LONDON -- As first-round losses go, this one was easier to take for Vasek Pospisil. Babe Parilli Jersey . Playing at Wimbledon on his 24th birthday, the Vancouver player saved three match points before falling to Robin Haase 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Monday. Despite his loss, Pospisil was more than satisfied that the back pains which had made his life hell for the past six months have been fixed thanks to a diagnosis by a Prague doctor after months of uncertainty. Pain-free over the last two weeks, Pospisil said he now knows exactly what was bothering him and that the problem has become "completely manageable." Pospisil came to the All England Club after reaching the quarter-finals on grass last week in the Netherlands in his best career performance on the surface. "This was the first match of the year which felt normal," said the player who began to be bothered by his back in Chennai in early January. "Last week was the first week of the season in which I recognized myself on court in terms of competing. "I played quite well last week and today I just had a couple of mistakes and it didnt work out. "But this was definitely a normal match. Now I can focus on what I need to work on. Not playing much probably cost me today. My main goal now is to stay healthy and finally be able to work on improving my game." On the womens side, Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., was also eliminated, losing 6-1, 6-2 to Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia. The No. 31 seed was beaten in a battle lasting one hour 38 minutes to leave his Wimbledon main draw record at a 2013 win and two defeats. Pospisil hammered over 21 aces against Haase and produced 58 winners to 44 for his opponent, but he converted on only one of five break points. The Canadian dropped the opening set in a tiebreaker and levelled by winning the second before Haase took the lead two sets to one as he broke in the final game of the third. Haase earned another break for a 3-1 lead in the fourth set but was unable to close it out immediately as Pospisil salvaged three match points in the ninth game. But a cross-court forehand winner gave Haase one more winning chance, which he took when Pospisils volley went low into the net. Pospisil and Haase and split two meetings last season with a win apiece. Pospisil was one of three Canadian men in the singles draw, where eighth seed Milos Ranoic of Thornhill, Ont., heads the effort. Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., earned a lucky loser spot in the 128-man draw. Jim Lee Hunt Jersey . Darren Collison and Blake Griffin scored 23 points apiece and the Clippers beat the Suns 112-108 Wednesday night, their fourth win in a row and 17th in the last 19 games. Terry Kirby Jersey . Begg-Smith was born in Canada but has competed for Australia since 2001. He won gold in Turin in 2006 then took the silver medal behind Alex Bilodeau four years ago in Vancouver. He took several years off following the last Olympics, but resumed his career in time for Sochi. His opening run wasnt good enough to crack the Top 10 and advance to the semifinal, but he got another chance in the second qualifier. After a hard crash in that attempt, he failed to qualify. That brings an end to his last stab to return to the sport he once dominated. "It was a desperate move to come back this year," he said inn the finish area, a rueful smile on his face. Steve Nelson Jersey. "I was looking for a miraculous performance." Begg-Smith posted a fifth place showing in his first event back this year, but the rest of his results were consistently mediocre. On Monday night, his three years away from competition showed. "I just wasnt feeling it tonight," he said about his run. "The snow was soft and I havent skied on soft snow for four years. I wasnt feeling it, I just got a little bit off." Asked directly if he would ski in the world cup again, he replied simply, "no." As for his future plans, he smiled again: "Im an international man of mystery. Im going to keep you guys guessing." (With files from the Olympic News Service) ' ' '
SEATTLE -- Clay Buchholz will make his return to the Boston Red Sox rotation in Wednesdays series finale against Seattle. Ozzie Albies Jersey . The Red Sox announced Tuesday that Buchholz would get the start instead of Felix Doubront, who will pitch out of the bullpen in the short-term. He will likely be worked back into the rotation when the Red Sox return home next week against the Chicago Cubs, manager John Farrell said. Buchholz has not pitched since hyperextending his left knee in late May. Buchholz is 2-4 with a 7.02 ERA in 10 starts. The Red Sox will make a corresponding roster move to activate Buchholz on Wednesday. Boston also got back pitcher Brandon Workman from his six-game suspension on Tuesday. He threw a simulated game and Farrell said the tentative plans are for Workman to start on Friday in New York against the Yankees. GENEVA -- Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic warmed up for their World Cup playoffs meeting with high-scoring displays for Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday. Ronaldos two goals lifted Madrid to a 2-1 home victory over Juventus in the marquee matchup of the day, although the Portugal star was topped by Swedens talismanic forward. Ibrahimovic struck four goals -- including an unstoppable long-range strike -- as PSG outclassed Anderlecht 5-0 in Brussels. "Score a goal like this, it is good for the memory," Ibrahimovic said of his third goal, which was applauded by the 25,000 Anderlecht fans. He returned the applause to each corner in turn. "It was a big honour for me." Defending champion Bayern Munich routed Viktoria Plzen 5-0, with Franck Ribery scoring twice, and Bayer Leverkusen won 4-0 against Shakhtar Donetsk. Madrid, PSG and Bayern all lead their groups with three straight wins, and Manchester United heads Leverkusen by a point after edging Real Sociedad 1-0. Manchester City also won, 2-1 at CSKA Moscow, though the main talking point was racist abuse targeted by Russian fans at Citys black players and reported by Citys Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure. The incident happened during a week-long UEFA campaign to highlight its fight against racism and CSKA faces a partial stadium closure for a future home match. Galatasaray beat Copenhagen 3-1, with Wesley Sneijder and Dider Drogba adding to Wednesdays star-studded list of scorers, while Benfica levelled late in a 1-1 draw with Olympiakos. Three weeks ahead of their scheduled first-leg clash in the Portugal vs. Sweden playoff, Ronaldo now leads Ibrahimovic 7-6 atop the Champions League scoring table after just three matches. Ronaldo took only four minutes to strike against Juventus, rounding goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to score from a tight angle after taking a clever reverse pass from Angel Di Maria. Juventus was level in the 22nd when Spanish forward Fernando Llorente pounced on a loose ball after Iker Casillas dived low to push out Paul Pogbas far-post header. Ronaldo got the winning goal in the 29th from the penalty spot after Giorgio Chiellini wrestled Sergi Ramos to the ground as a free-kick cross came inn. Brian McCann Jersey. Chiellini was red-carded in the 48th when he raced alongside Ronaldo and caught the Madrid forwards face with a raised arm. Ibrahimovic fell one goal short of Lionel Messis Champions League record of five in a match, yet was no less memorable. A 17th minute tap-in was followed by a nonchalant back-heel in the 22nd, a long-range screamer in the 36th and a dipping volley in the 62nd. The French champions fourth was scored by Uruguay star Edinson Cavani who, not for the first time this season, was somewhat left in the shadows. Bayern outgunned Plzen, as expected, with 35 efforts on goal to none by the Czech champion. "We played well but Plzen didnt make it hard," Bayern winger Arjen Robben said. Ribery opening the scoring from the penalty spot. David Alaba made it 2-0 at the break, and a second-half stroll was completed by Ribery, Bastian Schweinsteiger and substitute Mario Goetze. Man City was frustrated soon after arriving in Moscow by the poor condition of the green-painted pitch, and left angered by home fans treatment of its black players. "For me as an African player it is always sad to hear something like that and we need to do something about it," said Toure, who said he informed referee Ovidiu Hategan of the abuse during the match. Sergio Aguero eased the visitors mood with two goals in the first half, carrying City clear of CSKA into second place behind Bayern. Manchester United took just 69 seconds to score against Sociedad, when Inigo Martinez clumsily booted the ball into his own net after a shot by Wayne Rooney came back off the post United created ample chances to extend their lead, though the Spanish visitors struck the frame of David De Geas goal in both halves. Stefan Kiessling scored two valid goals for Leverkusen in his first game since being credited with an infamous ghost goal through the side netting in a Bundesliga match. Simon Rolfes, with a penalty early in the second half, and Sidney Sam also scored. After Olympiakos led Benfica in the 29th from Alejandro Dominguezs goal, a heavy rainstorm made the pitch almost unplayable in the Stadium of Light in Lisbon which hosts the final next May. Oscar Cardozo equalized in the 83rd in a goalmouth scramble. ' ' '
EAST RUTHERFORD, N. Detroit Red Wings Shirts .J. -- New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his left knee. Cruz had an arthroscopic debridement of the knee Thursday afternoon in Pensacola, Fla. after getting a second opinion on the injury he sustained last weekend against Seattle. The surgery is similar to the one former Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora had before the 2011 season. The recovery period is at least three weeks. The Giants (5-9) have two games left in the regular season. The team listed him as out for the Lions game in Detroit on Sunday and spokesman Pat Hanlon said he would not play in the season finale against Washington on Dec. 29 Cruz was injured Sunday in the third quarter of the Giants 23-0 loss to the Seahawks. He jumped to catch a pass and landed hard on his head. After he walked off the field, the Giants said he sustained a concussion and injured his knee. Cruz was cleared of the concussion Wednesday. The knee injury was more serious. Cruz, who signed a $43 million contract this summer, had a team-high 73 catches for 998 yards and four touchdowns this season. He was 2 yards short of his third straight 1,000-yard season. Offensive co-ordinator Kevin Gilbride said last week that this might have been Cruzs best season because the former free agent drew double-team coverage all season. He also noted that the Paterson native has also had his best year blocking. "Theres no question that we havent been as effective in some of the other spots and, therefore, people gear up defensively," Gilbride said. "Theyre certainly very cognizant of where he is at all times. Sometimes we call it funnel coverage, where everybody is man-to-man and then there is a zone player in there. Usually that zone player is looking to see where Victor is and then weve gotten a lot more doubles." Gilbride said it reminds him of the attention that Steve Smith and Plaxico Burress got in their primes. Signed as a free agent out of Massachusetts, Cruz catapulted into stardom in 2011, catching 82 passes for a team-record 1,536 yards and nine touchdowns. He became a fan favourite with his salsa dance after each touchdown. Cruz caught 86 passes for 1,092 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. He was selected to the Pro Bowl for the first time. If there has been any disappointment for Cruz the past two seasons, its been missing the playoffs. "I am about the team," Cruz said last week. PHOENIX -- Mirim Lee is just getting started on the LPGA Tour -- and isnt taking baby steps. Joe Montana Super Bowl Jersey . Neither is 16-year-old Lydia Ko. Lee shot a 5-under 67 on Friday in the JTBC