so many points in the first three quarters that there’s nothing Rodgers can do to change the outcome when, like he did against the 49ers, he slides into that zone that allows him to make any and every throw that he needs to move the ball and score enough points to win. That’s the one thing — and perhaps the only one thing — Rodgers has in common with Tim Tebow. When Tebowmania was on full boil in 2011, the Patriots beat him twice by blowing out the Broncos so badly that, by the time the fourth quarter rolled around and Tebow transmogrified from Bazooka Joe into Joe Montana, it was too late to matter.Yes, it’s easier said than done. Sure, blowing out the opponent is always the objective. But on Sunday night there will be an even greater sense of urgency to build a lead and expand a lead and render Rodgers irrelevant by the time the final 15 minutes begin to tick.
Notes: Detroit Lions earn A+ grade for game vs. Patriots The Detroit Lions have garnered some love. After a brutal outing against the Jets to start the season and a disappointing loss to the 49ers the following week White Amani Oruwariye Jersey , the Lions managed to upset the Patriots in prime time. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox gave the Lions an A+ for their performance on Sunday. He credited the improved defensive scheme and the effective offensive playcalling for the win. Coupled with finally getting a 100-yard rusher, there were plenty of positives from Matt Patricia’s first career victory. The Lions received an F in Week 1 and a C- in Week 2. Their season grade currently stands at a C+, but the team showed vast improvements against New England. After a rough start to the season, Frank Ragnow rebounded nicely against the Patriots:Ragnow and his fellow offensive linemen were creating huge holes for the run game. Brandon Thorn breaks down some runs in this thread:Andrea Kremer and Hannah Storm will be the first ever all-female duo to broadcast an NFL game later this season.ESPN interviewed Fortnite icon Tyler “Ninja” Blevins about his Lions fandom, as well as how it felt to meet Lions players new and old.The Lions worked out another former New England Patriot this week: Because of the Lions’ inconsistent schedule thus far Frank Ragnow Jersey , Matt Patricia hasn’t been getting much sleep thus far. Players and fans all over the league are mad about the new “roughing the passer” rules regarding defenders using their entire body weight when landing on quarterbacks. The competition committee reportedly isn’t very happy either, and while they won’t (and can’t) make any rule changes midseason, they may be enforcing the rule differently going forward, according to a Washington Post report. On September 3, just a week before their season opener against the New York Jets Jarrad Davis Jersey , the Detroit Lions committed their future to safety Quandre Diggs. That day, they inked the 25-year-old defender to a three-year, $18.6 million extension. As always, there’s some concern that when a player gets paid, they lose some motivation. It’s hard to play with a chip on your shoulder when you’ve been given direct affirmation like that. But Diggs insisted nothing would change.“I’m always going to have motivation T.J. Hockenson Detroit Lions Jersey , man,” Diggs said back in September. “I’m a sixth-round draft pick, so at the end of the day 32 teams passed me up, so I’m always going to have a chip on my shoulder. Ain’t gonna be nothing different.”It didn’t take long to realize he wasn’t messing around. On the very first defensive play of the season, Diggs jumped in front of Sam Darnold’s first career NFL pass and took it back for six. Of course the rest of the game—and the rest of the season—wouldn’t go so merrily. Diggs’ play remained at a high level T.J. Hockenson Jersey 2019 , but the players around him struggled. While Diggs finished with a 78 tackles and three tackles for loss—both team-highs among defensive backs—the team finished 30th in passer rating allowed and t-27th in yards per attempt allowed. But Diggs played through it all, continually laying big hits along the way, and playing nearly every single defensive snap of the season. When the season finale came, and the Lions had nothing more to play for than pride, Diggs did what he always did White T.J. Hockenson Jersey , make tackle after tackle. And while the 2018 season didn’t produce a lot of memorable moments for the Lions fans, Diggs produced one last positive memory to go out on. After starting the season with a pick-six on the very first play of the season, Diggs picked DeShone Kizer on what would be the final defensive play of the 2018 season—sealing Detroit’s first shutout in 22 years. Sunday may have been the final game for Glover Quin, who has been the heart and soul of the Lions’ secondary for the past six years. But his sendoff may have also signaled the start of a new era; an era in which Quandre Diggs—a Pro Bowl alternate—takes over the mantle of emotional leader among the defensive backs. He certainly went out on a good impression.