Founders Cup to take a two-stroke lead over Ko into the weekend. The 23-year-old South Korean played the final eight holes in 5 under, making an eagle and three birdies to reach 13-under 131 at Desert Ridges Wildfire Golf Club. "I played a little boring on the front nine, so I went more aggressive on the back nine and it worked well," Lee said. "So, now I plan on being aggressive the rest of the week." Ko, the Canadian Womens Open winner as an amateur the last two years, shot 66. The first-year pro played a late six-hole stretch in 6 under with an eagle and four birdies. "I just gave myself more opportunities on the back nine," Ko said. Lee is making her third start in her rookie season on the LPGA Tour after winning three times on the Korean LPGA. In her first two events, she tied for 33rd in the Bahamas and tied for 25th in the Womens Australian Open. "I feel more comfortable because here the fairways are bigger," Lee said. "My driver shots play better here." She holed a 35-foot birdie putt on the par-4 13th, saved par on the par-3 14th with a 20-footer, and hit a hybrid from 220 yards to 12 feet to set up the eagle on the par-5 15th. "All this week, hybrids have not worked for me, so I felt very fortunate," Lee said. She also birdied the par-4 18th, hitting a 9-iron to 2 feet. Born in South Korea and raised in New Zealand, Ko won the Swinging Skirts World Ladies Masters in December in Thailand in her second start after turning pro in October. She has five victories in professional events, also winning in Australia and New Zealand. Ko began her back-nine run with birdies on Nos. 12 and 13, eagled the 15th and birdied Nos. 16 and 17. After going hungry on the course in the first round, she stocked up Friday. "I had a protein bar and like a protein jelly and theres always a peanut butter sandwich in there," Ko said. "I actually noticed that it was in my bag yesterday, but I didnt find it, so it was actually more done." Sun Young Yoo was third at 10 under after a bogey-free 65, matching the best round of the day. The 2012 Kraft Nabisco winner played the back nine in 5-under 31. "I was more patient today," Yoo said. "Overall, everything was working very well." Top-ranked Inbee Park was 9 under along with Bahamas winner Jessica Korda, Chella Choi and So Yeon Ryu. Park, playing alongside Ko and Korda, also eagled No. 15 in her 69. "I left a lot of putts out there," Park said. Korda and Choi shot 66, and Ryu had a 67. Michelle Wie topped the group at 8 under, following her opening 66 with a 70. She had four straight birdies in the middle of the round to take the lead at 10 under, then bogeyed the par-5 fifth -- her 14th hole of the day -- after hitting over the green from a greenside bunker. "I thought I hit a really good bunker shot and I flew it 15 yards past the green," Wie said. "So, that was a good one. ... It went over everyones head." She also dropped a stroke on the par-4 ninth. "All day today I just felt like I could have shot a lot more under par," Wie said. Defending champion Stacy Lewis, 2011 winner Karrie Webb, and Morgan Pressel were 7 under. Lewis and Webb shot 71, and Pressel followed her opening 65 with a 72. After playing the first 11 holes Thursday in 9 under, Pressel was 2 over on the next 25. DIVOTS: Yani Tseng, the 2012 winner, missed the cut with rounds of 71 and 74. The 15-time tour champion is winless in 46 events since the 2012 Kia Classic, a week after her Founders Cup victory. New York, NY (SportsNetwork. Bryant Young Jersey .com) - Despite missing 25 games, reigning MVP Kevin Durant was selected to the All-Star Game Thursday as a reserve, while Kings center DeMarcus Cousins and Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard were among the players snubbed. Durant, who was named MVP of the 2012 All-Star Game and will be appearing in it for the sixth straight time, has only played in 21 of Oklahoma Citys 46 games while dealing with foot and toe injuries. There are plenty of familiar faces among the Western Conference reserves, including Durants teammate Russell Westbrook, Rockets MVP candidate and NBA scoring leader James Harden and Clippers point guard Chris Paul. Warriors sharpshooter Klay Thompson will be making his first appearance. Spurs big man and future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan will be making his 15th appearance in the All-Star Game, tying him with Kevin Garnett and Shaquille ONeal for third-most all-time. Portland power forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who has put off thumb surgery, rounds out the West roster. Harden is expected to move into the starting lineup in place of injured Lakers star Kobe Bryant, who is sidelined for the rest of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery. Lillard, Cousins and Grizzlies guard Mike Conley are among the potential replacements on the roster. There were few, if any, surprises among the Eastern Conference reserves, with the conference-leading Hawks placing three players in the game for the first time since 1980. Point guard Jeff Teague made his first All-Star game, forward Paul Millsap his second and center Al Horford will represent the East for the third time. Miami will be well-represented as well, with veterans Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh earning their 11th and 10th consecutive trips, respectively. Clevelands Kyrie Irving and Chicagos Jimmy Butler round out the roster. Irving, the reigning All-Star Game MVP, will play in the game for a third consecutive year, while Butler is set to make his first appearance. The Western Conference starters as voted by fans were Bryant, Golden States Stephen Curry, New Orleans Anthony Davis, Memphis Marc Gasol and Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers. New Yorks Carmelo Anthony, Chicagos Pau Gasol, Clevelands LeBron James, Torontos Kyle Lowry and Washingtons John Wall were voted as starters for the Eastern Conference. Kimbrel entered the game with two outs and a runner at first in the eighth inning and got his former Atlanta teammate Martin Prado looking to end the inning. With a three-run lead in the ninth, Kimbrel got Aaron Hill and David Peralta to fly out, then Tuffy Gosewich popped out to end it. It was just his third career four-out save. "He hadnt pitched since last Saturday," manager Fredi Gonzalez said, "so we were able to do that." The Braves broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh when, with oone out, Heyward drew the only walk McCarthy allowed. Kevin Greene Jersey. Simmons lashed a double to the corner in left, scoring Heyward from first. The Atlanta leadoff hitter used his long arms to connect with a ball that was high and outside and drove it to the opposite field. "It was a pitch I dont expect to get hit at all," McCarthy said. "It was right where I wanted it. It was a hard four-seamer up and away and I wanted to use it to establish something else. He took a good swing at it and hit a home run. I was pretty surprised." They added another run in the ninth on Heywards RBI single. Right fielder Gerardo Parra robbed Simmons of an extra-base hit and probably saved a run with a diving grab in the ninth. Atlanta took the lead in the fifth when Jordan Schafer doubled over third base to start the inning. He scored on Heywards home run to left that made it 2-1. Gregorius, called up from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday, opened the game with a shot just over the fence in right. Teheran didnt allow another hit until Peralta, another recent arrival from the minors, led off the fifth with a ground-rule double. Teheran retired the next two batters, but McCarthy -- 2 for 23 for the season to that point -- slapped a single between shortstop and third to bring Peralta home and tie it 2-2. Ex-Diamondback Justin Upton, greeted with a mix of boos and cheers, struck out three times against McCarthy, then flied out to the fence in right and drove in a run with a bloop single in the ninth. Among the bigger movers this week, the Los Angeles Clippers, 10-3 since Chris Paul was injured, have returned to the Top 10, going from 11 to seven. The Chicago Bulls are playing a similar tune, if not quite as impressively, without their star point guard, Derrick Rose. An 11-4 record in the past 15 games sees the Bulls reach 13, up from 16 a week ago. There is a decided level of mediocrity in the game of the Charlotte Bobcats, but they are 5-4 in the past nine games and have gone from 23 to 19 this week. A three-game winning streak helped the New Orleans Pelicans move from 25 to 21. Heading the wrong way, the San Antonio Spurs continue to get ravaged by injuries -- Manu Ginobili is the latest -- and theyve dropped from seven to 10. Injuries also leave the Atlanta Hawks short up front, and they fell from 12 to 15. How can we tweak the system to make it less likely that teams are rewarded for losing records? Having pulled a summer-long strop, hes recovered from an injury suffered at the start of the pre-season but also got injured again from a bizarre training ground collision that blew a significant divot in his re-thatched hair style. Now back on the team, Rooney wears a type of headwear which likely wouldnt have been permissible if the Quebec Soccer Federation oversaw the BPL. He has returned to his high-performing rugged self, potting scorchers seemingly for fun. All of this combined, its safe to say Wayne Rooney has dominated the headlines so far this season like no other Manchester United player in recent memory. Or just like George Best used to do after every operatic performance which occurred each Old Trafford Saturday afternoon back in them halcyon days of the 1970s. No, this is not an exercise in pole-vaulting Wayne Rooney into the exalted George Best-type comparisons - they simply dont exist. Well, not in the strictest of senses. Both did hone their crafts on the streets of the inner city neighbourhoods they hailed from. And as Rooney has threatened to walk out, Best actually did - and on more than one occasion. Then of course, their off the pitch extra-curricular activities do cross paths. Renowned for his marginal propensity to consume booze, Best graced a football pitch like no one before or after as he glided right on through the mistimed challenges of so very many of his opponents. Stand up Ron Chopper Harris and Norman Bite Yer Legs Hunter, especially. These challenges were not ever aimed at the ball, but the Belfast Boys ankles. Best was required to be more ballerina than a Rudolph Nureyev in his prime. Ahead of Saturday afternoons West Brom game, the last time the BPL champs were at home for a league game was a fortnight ago - a 2-0 victory against newly-promoted Crystal Palace. The three points were certainly welcomed by the 75,000-plus Manchester United faithful who had gathered at Old Trafford. Moreover, Sept. 14 was a highly poignant day for the elder generation especially. Exactly 50 years ago to the day, George Best made his Manchester United debut - a mere strap of a lad, just 17 years of age. This regal-type occasion was certainly not lost on Rooney as along with his teammates prior to the kick off against Palace, witnessed an homage to Best. As a personal encore, Rooney - very fittingly - scored Uniteds second goal. Best had been discovered by United scout Bob Bishop, who recommended the 16-year-old to United manager Matt Busby. There was no lengthy dossier required and power point presentations were two generations away. All it took to convince Busby was a mere seven (a fitting number, no?) words. I think Ive found you a genius, the telegram stated. Bishop wasnt exaggerating. Best eventually would go on to make close to 500 competitive appearances for United. In his sophomore season, the club captured their first title since the 1958 Munich air tragedy that decimated the club. Just a few short seasons later, Best followed that up in the showpiece 1968 European Cup Final played at Wembley Stadium. With a brilliant individuaal effort, Best scored the games winning goal and United secured English footballs very first European title. Bart Starr Super Bowl Jersey. Later that year, Best was anointed European Footballer of the Year. As Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo captivate their audiences today, Best enthralled and entertained like no one else. Now 50 years on, he still very much reigns supreme in the hearts and minds of all United supporters. The Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) – who speaks for hundreds of thousands of the clubs most dedicated supporters - were in the news earlier in the week as they successfully saw off any legal attempt to reverse the recent decision granted by the local Manchester council to deem Old Trafford a protected Community Asset. And MUST Vice Chairman Sean Bones counts amongst those fortunate enough to watch Best in his prime. Boness fondest recollection came during a game against that team who delivered Englands only World Cup triumph in 1966 - West Ham United Football Club. "One of the games I always remember was in the 1971/72 season when George scored a fabulous hat trick against West Ham at Old Trafford," Bones told TSN.ca by email. "George always created huge excitement and expectation when the ball arrived at his feet. In that game he was completely unplayable, even the great Bobby Moore couldnt get close enough to him to put in a tackle."Even as Jan. 4 of next year signifies the 40th anniversary of Best hanging his boots up on United, his legendary status still shines as beacon bright as it did in those swinging 1960s. "George Best means everything to Manchester United supporters," said Jones. "He was a pure genius on the football field - to see him play was literally like watching poetry in motion." As Rooney was seemingly agitated for a move all summer long (with United pushing back two official offers from Chelsea shortly after the transfer window slammed shut) and with a virtuoso two-goal performance during Uniteds Champions League debut, the former Everton striker reached the 200-goal plateau. He now sits in fourth place on the all-time Manchester United goal scoring list. Another 50 would see him surpass Sir Bobby Charlton at the top. David Moyes (not missing an opportunity to latch onto this as the club look to extend Rooneys contract past next July) commented immediately after he reached the lofty 200 club plateau, saying he could eventually go on to be mentioned in the same breath as Uniteds most illustrious and accomplished players. And by extension, alongside some of the worlds greats. Hows that for a carrot to contemplate? Not so fast. Even for Waynes Manchester United World. Invoking Peles endorsement of Best as the greatest ever, Bones cited that locally-held Mancunian expression which sums up poetically where Best sits amongst planet footballs all-time greats. "We have a saying here in Manchester," he said. "Pele Good, Maradona Better, George Best." But its effective, and tough on the catcher. Working in his typical fast pace, Buehrle (11-7) pitched seven scoreless innings to pick up his 11th win of the season as Toronto outlasted the Kansas City Royals 3-2 at Rogers Centre. Buehrle struck out five and allowed four hits in his 50th career start -- and 22nd career victory -- against his former division rival. "Its a hard 84, my fingers really hurt when he pitches," Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia said with a laugh. "It really pops the mitt so I think its a loud 84 -- hed be happy that I said that. "But he mixes up pitches. He mixes up sinker, cutter, change-up, curveball, in, out, up, down. He really commands the entire zone and its impressive." Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie was also impressed with Buehrles outing. Lawrie says hes a fan of the leftys quick pace, which he believes helps offset his opponents. "Thats one of my biggest things -- pace," the Langley, B.C., native said. "It keeps everybody in the game and it allows everyone to stay in the game, but he gets us back in the dugout. I think he makes the other teams uncomfortable by just working with his pace, gets them in the box and he just gets ahead of guys, gets them off balance. "It allows us to get in the dugout, put up a couple of runs and he gets right back out there and does it again." Adam Lind picked up two RBIs, and Ryan Goins went 1 for 4 to extend his hit streak to seven games. The 25-year-old Goins is now 11 for 26, with a hit in each of his seven games since being called up from the triple-A Buffalo Bisons last Friday. Goins defence also came up big for the Blue Jays as the rookie dove for a sharply hit single and fired the ball to first base for the final out of the game. "Hes doing a terrific job, he really is," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "Theres no panic in the kid. As we said early on ... He carries himself like he belongs here. And things happening on the field show you that, the results are there." Alex Gordon and Eric Hosmer each recorded two hits for the Royals (69-65), and Ervin Santana (8-8) pitched seven innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits. Santana racked up six strikeouts and walked two batters. Brett Cecil allowed two runs in the eighth inning ffor Toronto (61-74) before being replaced by Sergio Santos, who forced two ground outs to get out of the inning. Whitey Ford Jersey. Casey Janssen gave up singles to Mike Moustakas and Jarrod Dyson in the top of the ninth, but picked up his 25th save of the season. The Jays victory snaps Kansas Citys five-game winning streak. "You dont ever want to lose at this time of year but it was a good game," said Royals manager Ned Yost. "We fought to the end, it just didnt happen." Lind put the Blue Jays on the board early, hitting a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first inning to score Goins and Edwin Encarnacion. In the fifth, Anthony Gose smacked a lead-off triple to centre field, losing his helmet along the basepaths before trotting into third base standing up. Goins picked up his second major-league RBI to extend the Jays lead to 3-0 with a single that scored his former Bisons teammate. Former Blue Jay Emilio Bonifacio beat out an infield single and stole second in the first inning to bring his stolen base total with the Royals to nine in nine attempts. The second baseman -- returning to Toronto for the first time since being traded to Kansas City two weeks ago -- was booed by the Rogers Centre crowd before each of his at-bats. Bonifacio was also charged with an error. The Royals threatened in the top of the fourth when Buehrle walked Salvador Perez on four pitches, and gave up a double to Moustakas. But the 34-year-old lefty recovered, striking out Justin Maxwell to end the threat. It wasnt until Buehrle left the game that the Royals could inflict some damage. Gordon hit an RBI single off Cecil in the eighth to score Alcides Escobar and put Kansas City on the board, and Eric Hosmer followed with a single of his own to bring the Royals within one run. NOTES: Encarnacion is one RBI shy of becoming the seventh player in club history to record back-to-back 100-plus RBI seasons. LUBBOCK, Texas -- Marcus Smart hustled back on defence to prevent a dunk and went careening into the crowd behind the basket. Detroit Red Wings Shirts . He was helped to his feet with only seconds remaining and No. 19 Oklahoma State on its way to a fourth straight defeat. Thats when all the trouble started. Suddenly incensed, Smart got in the face of a Texas Tech fan who appeared to say something to the star guard. Smart shoved him with two hands. The man stumbled backward a bit, but didnt fall. Teammates quickly pulled Smart away from the fracas, and he pointed back in the direction of the fan. Smart was called for a technical foul but was not ejected. He remained on the bench until the final buzzer. As fans stormed the court to celebrate Texas Techs 65-61 win Saturday night, Smart was escorted off the floor by a man wearing Oklahoma State colours -- with a uniformed police officer trailing right behind. A unanimous selection to the preseason All-America team, Smart could now face discipline from the Big 12. Texas Tech spokesman Trenten Hilburn said John Underwood, the conferences associate commissioner for basketball, said the league would review the situation. "I didnt see it yet. I want to make sure I see it and see what happened," Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford said after the game. "Im still trying to figure it out." No Cowboys players were made available to reporters after the game. Smart tried to block Jaye Crocketts dunk attempt from behind with 6.2 seconds to go and tumbled into the front row of the crowd. He was helped up by one man but then went after another, Jeff Orr, who travels thousands of miles each year to attend Texas Tech basketball games, according to athletic department spokesman Blayne Beal. Smart pushed Orr, and fans nearby looked stunned -- one wide-eyed woman next to Orr pointed at Smart as he was pulled away. Texas Tech coach Tubby Smith said he turned away from the play and didnt see the altercation. "You really have to find the film to see what happened," he said. "I assume the officials saw what happened. Thats why he got a technical out of it. The frustration when youre losing sometimes on a losing streak, Ive been there before, it can be tough. Im sure he regrets doing that, whatever he did, so things like that happen in the heat of the battle." Crockett scored 21 points and tied his season high with 12 rebounds to lead Texas Tech. Smart had 22 points and Phil Forte added 15 for the Cowboys (16-7, 4-6 Big 12). Considered one of the best all-around players in the country, Smart has showed frustration more than once during an inconsistent season. The sophomore guard got off to a fantastic start, leading to speculation that he could be the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft this year. He has struggled in some recent games, though, including a four-point effort against West Virginia when he kicked a chair on the bench. That led to him apologizing to his teammates afterward. This one was tied at 61 when Crockett hit the go-ahead shot with 41 seconds remaining. Oklahoma States LeBryan Nash lost the ball in the lane, and Crockett raced toward the basket at the other end. Smart knocked the ball away and was called for a foul, then pushed Orr and drew the technical. Dusty Hannahs and Crockett each made one of two free throws for the final margin. The Red Raiders (12-11, 4-6) earned their second win over a Top 25 team in the past month. They beat then-No. 12 Baylor in January. None of Texas Techs players had ever played in front of a sellout crowd at home before. The last two at United Spirit Arena came in January 2007, including New Years Day when former Red Raiders coach Bob Knight got his 880th win to become the winningest coach in Division I. This victory gave the Red Raiders as many Big 12 wins this season as they had the past two years combined. The score was tied 13 times and the lead changed 12 times as each team put together runs throughout the game. Oklahoma State went on a 17-7 spurt to open the second half, including two 3-pointers by Forte and six points from Smart, to go up 44-36. But the Red Raiders didnt buckle. They used a 9-2 run to pull to 46-45 with 11:14 remaining. Texas Tech went ahead 51-48 on a 3 by Crockett right before Kamari Murphy picked up his fourth foul with 7:47 left. The Cowboys answered, culminating with a 3-pointer from Smart to go up 57-54 with 4:31 remaining. Crockett quickly tied it at 57 with a 3. Oklahoma State struggled early, making one field goal in 11 tries. But the Cowboys used a 10-0 run to go up 14-10. The Red Raiders answered with a 9-2 run and later an 8-2 spurt in the final 1:29 of the half to lead 29-27. Oklahoma States point total for the half was a season low. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS@ LOS ANGELES -- Patrick Kane learned of his grandfathers death shortly before game time, and he handled the pain in the only way he could imagine. By playing his heavy heart out. Kane had two goals and an assist, Nick Leddy had a goal and an assist, and the Chicago Blackhawks snapped their recent slump with a 5-3 victory over the struggling Los Angeles Kings on Monday night. After scoring goals early and late in his first three-point game since Dec. 28, Kane choked up in the dressing room while thinking about his grandfather, Donald, who lived next door during his childhood in Buffalo. "Just a tough day overall," Kane said. "He was one of my great friends growing up. Just a really sad day. It was important to get the win, but any time you get someone taken away from you thats so close to you, means so much, its tough to hear that right before the game, for sure." Kane pointed skyward after his first goal 1:02 into the game, coming out of the corner and beating U.S. Olympic teammate Jonathan Quick during a power play. "You think about it a couple of times on the bench, but I was just trying to focus on the game tonight," Kane said. "Just play well for him, I guess." Chicago coach Joel Quenneville didnt learn about Kanes extra burden until early in the game. Kanes teammates praised him for his poise while mourning his loss. "Hes a proud guy, and I think his grandfather meant a lot to him," Quenneville said. "It was probably an emotional night for him, but he played an unbelievable game." Kane had plenty of help. Marcus Kruger scored the tiebreaking goal on a double deflection in the second period for the defending Stanley Cup champions. Bryan Bickell also scored and Corey Crawford made 31 saves as Chicago swept the three-game season series between last seasons Western Conference finalists. Kane warmed up for Sochi with his first multigoal game since Dec. 14, while Canadian Olympic counterparts Patrick Sharp and captain Jonathan Toews picked up two assists apiece for the Blackhawks, who had lost five of six. Leddy contributed his first goal and first multipoint game since Dec. 23. Anze Kopitar had a goal and two assists in Los Angeles highest-scoring performance since Jan. 21. Drew Doughty and Tyler Toffoli also scored, and Jonathan Quick stopped 25 shots in the Kings ninth loss in 10 games. "Tonight, energy-wise I think, was our best night in a while," Kings captain Dustin Brown said. "Weve got to just keep plugging along. I know its a broken record, but were not going to get out of it by doing anything different. ... Theres definitely frustration. If youre not frustrated in this room, theres something wrong with you." Although the Kings scored more than one goal for the first time in seven games, it wasnt enough to beat the NHLs highest-scoring team, which had lost two of three on its six-game road trip heading into the Olympic break. Los Angeles had scored just three total goals in the last six games heading into this meeting of the NHLs last two champs. "I think that we have a couple of guys that are frustrated with their own games," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. "Theyre having a hard time right now, whether its the schedule or just where theyre at with their own games. Thats something they need to deal with themselves, for sure." The Kings got off to a horrific start yet again: Kane scored after Doughty took a charging penalty 24 seconds after the opening faceoff. Bickell then scored on a slick pass from Kane, but Doughty kept it close with his eighth goal on a one-timer moments later. His goal was the first by any Kings player except Kopitar in nearly two weeks. Kopitar evened it with a flip of a bouncing puck on a 3-on-1 rush, for his 17th goal, but Chicago went back ahead when Leddys shot from the point deflected off Krugers blade and smacked Kings defenceman Matt Greenes stick, popping over Quicks shoulder. After Leddy scored with 12:59 to play, Sharp set up Kanes second goal moments later. NOTES: Quick has started 15 of the Kings 16 games since he returned from a seven-week injury absence. ... CHICAGO -- D. Tevin Coleman Super Bowl Jersey .J. Augustin came into the league with high expectations. He came to Chicago simply looking for another chance. Augustin delivered on Saturday, scoring 18 points to help the short-handed Bulls beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 100-84 and snap a four-game losing streak. Carlos Boozer led the way with 19 points, and rookie Tony Snell came on strong in the second half to finish with 17 points. Chicago prevailed after matching its longest slide of the season and its longest in four years under coach Tom Thibodeau. "As we get bodies back, D.J. gets comfortable, I said all along that I have great belief in this team," Thibodeau said. Augustin looked like a guy whos settling in. He played more than 46 minutes, hitting 4 of 6 3-pointers while dishing out 10 assists. He did commit five turnovers. But overall it was a good night for a former first-round draft pick whose career hasnt quite gone the way he hoped. Augustin found himself in a limited role with Indiana last season after spending his first four years in Charlotte, and he was waived by Toronto this year before being signed by the Bulls last week. "The Indiana situation, I had some good games there," Augustin said. "At the same time, it was tough. The style of play maybe didnt fit me a little bit. Coach (Frank) Vogel had his guy that he went with, he played the majority of the minutes. I kind of knew that going in. The Toronto situation, I dont know what happened there. But I just tried to stay professional and just keep myself ready." Boozer and Augustin both got off to strong starts as the Bulls built a 17-point halftime lead, and Chicago withstood several pushes down the stretch to come away with the win after dropping 13 of 16. The Bulls shot nearly 54 per cent overall and were 10 of 15 on 3-pointers against a weak defence. Boozer hit 8 of 14 shots. Snell nailed five 3s -- four in the second half -- and finished one point off his career high. Taj Gibson scored 15 points. Joakim Noah grabbed 18 rebounds, and Chicago got a reprieve from the losing despite all its injuries. Besides Derrick Rose, the Bulls were also missing the injured Luol Deng (sore left Achilles), Jimmy Butler (sprained right ankle) and Kirk Hinrich (back). But they still had enough to beat Cleveland. "There were a lot of things I saw our team do that you just kind of sit back and go, Is this really us?" coach Mike Brown said. Andrew Bynum had 19 points for the Cavaliers, but Kyrie Irving had a rough night. He finished with 14 points on 5-of-16 shooting after fighting through an illness to score 39 in Fridays overtime win over Milwaukee, and the Cavaliers lost for the third time in four games. It didnt help that they were missing second-leading scorer Dion Waiters, who sat out his second straight game because of a sore right wrist. "Theres no excuses, we just didnt execute on both ends of the floor," Irving said. The Bulls saw a 19-point lead early in the third shrink to 68-61 late in the quarter. But a basket by Gibson and back-to-back 3-pointers by Snell bumped the lead to 81-65. The Cavaliers made another run in the fourth, cutting their deficit to 85-76 on Matthew Dellavedovas 3, but Chicago hung on. NOTES: Brown expressed sympathy for Kobe Bryant over the Lakers stars most recent injury. "You feel bad for him because of how hard he works, how bad he wants it," Brown said. "To see him go through the last two injuries, especially at this point of his career, makes it tough, makes it tough, so you feel bad for him." Brown was fired by the Lakers early last season and returned to Cleveland for a second tenure in April. ... No. 1 draft pick Anthony Bennett sat out his second straight game for Cleveland because of an illness. ... Deng, averaging 19.6 points, missed his second straight game for Chicago because of a sore left Achilles tendon. Butler left Thursdays game at Oklahoma City because of a sprained right ankle. The Bulls were hoping Hinrich would return from an ailing back against Cleveland. Instead, he missed his fifth straight game. Dee Ford Super Bowl Jersey . He was in his ninth season with Boston, but has played just 90 games over the last threee because of various injuries, most recently a broken hand and a torn ACL. Nick Mullens Super Bowl Jersey. KANSAS CITY, Mo. Kevin King Super Bowl Jersey . - The Royals have agreed to terms with reliever Aaron Crow on a $1.475 million, one-year deal that leaves Greg Holland as their only unsigned arbitration-eligible player. The deal includes a $50,000 bonus if Crow is an All-Star, which he was in 2011. Crow had asked for $1.7 million and the Royals offered the same $1.28 million he made last year. Crow went 7-5 with a 3.38 ERA in 57 games last season. The former first-round pick is 14-10 with a 3.19 ERA in his three-year career. PHILADELPHIA -- Freddie Freeman homered, doubled and drove in all four Atlanta runs to back Julio Teherans strong pitching as the Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 Friday night. Willie Wood Jersey . Freemans three-run homer was caught by Philadelphia play-by-play announcer Tom McCarthy, who was broadcasting the game from centre field along with analysts Matt Stairs and Jamie Moyer, both former Phillies. Teheran (7-5) allowed two runs -- one earned -- and six hits in seven innings. He struck out nine, walked none and retired his final seven batters for Atlanta, which had lost six of 10 beginning with Philadelphias three-game sweep at Turner Field last week. Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless ninth for his 23rd save in 27 chances. Ben Revere had three hits, including a triple, for the Phillies, who have lost five of seven. The Braves jumped on Kyle Kendrick in the first inning thanks to Freemans three-run drive. Freemans RBI double in the second boosted Atlantas lead to 4-0 before Kendrick settled down. Kendrick (3-8) tossed a season-best eight innings, giving up four runs and nine hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. But the early damage was too much to overcome for Philadelphias sagging offence, which entered ranked 11th in the NL in batting average at .241. The Phillies scored three runs or fewer for the 39th time this season and dropped to 7-32 in those games. The Phillies scored twice in the fourth on Jimmy Rollins RBI groundout and Marlon Byrds RBI single. They threatened in the eighth against reliever Jordan Walden, placing runners on first and second with two outs, but Walden fanned Ryan Howard on a 97 mph fastball to end the inning. Philadelphia put a runner in scoring position in the ninth. Byrd drew a leadoff walk, but Kimbrel struck out Cody Asche before John Mayberry Jr. flied out to the wall in left-centre. Domonic Brown, out of the starting lineup for the second straight day and third time in five games, struck out as a pinch-hitter to end the game. Gerald Laird replaced Evan Gattis behind the plate for the Braves after the top of the first. Gattis struck out swinging in the first and left the game due to back spasms. Laird went 1 for 3 with a double. NOTES: Philadelphia placed catcher Carlos Ruiz on the seven-day DL with concussion-like symptoms. Ruiz was hit in the head by A.J. They had no intentions of taking it easy on them. Austin Daye had 22 points and Tim Duncan added 19 as the Spurs earned their 14th straight win with a 113-91 victory Monday night that sent the 76ers to their 25th consecutive loss. Philadelphia will face Houston on Thursday with the dubious distinction of being a loss shy of tying the NBA record for consecutive losses set by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2010-11. Before the game, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he felt terrible for former assistant Brett Brown, now the 76ers coach. But he added that he did not feel sorry for "one of my best friends," because pity would upset his former protégé. "Obviously, its a rough season for them," Duncan said. "Its a rebuilding season for them. (Brown) knows that, they know that. They have a lot of young guys. Hes just trying to get the system in place that has them playing the way he wants them playing. Its a process. He knows that." Kawhi Leonard and Patty Mills scored 15 points each and Cory Joseph added 12 for San Antonio, which maintained the leagues