Bengals Week 1 rookie report: Price rebounds Jordan Willis Jersey , Hubbard plays both sides What a difference a week makes. Two Thursdays ago, the Bengals hosted the Colts for their preseason finale, and every healthy rookie on the roster got playing time. On Sunday, nearly half the Bengals inactives list was composed of the rookies who made the team. This may be an inclination of what’s to come this season if the Bengals remain healthy (fingers crossed), but most of the rookies who did make their debut were heavily relied on in a comeback victory on the road. Here’s our rookie report for the Bengals Week 1 victory against the Colts.Did not playMalik JeffersonMark WaltonAuden TateBilly PriceThe regular season debut for Price could’ve started a little better than it did. On the first passing play of the Bengals offense, Price was walked back and then ran over three yards deep into the pocket by nose tackle Al Woods. The pressure he allowed forced an errant throw from quarterback Andy Dalton, which became an interception that was nearly returned for a touchdown.Welcome to the NFL.Price mostly avoided miscues throughout the rest of the game, as the run blocking from the Bengals offensive line was solid, but noticeably struggled when attacking the right edge. Price’s struggles with reach blocks and excellence in space came up like they did all preseason. If we’re treating this like a stock report, Price’s performance hasn’t really moved the needle for him. He stays playing at the tune of his strengths and weaknesses, and everything will be tested in a few days against a much better defensive interior that the Ravens deploy.Jessie BatesPlaying 82 snaps to begin your career is a tall task Carl Lawson Jersey , but Bates handled it well, especially with his running mate Shawn Williams ejected from the game in the first quarter. Bates finished with eight tackles, with only one of them coming as a defensive “stop”:The Bengals defense was on the field for a long time in the first half, as the offense had some stalls that led to the defense getting tired out. Most of the damage quarterback Andrew Luck did was on short passes over the middle, and Bates’ coverage wasn’t as tested as his ability to make open-field tackles coming downhill. He looked pretty good back there, all things considered.Sam HubbardDespite the defense’s long day, Hubbard was called upon for only 8.5% of the defense’s snaps, a stark difference to Carl Lawson (51%) and Jordan Willis (39.5%). But he was the only player to play on both the offense and defense:Hubbard is no Domata Peko, but he did play tight end at Cincinnati’s Moeller High School when he was about 90 pounds lighter than he is now. The Bengals had all four of their tight ends active for this game, and they figure to use some of them at h-back now that Ryan Hewitt is gone and Cethan Carter is on injured reserve. But this time, it was Hubbard who was called upon to be a battering ram. Seven snaps should be the lowest amount of snaps Hubbard gets all year Tyler Boyd Jersey , as he’ll surely be featured in the defensive line rotation more as the season progresses.Darius PhillipsPhillips made the team not just as depth at cornerback, but for special teams. He outperformed newly-extended Alex Erickson as both a punt and kickoff returner, but it was Erickson who received every chance there. Phillips saw six special teams snaps and got an assisted tackle for the final kickoff of the game following safety Clayton Fejedelem’s game-winning fumble recovery that was returned for a touchdown.Erickson had nothing to work with returning punts, as he fair caught most of them, and he only got the chance to return one kickoff. Phillips’ day would’ve probably went the same way if he was back there. The first real test is done and over with, now the rookies have only a few days rest before the team takes on the Ravens at home on Thursday night. Price’s aforementioned game will be extremely telling of his ability, and Bates and the defense should expect a similar offensive attack with quarterback Joe Flacco and his new group of receivers coming off a 47-point performance against the Bills. As Zac Taylor and the Los Angeles Rams are now preparing for the Super Bowl, Bengals fans are will have to continue waiting for his hiring to be made official. For one, it would be nice to have Taylor in Cincinnati focusing on the next season already. But it would also be nice for the Bengals to start replenishing their depleted coaching staff. While it is nice that Taylor is getting vital playoff experience, some Bengals fans are worried that he might be missing the opportunity to hire his staff. The concern is understandable. Prime coordinators who have been linked to the Bengals like Todd Monken, Darrell Bevell Nick Vigil Jersey , and Gary Kubiak are going to other teams. Meanwhile, in Cincinnati, the Bengals have let go of their offensive and defensive coordinators, running backs coach, offensive line coach, and linebackers coach. From one perspective, it may seem that Taylor is going to be stuck with the NFL’s leftovers by the time he finally gets to hire his own staff. However, this fear is not as well founded as it seems. In reality, while it seems like the Bengals are just sitting on their hands waiting for Taylor, they actually have a list of assistants already lined up. Taylor went into his interview with a list of names, but won’t be able to hire anyone until he is officially the head coach. The Bengals are not losing out on the assistants that they want. If an assistant was promised the job in Cincinnati and if they are a good fit Jake Fisher Jersey , then they wouldn’t want to go elsewhere. They wouldn’t take a job knowing that they walked away from a better job somewhere else. The assistants being hired by other organizations are probably not even being considered by Taylor and the Bengals. But even if that was the case, that would still not be a reason to worry.Having a head coach is significantly more important than having good coordinators, because the head coach will be around much longer than any of his assistants. For instance, when Marvin Lewis was first hired in 2003, his offensive coordinator was Bob Bratkowski, and his defensive coordinator was Leslie Frazier. While Bratkowski lasted until the 2010 season, Frazier was gone after two years. In Marvin Lewis’ best season, the 12-4 campaign in 2015, he was on his third offensive coordinator and his fourth defensive coordinator. In Lewis’ 16 years as the Bengals head coach, Lewis had five offensive coordinators and six defensive coordinators. That means that Lewis got three to four years out of each coordinator before they were either fired or hired by another team. The point is, the Bengals (unofficially) hired Zac Taylor Tyler Kroft Jersey , not Zac Taylor’s staff. Yes, it is important that he finds good coordinators for his first season as a head coach. But it’s more important to have a dependable head coach. The Bengals don’t just want to find Marvin Lewis 2.0 this offseason. They want to hit a home run that gets them into a Super Bowl someday. That means they have to find the next big name in coaching. They believe they have found that in Taylor, so it is more important to get him the coordinators he wants, because he will be with the team a long time if everything goes according to plan.Taylor could be the head coach for the next 16 years for all we know. The offensive and defensive coordinators will not be around for nearly that long. If he is anything like Lewis, he won’t be able to keep any of his coordinators around for more than five or six years at the most. One mark of his success would be if his coordinators keep getting hired out from under him. That would actually be a good thing, because it would mean that he is developing them and getting the best out of them.It makes no sense to worry about a position that will be vacated in the next few years anyways. The main thing is that the Bengals have their head coach who will, in theory, be there until he retires. It’s better to get Taylor and let him experience success in the playoffs at the risk of missing out on a few of 2019’s top assistants. If Taylor is the great head coach that the Bengals think he is, he will find his guys and develop them. The Bengals have to trust that Taylor will assemble the best possible staff.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Bengals coach Marvin Lewis exuded confidence when he fired his defensive coordinator and assumed leadership of the NFL’s worst defense. All he’s gotten is two more losses that have essentially scuttled Cincinnati’s fading hopes. The Bengals are free falling Carl Lawson Jersey White , with no sign of slowing down. And now their starting quarterback is hurt, too.Baker Mayfield set a Browns rookie record with four touchdown passes, and Cleveland ended one of the NFL’s longest streaks of road futility on Sunday with a 35-20 victory over the hapless Bengals, who lost Andy Dalton to a thumb injury. Now what? The Bengals (5-6) can’t do the simple things right, contributing to a streak of five losses in six games. They’ve fallen from first in the AFC North to third, only a half-game ahead of the Browns.“I’ve got to prepare them better,” Lewis said. “OK? It rests with me.”Against the Browns, they were overmatched from the start.Cleveland (4-6-1) won on the road for the first time since 2015 Womens Ryan Glasgow Jersey , emphatically snapping a streak of 25 straight road losses that was one shy of the Lions’ NFL record. The Browns also ended a run of seven straight losses to their intrastate rival.“It hurts,” Bengals receiver Tyler Boyd said. “It hurts a lot.”The Bengals thought they had one advantage: Hue Jackson on their sideline. It didn’t matter. The Browns fired Jackson a month ago after he won only three games in two-plus seasons as head coach. Lewis fired defensive coordinator Teryl Austin after a 51-14 loss to the Saints, installed himself as coordinator, and hired his close friend Jackson to help with the defense. The Browns were bothered by the sight of their former coach on the other sideline plotting against them. When safety Damarious Randall picked off one of Dalton’s passes along the sideline, he stepped out of bounds and handed the ball to Jackson , who patted him on the helmet.Dalton hurt the thumb on his passing hand while trying to recover a fumble in the third quarter and didn’t return. Center Billy Price snapped the ball too high, and Dalton got his hand caught in a scrum for the ball.“I’ve never done that,” Price said of his poor snap. “I just held onto it a little too much and just pulled it.”Dalton left the field immediately for testing. Lewis said the injury doesn’t appear to be season-ending Hardy Nickerson Jersey , but more tests were being performed. The Browns turned the fumble recovery into Mayfield’s fourth TD pass for a 35-7 lead. Dalton was 10 of 17 for 100 yards with a touchdown and an interception.Jeff Driskel took over and went 17 of 29 for 155 yards with a touchdown pass and a TD run. He’ll start against the Broncos next Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium if Dalton can’t play.