best record at 54-16. The Spurs did not play starters Tony Parker, Tiago Splitter and Danny Green, but did not need them against the lowly 76ers. Thaddeus Young and Michael Carter-Williams each scored 19 points, Byron Mullens added 15 and Elliot Williams had 14 for Philadelphia (15-56). Daye, who was averaging 2.3 minutes while playing in only four games since being acquired from Toronto on Feb. 20, finished 6-for-10 on 3-pointers and had six rebounds in 29 minutes. It was familiar to Brown, who served as an assistant under Popovich for seven seasons. "Hes lucky," Brown said, "and Ive seen this over so many years — people can come into that system and shine. This system creates opportunities for everybody, and he took advantage of those. The attention you have to give others and the movement that they have in their structure allowed him to get freed up a lot. "He reaped the benefit of playing in that system." The Sixers kept pace early against the Spurs, with Carter-Williams fearlessly driving into the paint for a series of short jumpers and Hollis Thompson hitting a pair of 3s. Popovich called timeout with 3:44 left in the first quarter after Williams dunked over Duncan to tie it at 19. Philadelphias early success awoke the Spurs and brought out the best in Daye. His athleticism and energy were just what San Antonio needed after a listless sttart. Tramon Williams Jersey. "Hes a skilled guy," Popovich said. "Obviously he can shoot it. But hes also a good passer. He knows how to play the game. It was good to be able to get him some time tonight." San Antonio went on a 26-5 spurt bridging the first and second quarters, capped by a 19-0 run. Daye first ran down Carter-Williams, swatting his layup attempt from behind, leading to Leonards driving layup for a 23-19 lead with 3 minutes left in the opening quarter. Mullens 3-pointer snapped a 6 1/2-minute drought, but the Spurs were up 45-27 with 6:35 left in the first half. Daye then stole an outlet pass on the run, driving directly at a backpedalling Mullens on a 3-on-1 break. Daye faked a behind-the-back pass to Duncan on the left and dished to Joseph on the right, who fed an open Duncan for a layup and a 47-27 lead. "He got an opportunity," Duncan said. "He really stepped up and shot the ball really well. The boy is really long. He made some great plays defensively (and) rebounded the ball. He did a lot of good things out there." The Spurs started Ginobili to give the team another facilitator on the court with Parker out. Ginobili did that and more, scoring seven points and grabbing two rebounds in eight minutes. He drove to the basket for a series of reverse layups, but was blocked by the rim on a one-handed dunk attempt in starting 2 for 3 from the field. San Antonio finished with 31 assists while shooting 56 per cent from the field. "Its tough," Carter-Williams said. "They move the ball really well with the extra pass. They try to move the ball and almost tire you out on defence. You got to be able to rotate and play throughout the shot clock." The victory did little to satiate the Spurs or Popovich, who are hoping to return to the NBA Finals after falling to Miami last season in a heartbreaking seven-game series. "Were playing well through this stretch and winning some games," Duncan said. "Pop is still not satisfied, obviously, with what were doing. We want to stay healthy. We want to stay moving in the right direction. "Hopefully we can ride this into the playoffs and feel good going into the playoffs." NOTES: San Antonios Big Three of Duncan, Ginobili and Parker have played for 39 seasons, which is seven years more experience than the entire Philadelphia roster combined. The 76ers have six rookies on this years roster. ... Former Spurs F Malik Rose, a Philadelphia native, now serves as an analyst for 76ers television. He filled in for the Spurs in the same capacity before joining Philadelphias broadcast team. ' ' '

Marcus Paige added 16 points for the Tar Heels (8-3), who have won two in a row since a loss at top-ranked Kentucky on Dec. 13. Justin Jackson tallied 11 points. Im extremely relieved, said North Carolina coach Roy Williams. Im not as happy as you can possibly be. I dont hear the happy song in my ears right now. We stunk it up down the stretch and I think we have to get better there. Marc Loving ended with 19 points for the Buckeyes (9-2), who had a four-game winning streak snapped. Sam Thompson contributed 17 points. North Carolina jumped out to a 17-8 lead and never looked back. Ahead 28-21, the Tar Heels went on a 15-6 run that Paige capped with a four-point play for a 43-27 advantage. Ohio State scored the final four points of the first half to get within 12. Trailing 64-46 midway through the second half, the Buckeyes put together a 16-6 run. Thompson tallied six points during the surge to help make it a 70-62 contest. "Hes looking for a perfect play all the time, and shooters got to shoot it," Beilein said. "Sometimes whats a bad shot for others is a really good shot for him." Stauskas scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half Sunday, repeatedly making contested shots from the perimeter to help the 20th-ranked Wolverines to a 79-70 win over 13th-ranked Michigan State. Michigan rallied from an 11-point first-half deficit and wrested first place in the Big Ten from its in-state rival. "I just came out with the mindset in the second half that I wasnt going to be stopped," Stauskas said. "Once I made a couple shots, it kept going from there." Caris LeVert added 23 points for the Wolverines (19-7, 11-3), who won both regular-season meetings against Michigan State and six of the last eight games in the series. The Spartans (22-6, 11-4) started well, but were only up 36-34 at halftime. Then Stauskas and LeVert led a second-half charge. The Wolverines trailed 52-51 before going on a 13-0 run that sent the Crisler Center crowd into delirium. Michigan scored 45 points in the second half Sunday -- after blitzing the Spartans for 50 after halftime in an 80-75 win in East Lansing last month. "The first game, I was very proud of our effort. This game, we looked tired," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. "Im not very proud of our effort." Gary Harris scored 21 points for the Spartans. The victory gives Michigan a chance to earn its second Big Ten title in three years after tying for the championship in 2012. The Wolverines have home games against Minnesota and Indiana, as well as trips to Purdue and Illinois. Michigan State has home games against Illinois and Iowa followed by a trip to Ohio State. Stauskas was terrific in Michigans win at Michigan State last month, but he had not scored more than 16 points in a game since then. Perhaps he was letting opposing teams take him out of the offence too easily, but at 6-foot-6, if Stauskas makes up his mind that hhes going to shoot, he usually can. Detroit Red Wings Gear. . With the Wolverines down 48-43, Stauskas scored seven straight points to give Michigan the lead. When the Spartans edged back ahead by one, Stauskas answered with a 3-pointer, and it soon become clear that there wasnt much Michigan State could do to keep him from shooting over defenders on the perimeter. A 3-pointer by Stauskas from the right wing put Michigan ahead 59-52, then LeVert added a 3-pointer and a dunk. With the Spartans wearing down, Jon Horford dunked for Michigan to make it 68-56 -- and that ended a stretch of 23 straight Michigan points by Stauskas or LeVert. Michigan fans serenaded the Spartans with a chant of "little brother" toward the end. The Spartans have battled injuries throughout this season -- Adreian Payne and Brandon Dawson missed the first meeting with Michigan. Dawson was still out Sunday with his broken hand, but Payne is back, and he had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Keith Appling, who has been dealing with a wrist problem, scored only six points for Michigan State. "Yeah, I fell on the wrist again, but I couldnt come out of the game," Appling said. "Its very frustrating right now, because there are things I just cant do, but I cant let that be an excuse. Im the quarterback of this team, like coach always says, and I have to be out there leading." Michigan, of course, has been playing without big man Mitch McGary for over two months, but the Wolverines have overcome his back-related absence thus far. Glenn Robinson III scored 15 points Sunday, including an alley-oop dunk from a driving Stauskas that made it 72-61. Michigan State made 17 shots from 3-point range in its previous game against Purdue, and the Spartans were locked in early in this one. Payne dunked on freshman Zak Irvin while drawing a foul, and the three-point play gave Michigan State a 22-11 lead. The Wolverines responded with a 10-0 run that included 3-pointers by Spike Albrecht and LeVert and a breakaway dunk by Irvin. LeVert scored 14 points in the first half, and his 3-pointer in the final seconds cut Michigan States lead to two. ' ' '

Gronk returns to a big role, Douglas steps out of the shadows, Vick is on his way back, RGIII running strong, Rivers doesnt miss, Lacy leads the way, Luck shines in the spotlight and more in Scott Cullens 50 Points on NFL Week Seven. Nike China Jerseys . 1. Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (8 REC, 114 YDS, 17 targets) returned to action, and not a moment too soon, given the state of the Patriots passing game and while his numbers were good, getting targeted a career-high 17 times in his first game of the season was probably not the most optimal approach for the New England offence. 2. Falcons QB Matt Ryan (20-for-26, 273 YDS, 3 TD) put up good numbers even though he was without injured wide receivers Roddy White and Julio Jones. That created an opportunity for WR Harry Douglas (7 REC, 149 YDS, 1 TD, 7 targets) to step up and he sure did that. 3. Eagles QB Nick Foles (11-for-29, 80 YDS) struggled against Dallas, then got hurt. In came Matt Barkley (11-for-20, 129 YDS, 0 TD, 3 INT) who isnt yet ready for primetime, so its no surprise that Michael Vick is returning as the starting quarterback next week. 4. Washington QB Robert Griffin III (18-for-29, 298 YDS, 2 TD, 1 INT; 84 YDS, 11 carries) had a big game against Chicago. Theres surely more health risk when Griffin runs, but hes been successful, rushing 20 times for 161 yards in the last two weeks. 5. Chargers QB Philip Rivers (22-for-26, 285 YDS, 1 TD) is killing it week after week. His accuracy, a league-best 73.9% completion rate, is notably better than his previous career-high (66.0%). 6. Now that hes healthy, Packers RB Eddie Lacy (108 YDS, 1 TD, 27 touches) is churning out yards just as the Packers hoped, giving them a power running game to both complement their passing game and take over when the aerial assault isnt working. 7. Colts QB Andrew Luck (21-for-38, 229 YDS, 3 TD; 29 YDS, 1 TD, 4 carries) came up big in marquee game. It was the second time in his career that Luck has accounted for four touchdowns in a game. 8. Bears QB Jay Cutler (3-for-8, 28 YDS) suffered a groin injury against Washington and it will keep him out of action for the next four weeks, leaving Josh McCown (14-for-20, 204 YDS, 1 TD; 33 YDS, 4 carries) as the Bears starter. Given McCowns spotty track record -- hes thrown for 300 yards four times in 33 career starts and has 38 touchdowns and 44 interceptions in the NFL -- that makes wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, as well as tight end Martellus Bennett, less appealing than they would be with Cutler at quarterback. 9. Bengals QB Andy Dalton (24-for-34, 372 YDS, 3 TD) had a huge game at Detroit, connecting with WR A.J. Green (6 REC, 155 YDS, 1 TD, 8 targets). It was the second straight week in which Green had 100 yards receiving while also catching all six passes thrown in his direction. 10. Lions QB Matt Stafford (28-for-51, 357 YDS, 3 TD) tried to match Dalton, but came up just short. WR Calvin Johnson (9 REC, 155 YDS, 2 TD, 15 targets) performed much better than he did in Week Six, when he first returned to the lineup after a knee injury. 