“I know personally what I’ve known all along, and that’s that I can play at this level and give our team a chance to win,” Driskel said. The Bengals already were missing cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, receiver A.J. Green and left tackle Cordy Glenn, inactive with injuries. Jake Fisher started at left tackle and hurt his back late in the first half. Cornerback Tony McRae suffered a concussion in the third quarter and gave two thumbs-up as he was wheeled off the field. EDTShareTweetShareShareBengals held workout with Andre DillardJames Snook-USA TODAY SportsAs the NFL Draft is less than two weeks away http://www.thebengalslockerroom.com/authentic-shawn-williams-jersey , offensive tackle remains one of, if not the biggest need for the Bengals. You wouldn’t think it seeing how Cincinnati is paying over $15 million to Cordy Glenn and Bobby Hart in each of the next two seasons. But everyone knows they’re one of the worst starting tackle tandems in football, so if the Bengals believe there’s a franchise tackle on the board at No. 11, that may be the best pick to make for the future of this franchise.Turns out, the Bengals are looking into Washington State offensive tackle Andre Dillard, who worked out with the team. Dillard is an intriguing prospect, as he played in a pass-heavy Cougars offense that ranked dead last in rushing attempts last season. He also played in quick-pass offense that didn’t require him to take deep dropbacks like he’d do a lot more in the NFL. Still, Dillard was consistently a great tackle that did what was asked of him and helped lock down the left side. At worst Womens Dre Kirkpatrick Jersey , he’d be an upgrade over Bobby Hart on the right side, then could attempt to man the left side when Glenn’s contract runs out in two years. Dillard is a promising prospect, but the 11th pick is probably too high for him. A lot of mock drafts have him going in the 20s. Perhaps he’ll be someone the Bengals take a hard look at if they wind up trading down in Round 1.
After the Lions announced the deal for Rashaan Melvin A'Shawn Robinson Jersey White , the cornerback used social media to thank the Raiders organization and apologize for his play last season. It didn’t work out for Melvin in Oakland after he signed as a free agent last offsason. He made only seven starts, getting benched in favor of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. “I greatly appreciate the Oakland organization for giving me the opportunity to further my career this past season,” Melvin wrote. “I respect the Raiders organization; I respect the tradition; and I respect the die-hard fans that has and will forever believe in Raider Nation. I feel like I cheated the fans and organization and [the] long list of players that came before me that made the organization what it is. It was always a lifetime dream of mine to wear the silver and black. It really hurt me that I wasn’t able to be myself and play the style of play that I know I was capable of playing. To all my guys in that locker room, I appreciate you guys for making the year special through everything. I cherish the relationships that were created on and off the field. I respect you guys, and I wish you boys the best. Y’all ball out for the city of Oakland one more time or for however long y’all [are] there. Respect!”Melvin’s deal with the Lions is for one year and $3.5 million. He reunites with Lions head coach Matt Patricia, whom Melvin played for in New England.“I’m thankful for every opportunity God has placed in my life Womens DeShawn Shead Jersey ,” Melvin added on social media. “We all must go through some things to get to what is actually meant for us. Excited about this next step.” On Friday, Ryan Mathews broke down everything you need to know about what a potential Detroit Lions trade for Antonio Brown would look like—from how much in cap space it would cost the Lions for the next few years, to what he would do for Detroit’s roster, to the trade compensation it may require to get Brown.Obviously, there were a lot of heated comments on the story. As of writing this, there are 175 comments debating the merits of trading for Brown and how much you pay to get him in Detroit. Some are scared off completely by the drama happening in Pittsburgh and his age. Others see the top-tier talent and a rare opportunity to grab that and think it’s worth any potential risks. Others have debated the value of trading away future assets to get a guy like Brown. But I’d like to get some data on this Christian Jones Jersey , so today’s Question of the Day is:Would you be open to the Lions trading for Antonio Brown? My answer: Let’s be clear here, I’m talking about realistic trade options. If you’re only willing to give up a fourth-round pick to get Antonio Brown, you are not open to trading for him. Anyways, I am absolutely open to the idea of getting him. Normally, I’m not one to promote going for the hottest skill-position player on the market—I hated (and still hate) the idea of going for Le’Veon Bell—but this seems like one of the most rare opportunities the Lions have to get literally the best receiver in the league at a reasonable price. His cap hits would range from $12 to $15 million over the next three years, which is actually comparable to what many are expecting a guy like Golden Tate to get on market. Obviously the draft compensation is the biggest hurdle Womens Michael Roberts Jersey , but as I said on Twitter on Friday, I think I’d be willing to give up the Lions’ eighth overall pick for Brown. Some believe that would be enough. Others don’t. I just wouldn’t go any further than that. Brown is a premier talent that could help immediately turn around the Lions offense in a way that no other offseason addition could. And, yes, I think that could make the Lions instant competitors in the NFC North with another key addition or two. As for the drama, it’s certainly a concern, and it’s likely the reason Detroit doesn’t pursue this. We’ve seen how strict this coaching staff can be Da'Shawn Hand Jersey , and that’s not likely to mesh well with someone like Brown. That being said, I’d like to think a good coaching staff can handle all personalities, and Brown’s “toxic attitude” is being a little overplayed here. The man and the Steelers had been working in harmony for eight years prior to this, and I’m not going to discount the player after the relationship went sour. There are definitely risks, and I get the hesitation, but the talent is too good and the salary cap price is too reasonable for me to not at least make a somewhat reasonable offer to Pittsburgh. Your turn.
No matter what happens when Jimmy Garoppolo is healthy again and steps back in as starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers Solomon Thomas Jersey White , Nick Mullens has proven there's a place for him somewhere in the NFL.The former undrafted free agent out of Southern Mississippi who wasn't even deemed worthy enough to invite to the combine in 2017 has been one of the league's more prolific passers since getting his chance to play last month."He's shown he can play in this league," 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman said. "I hope we can keep him because teams need a quarterback. This guy's not just playing conservative football, oh man, get the ball in the right places. He's making the right decisions, he's making good throws under pressure. I'd say he's playing like a top half quarterback in this league. You have guys that are out there right now that are not playing better football than Nick Mullens. He could be a starter for a lot of teams in this football league and we appreciate that we have him and he's playing his tail off for us."Mullens has built on his record-setting debut against Oakland on Nov. 1, when he went 16 for 22 for 262 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions for a 151.9 passer rating that was the highest since the merger for a player in his debut with at least 20 attempts. He took a little step back the following two games in losses to the New York Giants and Tampa Bay before starting to show noticeable improvement in the second half of a 43-16 loss at Seattle earlier this month.Mullens followed that up by leading the Niners (4-10) to wins over Denver and Seattle to provide a rare bright spot in an otherwise down season for San Francisco."I try to get better every week," Mullens said. "That's definitely the goal. What you do in the past doesn't matter. It's all about what you do today and the next day and the future. It's definitely a goal of mine to get better every single day. Feel more comfortable out there. Obviously, experience helps. You could say the experience helps and I feel more comfortable. I'm just enjoying playing."Since taking over as starter, the player once considered too small and with an arm not strong enough for the NFL ranks third in the league in yards per attempt (8.6) and sixth in yards passing per game (292.3).He fared well against Seattle's strong defense in a 26-23 overtime win on Sunday, completing 20 of 29 passes for 275 yards and one touchdown despite a couple of key drops that prevented him from having even bigger numbers."Nick's played very well and he's gotten better as he's gone," coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. "I thought yesterday was probably Nick's best game Womens C. J. Beathard Jersey , especially the way he finished it in that fourth quarter."Mullens got his chance when C.J. Beathard was hurt heading into the Raiders game but now has put up better numbers than Garoppolo did in eight starts for San Francisco the past two years before a season-ending knee injury in Week 3.While Garoppolo will no doubt be the starter next season with his $137.5 million contract, Mullens has made his case to be the No. 2 even though Beathard was a fourth-round pick the year Mullens entered as an undrafted player."I think I can play in the league, that's for sure. I believe that," Mullens said. "But, as far as the extra stuff goes, I don't really worry too much about it."Mullens' teammates saw signs that he could perform on the big stage before he even got his chance. He led some late comebacks in exhibition games and had a relentless work ethic and attention to detail that he even practiced calling out plays at home with crowd noise blaring through his ear phones. He also took young receivers under his wing, making sure they knew the offense as well as he did even before he was playing."You talk about a young kid who's come in here, learned the offense, was on the practice squad all of last year. He's teaching the young receivers in his class the playbook," kicker Robbie Gould said. "He's really a coach. The kid has such an incredible story. He finally gets his chance about a year and a half later and he's really taken the reins. He's a true leader. You cheer for guys like Nick Mullens."NOTES: CB Ahkello Witherspoon will go on IR with a sprained PCL in his right knee. ... S Jaquiski Tartt has a stinger and his status for this week is up in the air. When it comes to the confidential settlement reached by and between the NFL, Colin Kaepernick, and Eric Reid Womens Kyle Juszczyk Jersey , no one is saying anything. About