11. Titans QB Jake Locker (25-for-41, 326 YDS, 2 TD, 1 INT; 29 YDS, 3 carries) made a quick return to the Titans lineup and was productive in a losing effort. WR Kendall Wright (9 REC, 98 YDS, 12 targets) certainly benefitted from having Locker running the offence. 12. Washington TE Jordan Reed (9 REC, 134 YDS, 1 TD, 9 targets) took a big step forward. He had nine catches for 108 yards in the previous two games -- decent production -- before busting out against the Bears. 13. Broncos WR Eric Decker (8 REC, 150 YDS, 1 TD, 13 targets) has been incredibly productive, even as the third-ranked receiver on his team. Decker ranks 11th in fantasy points per game (10.9), while Wes Welker (12.7) is third and Demaryius Thomas (12.6) is sixth. 14. Eagles WR Riley Cooper (6 REC, 88 YDS, 7 targets) played a bigger role in the offence for the second straight week. WR Jason Avant (3 REC, 32 YDS, 12 targets) was actually the most-targeted Eagles receiver, but he wasnt terribly efficient. It will be interesting to see if Cooper can continue to be productive with Vick back under centre. 15. Buccaneers RB Doug Martin (54 YDS, 12 touches) struggled against Atlanta before suffering a shoulder injury that is likely to keep him out indefinitely -- at least a few weeks, but potentially for the rest of the season. Mike James (53 YDS, 17 touches) saw the most action in relief, but he had a total of five touches in his career before that performance, so Brian Leonard and recently-added Bobby Rainey could also be in the mix for carries in Martins absence. 16. While the running game might be a mess, at least Buccaneers WR Vincent Jackson (10 REC, 138 YDS, 2 TD, 22 targets) is salvaging his value, as apparently the only receiver to catch QB Mike Glennons eye. Jackson ranks second in the league with 77 targets after he was targeted 36 times in the last two weeks. 17. With Green Bay missing receivers Randall Cobb and James Jones, Packers WR Jarrett Boykin (8 REC, 103 YDS, 1 TD, 10 targets) stepped into the starting lineup and produced like he should have been a starter all along. 18. Packers TE Jermichael Finley (5 REC, 72 YDS, 1 TD) had a strong game, but suffered a spinal cord contusion, an injury that could keep him out long-term. Andrew Quarless moves up the depth chart in Finleys absence. 19. Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (123 YDS, 1 TD, 24 touches) remains the top back in fantasy, with 898 yards from scrimmage and eight touchdowns. 20. With questions at quarterback, the Bears will need RB Matt Forte (109 YDS, 3 TD, 18 touches) even more. Forte has been remarkably consistent, gaining at least 90 yards in every game this season. 21. Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (110 YDS, 1 TD, 21 carries) has been rejuvenated, going over 100 yards the last couple weeks. Danny Woodhead (76 YDS, 1 TD, 13 touches) remains one of the best non-starting backs in the league. 22. Falcons RB Jacquizz Rodgers (62 YDS, 2 TD, 16 touches) had a reasonably productive day, especially with the pair of touchdowns, but couldnt get loose in the running game, gaining 16 yards on eight carries. Its the second straight game in which Rodgers has scored two touchdowns, adding value to otherwise mediocre yardage totals. 23. Lions RB Reggie Bush (94 YDS, 23 touches) got his touches, but wasnt as productive against the Bengals. Bush still ranks fifth with 731 yards from scrimmage. 24. Bills RB Fred Jackson (85 YDS, 1 TD, 15 touches) suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury, yet somehow returned to action and had another productive day, which stood in stark contrast to C.J. Spiller (7 YDS, 9 touches), a fantasy first-rounder who has gained a total of 398 yards from scrimmage, just ahead of the Saints Pierre Thomas. 25. Washington RB Alfred Morris (95 YDS, 19 carries) had a reasonably productive day, but lost out on a monster fantasy performance because Roy Helu Jr. (41 YDS, 3 TD, 11 carries) got the red zone work. Helu hasp layed a bigger role, with double-digit touches in each of the last three games. 26. 49ers RB Frank Gore (104 YDS, 2 TD, 26 touches) is probably a little under-appreciated, having gaind 637 yards from scrimmage with five touchdowns. In standard fantasy formats, thats good enough to ranks seventh at the position. 27. Texans RB Arian Foster (11 YDS, 4 carries) suffered a hamstring injury at Kansas City, a poor follow-up to his season-high 198 yards from scrimmage the week before. Ben Tate (55 YDS, 17 touches) handled the bulk of the rushing with Foster out, but Tate is seeing his average come down steadily after a strong start. Over the last three games, Tate has 90 yards on 32 carries (2.8 ypc). 28. Steelers RB LeVeon Bell (99 YDS, 20 touches) had a solid game against Baltimore, providing some reason for optimism going forward. 29. Cowboys RB Joseph Randle (93 YDS, 22 touches) was reasonably productive, starting in place of an injured DeMarco Murray. Of course, the only rushing touchdown was a one-yard plunge by Philip Tanner, who had two carries total against the Eagles, so Randle lost out on that potential value booster, but such is the fickleness of goalline carries. 30. Dolphins RB Daniel Thomas (58 YDS, 13 touches) had the edge over Lamar Miller (47 YDS, 10 touches) in the Miami running back battle. It was Thomas most yardage in a game since Nov. 25, 2012. Mabye not enough to take the job from Miller, but enough to limit the appeal of Miller since hes not clearly the number one back. At least not clearly enough. 31. Patriots RB Stevan Ridley (53 YDS, 1 TD, 13 touches) didnt exactly build on his Week Six breakthrough, but his touchdown at least made for a relatively productive day against the Jets. 32. Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (59 YDS, 16 touches) lost some touches, including standard goalline carries, to Mike Tolbert (36 YDS, 1 TD, 13 carries). Williams has been productive this year, gaining 547 yards from scrimmage, but he has zero touchdowns and Jonathan Stewart is back at practice. Stewart isnt expected to play this week, but will be back soon and that will cut into Williams value even more. 33. Jets RB Chris Ivory (104 YDS, 34 carries) took the ball and ran with it against New England, leaving Bilal Powell (6 YDS, 3 carries) to a spectators role. Thats a much heavier workload tha Ivory has handled before and isnt likely to continue but Powell has been the only threat in the Jets backfield this season, so Ivorys emergence makes it look like a backfield with split duties is more of a reality than it has been at any point this year. 34. Colts RB Donald Brown (65 YDS, 14 touches) continues to split carries with Trent Richardson (37 YDS, 1 fumble, 14 carries) in the Colts backfield. 35. Titans RB Chris Johnson (110 YDS, 1 TD, 13 touches) took a break from committing fantasy murder to bust loose for a productive game. His 13 touches was a season low, but his 66-yard TD reception in the fourth quarter against San Francisco salvaged an otherwise unremarkable day. 36. Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (56 yards, 15 touches) had his least productive day since Christmas Eve, 2011. 37. Jets WR Jeremy Kerley (8 REC, 97 YDS, 1 TD, 10 targets) was the preferred choice for Jets QB Geno Smith (17-for-33, 233 YDS, 1 TD, 1 INT) against a New England secondary that was missing its best cornerback, Aqib Talib. 38. Even with Miles Austin playing the last couple weeks, its looking like second-year Cowboys WR Terrance Williams (6 REC, 71 YDS, 1 TD, 7 targets) is usurping Austin as the No. 2 receiver. 39. As for Bears receivers, Alshon Jeffery (4 REC, 105 YDS, 7 targets) and Brandon Marshall (6 REC, 75 YDS, 10 targets) had decent days against Washington, but as long as Josh McCown is involved, beware. 40. Patriots QB Tom Brady (22-for-46, 228 YDS, 0 TD, 1 INT) was held under 230 yards passing for the fourth time in seven games in Sundays loss to the Jets and hes passed for one touchdown in the last three games. 41. Colts WR Reggie Wayne (5 REC, 50 YDS, 8 targets) suffered a torn ACL and is out for the season. Darrius Heyward-Bey (4 REC, 44 YDS, 1 TD, 7 targets; 30 YDS, 1 carry) will have a more prominent role going forward, but T.Y. Hilton becomes the primary option in the Colts passing game. 42. Rams QB Sam Bradford (21-for-30, 255 YDS, 1 TD, 1 INT) suffered a torn ACL against Carolina, ending his season. The Rams offence was already shaky, but with Kellen Clemens at the helm, it could be trouble. If looking for a second-team receiver who could make the jump with a new starting quarterback, consider Brian Quick, a big target who has nine catches for 196 yards this season. 43. If anyone in the Rams offence is going to have value, it may as well be RB Zak Stacy (87 YDS, 1 TD, 21 touches) has gained at least 75 yards in three straight games. 44. Chargers rookie WR Keenan Allen (3 REC, 67 YDS, 6 targets) was just coming into his own, but didnt have a huge day against Jacksonville. Like many receivers facing the Jaguars, their services arent required as much once a team gets out to a sizeable lead. 45. Jacksonvilles trio of wideouts: Cecil Shorts (8 REC, 80 YDS, 13 targets), Justin Blackmon (6 REC, 58 YDS, 9 targets) and Mike Brown (5 REC, 120 YDS, 8 targets) had productive days against San Diego as QB Chad Henne (23-for-36, 318 YDS, 1 INT) had his second straight 300-yard passing game. Of course, Henne hasnt thrown a touchdown in either of those games, so the yardage is pretty much empty calories. 46. Browns QB Brandon Weeden (17-for-42, 149 YDS, 1 TD, 1 INT) had the kind of game that might have been feared/expected. Weedens limitations could translate into limitations for WR Josh Gordon and TE Jordan Cameron, both of whom have shown very positive signs this season. 47. Vikings QB Josh Freeman (20-for-53, 190 YDS, 1 INT) was a mess in his first start, but did have 19 targets to wideouts Greg Jennings and Jerome Simpson, so he wasnt shy about trying to go down the field. He just wasnt effective. 48. Bills DE Mario Williams added a couple more sacks, giving him 10 on the season. Thats 10 in seven games, on pace for 23 in a full 16-game regular season. 49. Bengals OLB Vontaze Burfict (13 tackles, 2 TFL, 2 PD) was undrafted after a tumultuous college career at Arizona State, but now leads the NFL with 77 tackles in his second season. 50. Other defenders with productive days: Cowboys MLB Sean Lee (11 tackles, 1 INT, 1 TFL); Eagles MLB DeMeco Ryans (9 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT); Buccaneers OLB Lavonte David (10 tackles, 3 TFL), Lions MLB Stephen Tulloch (12 tackles, 1 TFL); Dolphins S Reshad Jones (10 tackles, 1 sack); Patriots DE Chandler Jones (11 tackles, 2 sacks); Patriots DT Chris Jones (10 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 TFL); Bears CB Charles Tillman (8 tackles, 1 INT, 1 PD); Rams MLB James Laurinaitis (11 tackles, 1 sack), Jaguars MLB Paul Posluszny (14 tackles), Browns S T.J. Ward (11 tackles, 1 TFL); Packers OLB Jamari Lattimore (12 tackles, 1 sack, 1 PD), Packers ILB A.J. Hawk (12 tackles); Chiefs OLB Tamba Hali (6 tackles, 2.5 sacks), Steelers ILB Lawrence Timmons (17 tackles) Scott Cullen can be reached at Scott.Cullen@bellmedia.ca and followed on Twitter at http://twitter.com/tsnscottcullen. Stitched China Jerseys . Bilbaos first victory in four rounds lifted it four points clear of Real Sociedad and kept it in command of Spains last Champions League berth for next season. In contrast, Betis was left 11 points from safety after a dismal performance that at times bordered on self-destruction amid some questionable refereeing decisions. https://www.chinasjerseys.com/ . Jeter doubled high off the left-field wall and scored on Jacoby Ellsburys first hit in pinstripes in the fifth. Hiroki Kuroda (1-1) pitched 6 1-3 sharp innings in the Yankees 112th opener in New York. In what manager Joe Girardi said would be a season-long lovefest for Jeter, the shortstop was cheered every step of the way by an adoring crowd of 48, 142 -- even when his double-play grounder back to Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez (0-2) scored Solarte in the third inning for the first