anything.Beyond the announcements issued by the parties on Friday, the terms of which no doubt were written carefully, reviewed painstakingly, and approved warily, nothing else has been or will be provided, at least not anytime soon. Here’s one angle that, given the standard approach to settlement agreements, likely requires no confirmation from either side: Any potential grievance or other legal claim arising from Reid’s suspicion that he was targeted for PED testing in retaliation for his collusion claim most likely were waived as part of the resolution. Most settlement agreements include broad, sweeping language releasing the party writing the check from any and all liability, with broad and repetitive language aimed at encompassing all claims that were made and that could have been made, typically including a description of the period encompassed as “from the beginning of time to the date of this agreement.”But prospective waivers of liability can’t happen. If Reid believes that he’s being singled out for PED testing or substance-abuse testing or fines for on-field hits, he could (in theory) argue that the league is retaliating against him. It’s nevertheless possible that http://www.49erslockerroom.com/authentic-c.-j.-beathard-jersey , as part of his settlement documents, Reid has signed an acknowledgement that he currently has no evidence of foul play as it relates to past PED testing and that all testing, fines, etc. were on the up and up. It’s not an absolute protection against future entanglements, but it becomes the best way to wipe the slate clean. The settlement agreement also could (and probably should) include an agreement pursuant to which Reid will make no allegations of retaliation absent evidence of retaliation, and that if he believes he’s the victim of retaliation he will say nothing about it publicly unless and until he files a formal grievance.Regardless of the specific language used, it’s likely the last we’ll hear of Reid thinking he’s been targeted for PED tests. If we do, it will mean either that Reid is violating his agreement or that the NFL’s lawyers didn’t do a very good job of drafting it.
One of the key plays in the Titans’ comeback win over the Eagles on Sunday was a strip-sack of Philadelphia quarterback Carson Wentz Womens Will Compton Jersey , but the former head of NFL officiating Dean Blandino says that play should have been called back because of a blow to Wentz’s head. With the Eagles leading 17-10 in the fourth quarter, Titans rookie Harold Landry hit Wentz as Wentz was trying to pass, knocking the ball loose. The Titans recovered the fumble. But Blandino says Landry’s hit was to Wentz’s helmet and should have been a penalty.“Yes that鈥檚 a foul,” Blandino wrote on Twitter. “Forcible contact to the head while QB is in passing posture.”For NFL fans, one of the frustrations with the stricter enforcement of roughing the passer this season has been the inconsistency of it. The officials called fewer roughing the passer penalties in Week Four, but in this case it appears that the officials failed to make a call they should have made, and that was costly for the Eagles. Fresh off of what could have been a season-saving win over the Cowboys, the Titans are rewarded with the New England Patriots. After a short down period to start the year Steve McNair Jersey White , New England is rolling once again, looking like a top threat once again to threaten for a championship. Now 7-2, the Patriots have won their last six games. Up next for them is a trip to Nashville, where they will be met with several familiar faces. Former Patriot Mike Vrabel is now running the show for the Titans, while former Patriots executive Jon Robinson is the general manager. Former Patriots like Logan Ryan, Malcolm Butler, Josh Kline and Dion Lewis are now each key pieces for the Titans. This game isn’t short on storylines, but can the Titans actually hang with Tom Brady and company? It’s a matchup that features New England’s fourth ranked offense against Tennessee first ranked defense http://www.thetitanslockerroom.com/authentic-derrick-henry-jersey , in terms of overall scoring. Vegas has placed the Patriots as 6.5 point favorites against the Titans, honestly a little lower than I thought it would be. Tennessee hasn’t beaten New England since 2002. The two haven’t even played a truly competitive game since 2004. The obvious key here will be Tennessee’s offense. Can they continue to build on what we saw on Monday night in Dallas? Is Marcus Mariota finally fully healthy? If so, will we get the Mariota we saw in Dallas again? These are all legitimate questions that we don’t know the answer to. Quite frankly, this team has given us no reason from a consistency standpoint to believe that the Monday night performance will be the new normal. For now, it’s hard to pick against the Patriots in this spot. They’ve yet to score under 25 points in a game this season, so it’s unrealistic to think that the Titans’ defense will be able to shoulder the load on Sunday. Matt LaFleur’s offense is going to have to keep pace with Brady, which is usually a nearly impossible task — especially when you consider how inconsistent this group has been so far in 2018.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be returning home this weekend to face the Washington Redskins at Raymond James Stadium. It will only be the fourth home game of the season for Tampa Bay Lavonte David Jersey White , who currently have a 2-1 record at home. With the Buccaneers currently sitting at 3-5 on the season, the team realistically needs to go 7-1 the remainder of the way to give themselves a shot at the playoffs, so it’s safe to say that every game is a must-win for this football team. The Washington Redskins are coming into Tampa with a 5-3 record, and currently lead the NFC East by one game over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Redskins just got beat badly at home b the Atlanta Falcons so there is no doubt that they will be looking to bounce back. Sunday’s matchup will be the 23rd time these two teams have squared off and through the first 22 games, things have been pretty much dead even between these two franchises. Below are some important stats to keep in mind as Sunday approaches. Overall series record: Tampa Bay has gone 11-11 against Washington. Last Matchup: Redskins beat the Buccaneers 31-30 in what is known as the “you like that game”Last five matchups: Buccaneers are 2-3 in the last five against WashingtonBucs record at home vs the Redskins: 7-5.Overall scoring comparison: Tampa Bay Buccaneers have scored 425 points, while Washington has scored 395 points. As a team, the 2018 Tampa Bay Buccaneers were a major disappointment. The season started with back-to-back wins over the Saints and Eagles, but things quickly went downhill from there. By the end of week 17, the Bucs were 5-11 and in possession of the No. 5 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Head coach Dirk Koetter was fired after three seasons, giving way to a pretty quick coaching search that culminated with the hiring of two-time NFL Coach of the Year Bruce Arians. In addition to getting his staff to fix one of the worst defenses in the NFL, Arians will be tasked with continuing the development of Jameis Winston and the rest of the talented Tampa Bay offense. He should feel good about the existing personnel, at least at the “skill” positions. The 2018 version of the Buccaneer offense set franchise records for total yards and passing yards while averaging 24.8 points per game (12th in the NFL). Some guys on the offense saw improvements in their numbers when compared to career averages, while others took dips or showed some inconsistencies. Let’s look at the player breakdowns.QB Jameis WinstonCareer Averages (2015-2017): 313-for-515 (60.8 percent), 3,879 passing yards, 23 passing touchdowns, 15 interceptions, 10 fumbles (5 lost)... 47 rushes, 171 yards, 3.6 yards per carry, 3 touchdowns2018 Stats: 244-for-378 (64.6 percent), 2,992 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, 14 interceptions, 7 fumbles (3 lost)... 49 rushes, 281 yards, 5.7 yards per carry, 1 touchdownThoughts: Considering his career averages before 2018 were affected by the three games he missed in 2017 and his stats this year were impacted by the five games he missed, there’s some unevenness in comparisons. Despite that, there’s still some notable improvements and trends here. His completion percentage in 2018 was a career-best, ending up almost four full percentage points higher than his career average. The fact that his touchdown total was near his career average even with the five missed games is significant, but so is the fact that his interception total came close to matching up. He cut down on his fumbles a bit, though the missed time could be part of the reason for that. As far as his rushing stats are concerned, he was much more effective as a runner in 2018 than he had been in the past. Overall, 2018 Jameis Winston felt a lot like 2015-2017 Jameis Winston, only with more efficiency as a passer and stronger running abilities.RB Peyton BarberCareer Averages (2016-2017): 82 carries, 323 yards (3.9 yards per carry), 2 rushing touchdowns... 11 catches on 13 targets, 71 yards (6.5 yards per catch), 0 touchdowns2018 Stats: 234 carries, 871 yards (3.7 yards per carry), 5 rushing touchdowns... 20 catches on 29 targets, 92 yards (4.6 yards per catch), 1 touchdownThoughts: Barber handled his increased workload very well in 2018. Considering the circumstances, he performed about as well as anyone could have hoped heading into the year. The offensive line was inconsistent, there was no help from any other backs and the offensive scheme itself was geared more toward the passing game than anything else. Barber never got more than 19 carries in a game, but with the carries he did get, he ran hard and fought for yards even when his offensive linemen didn’t open holes for him. The obvious takeaway in the stat comparison is the major difference in carries, as he became a No. 1 back for the first time in his NFL career. With those carries came increased production, even if his yards per carry dipped a tiny bit. Overall, 2018 was a successful year for Barber, one that should make this offseason pretty interesting for both his future and the future of the Tampa Bay backfield.WR Mike EvansCareer Averages (2014-2017): 77 catches on 145 targets, 1,145 yards (14.8 yards per catch), 8 touchdowns2018 Stats: 86 catches on 139 targets, 1,524 yards (17.7 yards per catch), 8 touchdownsThoughts: Evans was undoubtedly Tampa Bay’s offensive MVP this year, setting new franchise records left and right. He improved on his career averages in nearly every category, further proving his case to be considered a top-five receiver in the league. Where he saw the largest jump was in yards per catch, beating his career average by almost three full yards. Entering the season, Evans felt like a guy that couldn’t