run.TORONTO -- Premier Kathleen Wynne is defending a $7-million bonus package for 64 executives organizing the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games, saying it was necessary to avoid losing key personnel ahead of the event. "We may think its out of whack in terms of comparing it with other endeavours," she said Monday. "But the reality is we were competing for multi-sport games with other jurisdictions around the Americas, and thats the structure we put in place in order to be able to compete and draw the Games here. "I think we should be celebrating that. We should be celebrating that we won the Games." Winning the Games comes at a steep cost. The $1.4-billion budget for the Games doesnt include $700 million to build the athletes village or $10 million for the provincial Pan Am secretariat, which oversees TO2015. Ian Troop, CEO of the Pan Am committee, was paid a base salary of $390,000 last year plus an $87,000 bonus. Hes eligible for a $780,000 bonus if the Games come in on budget and on time. Pan Am executives earning between $190,000 and $250,000 will be eligible for bonuses of up to 100 per cent of their annual pay when the Games are over -- half for staying on the job and the other half conditional on performance. The Opposition Conservatives say its ridiculous TO2015 executives are in line for generous bonuses for "sleepwalking" through the job they were hired to do. "When its 200 per cent of your salary when youre making $477,000, thats a problem," said Tory critic Rod Jackson. "Were not getting value for our money." The premier slammed some of those well-paid executives last week for billing taxpayers for "ridiculous" expenses like a 91-cent parking fee and a $1.89 cup of tea. The Liberals have since ordered TO2015 to tighten its expense rules. But theyve defended the bonuses, saying its similar to other multi-sport event organizations like the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games. Tourism, Culture and Sport Minister Michael Chan said the Pan Am Games will be even bigger than the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, with more than 10,000 athletees and officials from 41 nations, who will compete in 51 sports. China Jerseys Wholesale. VANOC budgeted about $30 million for bonuses to all its employees after the Olympics, but ended up cancelling them. The government shouldnt award generous bonuses just because its always been done, said Jackson. "When youre dealing with public money, you need to be responsible for that public money and you cant give away responsibility for that," he said. Its unbelievable that Wynne can act outraged about a 91-cent expense, but not blink an eye at a $780,000 bonus, said NDP Leader Andrea Horwath. "Most people in Ontario wont see that kind of money in 10 years of work and the premier tries to say this is about job creation," she said. "No, this is about $780,000 that might have actually provided jobs for 10 people." The Liberals have been dogged for years by spending controversies, including handsomely paid eHealth consultants and former executives at the provinces Ornge air ambulance services being reimbursed for chocolate bars and $14 cashews. The latest setback comes as the Liberals brace for the release of the auditor generals long-awaited report on the true costs of cancelling a gas plant in Oakville in 2010. It was one of two plants in Liberal ridings that were scrapped ahead of the 2011 election, in what the opposition parties have derided as an expensive seat-saver program. The Liberals originally pegged the cost of killing the Oakville plant at $40 million, but the most recent estimate is $310 million. Pulling the plug on the Mississauga plant in the dying days of the 2011 election campaign cost about $275 million -- $85 million more than the government originally claimed, the auditor general concluded last April. Voters in the next election should be asking themselves whether they trust the Liberals with their money, said Jackson. They always pass the buck to agencies like eHealth, saying theyre the ones that screwed up, then promise to tighten the rules, he said. "Weve seen this refrain over and over again and its not good enough," Jackson said. ' ' '
TORONTO - The Kansas City Royals have recalled right-hander Aaron Brooks from Triple-A Omaha to start against the Blue Jays on Saturday and optioned utilityman Jimmy Paredes to Triple-A. China Cheap Jerseys . Brooks replaces right-hander Yordano Ventura, who left his last outing with a sore elbow. Ventura is expected to miss one start. Brooks has made one relief appearance for the Royals this season, allowing six runs in two innings in a May 3 loss to Detroit. He was 4-1 with a 3.12 ERA in eight games at Omaha. His opponent Saturday will be Blue Jays rookie right-hander Marcus Stroman, who was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo following Fridays game, a 6-1 Royals victory. Josh Donaldson hit a game-ending three-run homer off Joe Nathan with one out in the ninth and Scott Kazmir pitched his first complete game in nearly eight years to help the As rally for a 3-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night. "Its always a bit of a relief," As manager Bob Melvin said. "But its not like Nathan is a day at the beach either. But certainly when a guy has had your number for that long for that period of time, you feel like now here is a new breath of life for us." Sanchez was in command all night, allowing only two hits as he took a shutout bid into the ninth inning before Oakland rallied to hand the Tigers their eighth loss in 10 games. Coco Crisp got it started with one out when he hit an opposite-field double just inside the third-base line that ended Sanchezs night after 111 pitches. John Jaso greeted Nathan with a single off third baseman Nick Castellanos glove to set the stage for Donaldson. "The big out there was getting Jaso," Nathan said. "You get him and it changes everything. It changes how you approach Donaldson. It changes how you pitch to him. It gives me a chance to play with him a little bit. When we didnt get Jaso, it put us in a tough spot." Donaldson made the most of his opportunity, hitting a towering drive down the left-field line that he stood and watched, hoping it would stay fair. It did as he ended up with his second career walk-off homer, having also hit one April 12, 2013, against the Tigers. "They had about three balls tonight that went down that line and they kind of kept hooking foul," Donaldson said. "I saw where mine started. I was just praying that it would stay fair." It did and Nathan (2-1) blew his fouurth save in 16 chances. Stitched Cheap Jerseys. "It was a tough spot to bring Joe into, with the tying run on second base," manager Brad Ausmus said. "He has no margin for error. It was tough spot." Kazmir (6-2) allowed six hits and no walks with eight strikeouts, giving up only a solo homer to Torii Hunter in the fourth inning in his second career complete game. "As a fan that was a fun game to watch right there. It was," Kazmir said. "Throughout the whole game Anibal and I were just battling it out, out for out. We ended up getting a couple of baserunners up in the ninth and Donaldson comes up. You just kind of had that feeling when he came up to be honest with you. He saw that first pitch and didnt miss it. It was awesome." Sanchez faced the minimum through three innings with centre fielder Rajai Davis making a diving catch in the gap to rob Yoenis Cespedes of extra bases in the second inning and the Tigers turning a well-executed 3-6-1 inning-ending double play after Josh Reddick walked in the third for Oaklands first baserunner. The As got their first hit the following inning when Donaldson hit a clean single to centre. Sanchez was helped again by his defence after that with first baseman Miguel Cabrera snaring a liner by Brandon Moss to end the inning and preserve the 1-0 lead. The Tigers had gone ahead in the top half of the inning when Hunter hit a drive over the fence in right-centre for his eighth homer of the season. Hunter hit a game-tying solo shot in Detroits 6-5 win Tuesday night. NOTES: Kazmirs only other complete game came in a 3-0 win over Boston on July 3, 2006. ... PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks rallied after a shaky start. Fred Warner Super Bowl Jersey . They couldnt finish it off, unable to add on runs or stop one of baseballs best hitters when they needed to. Cahill laboured in his second start since returning to the rotation and Miguel Cabrera hit a hope-ending three-run homer in the eighth inning, sending the Diamondbacks to an 11-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. "We have been great about that, no question about it," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said of coming back. "They felt us coming and we had a good attitude and put up some good at-bats." Detroit had more productive ones. Austin Jackson had the first one, a three-run double in the fourth inning as the Tigers roughed up Cahill (1-7) for seven runs in four innings. Arizona clawed its way back against Anibal Sanchez (7-4), though, scoring three runs off him in the fifth and two more over the next two innings. With Tigers clinging to a two-run lead with two on and no outs in the seventh inning, Joba Chamberlain replaced Sanchez and needed one pitch to escape a jam he created by Sanchez. That set the stage for Cabrera in the eighth and the Triple Crown winner came through, fouling off a couple of pitches from Matt Stites before hitting his 15th homer off the foul pole in left. Alex Avila had three RBIs and Rajai Davis had three of Detroits 13 hits to improve the best road record in baseball to 30-17. "The hitters, they did their job," Sanchez said. "They give me enough runs to get the win." Sanchez followed up a strong start against Kansas City with a shaky one against Cleveland, allowing four runs in six innings his last start. The right-hander has been good on the road this season and was sharp early against the Diamondbacks with a big lead. That changed in the fifth inning, when Gerado Parra and Martin Prado hit consecutive doubles then Gregorius splashed a two-run homer into the pool in right-centre to cut Detroits lead to 7-3. Parra had a run-scoring single in the sixth inning and David Peralta added another in the seventh to cut Detroits lead to 7-5. Arizona had two on with no outs after that, but Sanchez got Aaron Hill to fly out and Chamberlain induced Paul Goldschmidt into an inning-ending double play on his lone pitch in the inning. Sanchez allowed five runs on 11 hits and struck out four in 6 1-3 innings. "His stuff is good, I just think when hes missed his spots, theyve hit it," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. Cahill had a decent outing after being called up from the minors his last start, allowing three runs on four hits in five innings of a no-decision against the Chicago Cubs. His second start didnt go so well. Avila hit a two-run single off Cahill in the second inning and the Tigers poured it on in the fourth, scoring five runs with the help of an error by Hill at second base. Avila had a sacrifice fly for the only earned run in the inning and Jackson had the big hit, a three-run double that got past left fielder Mark Trumbos diving attempt. Cahill allowed seven runs -- three earned -- on eight hits to remain winless in six starts this season. "Hitting is contagious and they got on a roll," Cahill said. Arizona managed to rally, but Cabrera put the game out of reach with one big swing. NOTES: Tigers RF Torii Hunter was given a day off despite swinging a hot bat. He has hit .381 with five homers, 12 runs and 20 RBIs over the past 16 games. OF J.D. Martinez tweaked his quadriceps against Arizona on Tuesday and was held out of the lineup. ... Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hi Kerry, This may sound like a silly question but Im watching Anaheim and Vancouver Monday night and during a stoppage of play, I noticed that when the linesman Brian Mach No. 78, had gone over to help Eddie Lack with a small equipment issue with his chest protector - his fight strap was undone! I thought jerseys must be "tied down" properly at all times. Does this rule not apply to goalies? Thanks for all you do - the best to ever ref the NHL!Rachel Tilton Hi Rachel: Thank you for the kudos. All players of each team must be dressed uniformly with approved design and color of their team uniform. Altered uniforms of any kind, i.e. Velcro inserts, over-sized jerseys, altered collars, etc., will not be permitted. Any player or goalkeeper not complying with this rule shall not be permitted to participate in the game. A players jersey must be "tied down" properly at all times as per rule 9.3. It is very difficult to detect if a player is not properly tied down unless he becomes involved in an altercation. The only time that a penalty applies to a player not properly tied down is if he engages in a fight and his jersey is removed compleetely off his torso, in which case a game misconduct is assessed (46. C. J. Beathard Super Bowl Jersey. 3). The exception to this application is when the opponent has been identified as the instigator; a game misconduct shall not be assessed regardless as to whether or not the player (non-instigator) was properly tied down. I have seen players who do not expect to fight (typically skilled players) participate in the game without tying down their jerseys. While this makes little sense, it their prerogative as it is next to impossible for the referee to detect (goalkeeper included). Specific to goalkeepers no inserts or additions are to be added to the standard goalkeeper-cut jersey as produced by the manufacturer unless approved by the League. In addition goalkeepers are not allowed any "tying down" of the sweater at the wrists if it creates a tension across the jersey such that a "webbing effect" is created in the armpit area. No other tie downs are allowed that create a webbing effect." The length of a jersey is illegal if it covers any area between the goalkeepers legs. In short, any excessive material that would provide the goalkeeper with added coverage of his net is not permitted. Unless a goalkeeper intended to fight during the game he would likely not snap the tab on the back of pants. ' ' '

GLENDALE, Ariz. Jeff Wilson Super Bowl Jersey . - Their post-season hopes all but gone, the Winnipeg Jets are content to play spoiler in the NHL Western Conference playoff race. Andrew Ladd scored in regulation and in the second round of the shootout, and Ondrej Pavelec stopped Antoine Vermettes attempt to send the Jets to a 2-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday night. Pavelec finished with 28 saves. The Coyotes dropped into a tie for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with the Dallas Stars, who blanked the Capitals 5-0. Dallas has a game in hand with seven to play. Ladds winning shot hit the post and went off Coyotes goalie Thomas Greiss leg and into the net. "Its a game of inches," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "Theres an extra point there youd certainly like to have, but it wasnt for lack of trying. It was a fast, hard, tight hockey game. They got a couple of bounces and we didnt." The Coyotes had chances. Jets wing Blake Wheeler was whistled for a high-sticking penalty with 1:15 left in overtime, but the Coyotes couldnt take advantage and the game went to a shootout. Ladd opened the scoring 10:01 into the first period, firing the puck past Greiss from inside the left faceoff circle. Ladd took a pass from Bryan Little and his wrist shot found the back of the net. Little extended his points streak to seven games. The Jets were coming off a frustrating 5-4 overtime loss at Anaheim the night before and wrapped up a five-game road trip in Arizona. "It was a mental grind for a lot of guys, but I think you look at the Anaheim game, we come up with that win, were looking at a 3-2 (road trip)," Ladd said. "So I think we learned a lot about ourselves this trip and it was nice to finish off this way." Jets coach Paul Maurice said Pavelec was the difference. "We knew it wasnt going to be pretty or textbook," Maurice said. Winnipegs 1-0 lead after the opening frame marked the first time the Coyotes had trailed on home ice after the first period since Jan. 20 against Toronto. The Coyotes evened it up 19 seconds into the second period when Zbynek Michalek scored on a close-range shot with Vermette and Mikkel Boedker assisting. "We played against a team that is below us in the standings," Michalek said. "In a shootout its pretty much about luck. We didnt get the point and weve got to move on." Both teams had good chances in the third period, but shots by Ladd and the Coyotes Shane Doan and Michalek were blocked or sailed over the net during the seventh minute. Boedkers shot with 9:50 left in the third hit the post and bounced away. Dustin Byfuglien misfired with 6:25 to play from right in front of the goal and Phoenix centre Kyle Chipchuras shot was saved by Pavelec with 4:30 left in regulation. "We really cant be worried about them," the Coyotes Keith Yandle said of the Stars. "Theyre a good team, theyre going to win games. We have to do our part and win games." NOTES: The fans in the crowd of 13,724 wore more Jets blue than Coyotes red. The Coyotes heard many "Lets Go Jets!" chants throughout the evening. . The Coyotes were without defenceman David Schlemko (lower body injury), right wing David Moss (ankle) and goalie Mike Smith (knee), who missed his fourth straight game though he is skating in practice. . ROME, Ga. -- The Atlanta Braves are facing the possibility of losing another pitcher for the season after general manager Frank Wren said Saturday that Cory Gearrin has a serious injury to his right elbow. Wren said Braves orthopedist Dr. Xavier Duralde on Friday found "ligament involvement" in Gearrins elbow. Wren said the right-hander will see Dr. James Andrews next week for a second opinion and a "definite diagnosis." Clearly, the Braves have braced for bad news. "I think he has a significant injury," Wren said. It is another blow to a Braves staff that already has lost starting pitchers Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy this spring to their second Tommy John surgeries. "Weve kind of eaten through our depth," Wren said. "It looked like we were in pretty good shape coming into spring training with some guys about to get healthy and all of a sudden the next thing you know were pretty thin." Gearrin was placed on the disabled list on Saturday and left-hander Ryan Buchter was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett. Gearrin, a reliever, left Tuesdays spring training game against Detroit with what was described as an elbow sprain. Wren attempted to address the injuries to Medlen and Beachy by signing Ervin Santana and Aaron Harang this month. Still, the staff will be especially thin for the start of the season as Santana continues to work into form and Mike Minor and Gavin Floyd recover from injuries. Minor, who was scheduled to pitch in an exhibition game against top Braves minor leaguers on Saturday, will open the season on the disabled list as he recovers from a sore shoulder. C. J. Beathard Super Bowl Jersey. Floyd is recovering from surgery in May to repair the ulnar collateral ligament and a torn flexor muscle in his right elbow. The Braves hope Minor and Floyd can join the rotation by late April. Santana is expected to be ready by mid-April. Gearrin was 2-1 with a 3.77 ERA and one save in 37 games with Atlanta in 2013, his first full season in the majors. He was expected to serve in a setup role for closer Craig Kimbrel. The Braves return Luis Avilan, David Carpenter, Anthony Varvaro and Jordan Walden as veteran relievers but now may have more youth than expected in the bullpen. "We always find a way to do it and get over it," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Somebody else will step up. I have the confidence in our club that theyll overcome that." Wren said Gearrins injury forced him to look for more outside help. "We have been watching very closely other moves to see if there was someone who could upgrade us or someone who could help us and we havent seen anyone we felt were better than the pitchers we have," Wren said. The Braves released veteran Freddy Garcia before signing Harang. Wren said the team was not considering re-signing Garcia. Wren said the Braves are not the only team having to adjust to injuries. "When I look around baseball theres a lot of us like this," Wren said. "Its just one of those springs and theres not a lot you can do about it." ' ' '
The NBAs life ban for Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling won swift support in Europe but also produced calls for soccer to show similar resolve against racism. J. D. Smith Jersey . FIFA president Sepp Blatter and UEFA president Michel Platini, via his spokesman, both voiced approval on Wednesday. Blatter tweeted: "Sport says no to racism. I fully support (at)NBAs decision to ban (at)LAClippers owner for life after his racist words." Patrick Vieira, a 1998 World Cup winner with France, also tweeted: "Well done to (at)NBA, another organisation dealing with racism in exactly the right way. I say again - zero tolerance." NBA Commissioner Adam Silver wants Sterling to sell as part of a series of sanctions brought against the leagues longest-tenured owner in response to racist comments in a recorded conversation. Silver banned Sterling for life, fined him $2.5 million, and said he will press the other team owners to support his desire to make Sterling sell. For some in Europe, the NBAs resolve was in stark contrast to soccer leaders failure to eradicate racism that has dogged stadiums and marred matches for decades. Just last weekend, a Villarreal season-ticket holder racially taunted Barcelona defender Dani Alves by throwing a banana at him. Retired British NBA player John Amaechi noted that players, executives and owners in the American league appeared united in their rejection of Sterling. "If they can do that to respond to a hateful private utterance, why the hell cant football do that to respond to repeated instances of hate-mongering?" Amaechi said in a phone interview with The Associated Press. "Its time that we started looking at some of the owners within other parts of sport," outside the NBA, he said. "Theyre exactly the type of plantation mentality people who dont mind having black people working for them ... But God forbid that they want to come up to the big house." Amaechi said he doesnt expect the NBAs exemplary punishment of Sterling will jolt soccer into meaningful change. And Blatters tweet of support for the NBA was "not enough," he added. "If there was a poster-person for the words impotence and apathy, it would have his face on it," Amaechi said. "You know what theyre going to do? Theyre going to produce another pretty poster with platitudes plastered all over it. Theyre going to produce another campaign that has a black player stood next to a white player," he said. "Nothing substantive." FIFA and UEFA, the European authority, have toughened their sanctions for discrimination in the past year and prosecuted cases more quickly. A turning point in awareness of widespread problems with offensive abuse at matches came in January 2013 when Kevin-Prince Boateng, then playing for AC Milan, led teammates walking off the field to protest racist insults during an exhibition against a fourth-tier Italian side. FIFA and UEFA have ordered national and club teams to play matches in empty or partly closed stadiums as punishment for racial abuse incidents, but no World Cup or Champions League team has yet had points deducted or forfeited a match. Among the most severe judgments, FIFA has banned Croatia defender Josip Simunic for 10 matches -- including the 2014 World Cup -- for leading fans in chanting a Nazi-era nationalist slogan after a playoff victory against Iceland last November. Simunic has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Matt Light Jersey .ca. Mr. Fraser, I think everyone would like to hear your opinion on what sort of suspension Zac Rinaldo should get.