possibly elevate any more due to how high of a level he had performed at in the first four seasons of his career. He proved that thought to be wholly wrong Womens Bryan Anger Jersey , providing the Bucs with a No. 1 receiver that defenses had to account for. When they focused so much attention on him, it certainly opened up opportunities for the other highly-talented pass-catchers that the team has on its roster. There’s no point in doubting Evans’ ability to elevate his game once again in 2019. He has proven by now that he can find ways to improve year in and year out.WR DeSean JacksonCareer Averages (2008-2017): 55 catches on 98 targets, 949 yards (17.3 yards per catch), 5 touchdowns2018 Stats: 41 catches on 74 targets, 774 yards (18.9 yards per catch), 4 touchdownsThoughts: It’s not surprising that Jackson’s numbers trended downward in 2018. He didn’t exactly live up to his standard of play in 2017 either, putting up the second-lowest yardage total of his career (the lowest came in 2015, when he played just 10 games). So, compared to 2017, Jackson blew by his yardage and yards per catch numbers. He also finished with one more touchdown. But compared to what he has averaged in his career, Jackson’s 2018 was another letdown. He had some chemistry with Ryan Fitzpatrick and virtually none with Jameis Winston, then an injury sidelined him for a few games. With his time in Tampa seemingly over, it’s fairly safe to say that his legacy with the organization will be looked at as a disappointing one.WR Chris Godwin2017 Stats: 34 catches on 56 targets, 525 yards (15.4 yards per catch), 1 touchdown2018 Stats: 59 catches on 95 targets, 842 yards (14.3 yards per catch), 7 touchdownsThoughts: While Jackson struggled, Godwin often reaped the benefits. The 2017 third-round pick has proven to be a steal in his first two years in the league, setting himself up for a bright future as Tampa Bay’s No. 2 receiver. With expanded opportunities this year, the Penn State alum shined. He saw an increase in targets, which led to a major increase in catches. Without a couple of down games toward the end of the year, he may have been a threat to break the 1,000-yard mark. Even still, he ended up with 842 yards and while he saw a slight decrease in yards per catch, he found the end zone six more times than he did as a rookie. There’s a ton of momentum for Godwin to build on this offseason as he heads into year three in the league.WR Adam HumphriesCareer Averages (2015-2017): 48 catches on 69 targets, 504 yards (10.6 yards per catch), 1 touchdown2018 Stats: 76 catches on 105 targets, 816 yards (10.7 yards per catch), 5 touchdownsThoughts: Humphries has long been an underrated part of the Buccaneer offense, but it felt like 2018 was a breakout year for the former undrafted free agent. His role stayed somewhat the same this year, though it was turned up a bit. He had career-highs in targets, catches, yards and touchdowns. His yards per catch average stayed consistent, which reflected his role a key guy in situations that called for short-to-intermediate passes. Humphries’ value is at an all-time high, which makes this offseason intriguing for him personally. The Bucs would be smart to bring him back, but there will definitely be interest elsewhere. His connection with Jameis Winston is a strong one, so it really should be a priority for Tampa Bay to keep him around.TE Cameron BrateCareer Averages (2014-2017): 32 catches on 47 targets, 389 yards (12.1 yards per catch), 4 touchdowns2018 Stats: 30 catches on 49 targets, 289 yards (9.6 yards per catch), 6 touchdownsThoughts: Surprisingly, Brate kind of got lost in the shuffle this year. From earning a contract extension in the offseason to being on one of the four player murals outside of Raymond James Stadium this year, it seemed like he would be a major part of Tampa Bay’s future. Now, there are questions as to whether or not he’ll even be around for 2019. His averages for catches and targets match up to his 2018 totals on the surface, but those averages for his career do include a 2014 season that saw him finish with one catch on one target. The fact of the matter is, Brate saw numbers go down everywhere except targets and touchdowns. That’s not to say he’s not a good player or that he performed poorly this year. It seemed more like he just didn’t factor into the team’s plans as much as he did in 2016 and 2017. One thing did stay consistent though, as he remained one of the offense’s top targets in the red zone.TE O.J. Howard2017 Stats: 26 catches on 39 targets, 432 yards (16.6 yards per catch), 6 touchdowns2018 Stats: 34 catches on 48 targets, 565 yards (16.6 yards per catch), 5 touchdownsThoughts: Howard was impressive as a rookie, but he was well on his way to crushing the numbers he put up in year one before he suffered a season-ending injury. He only played in 10 games this season, but still beat his rookie numbers in every category except touchdowns. It’s almost a sure thing that he would’ve passed the six scores he had in 2017 if he was healthy all year, but his season came to an unfortunate end with more than a month left to play. Regardless, 2018 saw Howard’s development continue in a big way. He remained a big-play threat, matching his yards per catch average of 16.6, and ended up more than halfway to 1,000 yards despite missing the final six games of the season. By now, it’s been made clear that Howard, if he can stay healthy, will be a major force for the Bucs for years to come.
