ST. PAUL, Minn. - Even with the schedule working against him, Darcy Kuemper has been on a roll to start the season.Kuemper made 26 saves for his third shutout of the season, and defenceman Jared Spurgeon had two assists to lead the Minnesota Wild past the Arizona Coyotes 2-0 on Thursday night. The Wild have played only five games this season and have already endured breaks of six and four days in the first two weeks. But after a slow start, the Wild got second-period goals from Charlie Coyle and Jason Pominville to snap a two-game losing streak. You could tell that we hadnt played in a little while. Itll be nice here to play more games and get into a little bit more of a rhythm, Pominville said. A lot of time off is fun to rest the body but we want to play. Practice is fun, but not that fun.Kuemper has allowed just two goals in four starts, and has all three of Minnesotas victories this season.I thought he was really good. What I really liked was just how hes following the play, Wild coach Mike Yeo said. I just thought he was very involved in the game, and obviously he got rewarded for it.Arizonas Mike Smith entered the game having allowed at least four goals in each of his three starts this season. But he stopped 27 of 29 shots and blanked the Wild for all but a three-minute stretch early in the second period.I was hoping for a shutout. But it was better, Smith said. The outcome is disappointing, but we were in the hockey game at least.Coyle opened the scoring with his second goal of the season, and Pominville made it 2-0 less than four minutes later.Smith stonewalled Zach Parise on a point-blank shot a minute and a half into the second, then smothered Parises wrist shot from the left circle at the end of that shift. But a minute later, Minnesota jumped ahead when Coyle redirected in Spurgeons wrist shot from the high slot. Pominville doubled the lead when he completed a crisp passing play from Spurgeon and Parise by firing a slap shot that beat Smith over his right shoulder.I liked the way that we came out in the second period from the start, Yeo said. We started to get more physically engaged in the game, we started to pressure more, and we started to attack more. Once that happened, I felt like we started to get some momentum.Arizona appeared to have cut its deficit in half early in the third period when Kyle Chipchura slipped a shot past Kuemper, but B.J. Crombeen was in the crease, and the goal was disallowed due to interference.I havent looked at it yet but it looked like he went in the crease, Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. They were pretty definitive on it. Ill have to get a look at it, but its one of those things that you just have to deal with and move on.Minnesotas power play woes continued, as the Wild went 0-for-3 to fall to 0-for-19 to start the season. But the Wilds penalty-killing unit maintained its strong play, blanking Arizona on two power plays. Minnesota has killed 14 of 15 penalties this season. We had a lot of good looks, Spurgeon said of Minnesotas power play. Theyre just not going in for us right now. Weve got to work on it and have got to bury them. That will be a difference in some games. The Coyotes went on the power play with 7:30 to play when Spurgeon flung the puck over the boards in his defensive zone, but the Wilds Matt Cooke had the best scoring chance in the next two minutes as he narrowly missed converting an open-net opportunity with Smith out of position. The Wild looked sluggish after their latest layoff and Arizona outshot Minnesota 6-2 in the opening five minutes. The Coyotes dictated the pace through much of the first period but the goalies kept it scoreless. It was nice just to get out of the first period and not have the light come on behind me, Smith said. Its been a while since that happened.NOTES: Arizona C Martin Hanzal missed the game with a lower-body injury. Coyotes RW David Moss left the game in the second period with an upper-body injury and didnt return. ... Minnesota was down a pair of defencemen as Keith Ballard and Christian Folin sat out because of illness. Phillip Gaines Jersey . Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Prater hit a late field goal to give the Detroit Lions a 16-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in a tough NFC North matchup. Matthew Stafford went 17-for-28 for 153 yards and a touchdown, while Joique Bell totaled 103 combined yards for the Lions (10-4), who moved into a tie with Green Bay for first place in the NFC North thanks to their third win in a row. The Packers lost to the Bills earlier on Sunday, and the Lions currently hold the tiebreaker thanks to a win at home against the Packers in Week 3. Detroit and Green Bay both play on the road next week before they meet up in Green Bay on the final week of the season. Teddy Bridgewater went 31-for-41 for 315 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Vikings (6-8), who had won their previous two coming into the game. Trailing by four, the Lions cut into their deficit on their first touch of the second half, as a 13-play, 74-yard drive was finished off by a 30-yard field goal by Prater. Pass catches of 18 yards from Calvin Johnson and 17 yards by Bell accounted for a large chunk of the yards. Minnesota came back with a long drive that covered 75 yards over 18 plays and ate up 11 minutes, but the team came away empty as Blair Walshs 26-yard field goal was blocked by Jason Jones. Detroit then went on the drive that won the team the game, as Eric Ebron caught a pass for 11 yards and Bell followed with a 15-yard run. Johnson then caught a pass for 23 yards, and the team gained 16 more yards to set up Praters 33-yard field goal for a 16-14 lead with 3:38 to play. Minnesota got the ball back near midfield thanks to a big return from Cordarrelle Patterson, but Patterson fell on a fourth down passing play to give the ball back to Detroit. However, the Vikings forced a punt and got the ball back with 45 seconds, but they were only able to get to midfield and Walshs 68-yard field goal attempt fell well short to end the game. Walsh missed a 53-yard field goal on Minnesotas first possession, and the next three possessions ended in punts before the Vikings put points on the board. Starting at his own 16, Bridgewater found Charles Johnson for 20 yards and later hit Greg Jennings for 26 yards, which Detroit unsuccessfully challenged. On 2nd-and-goal at the 2, Matt Asiata bulled his way in to give the Vikings a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter. After a short possession from Detroit, Bridgewater and Johnson got together for a 40-yard play to get into Detroit territory. On 1st-and-goal at the 8, Bridgewater found Jennings in the flat for a score and a 14-0 lead. Another brief touch by the Lions saw the Vikings get the ball back, but Glover Quin came up with an interception and brought the ball down to the Minnesota 11. Two plays later, Stafford got the ball to Golden Tate and he took it in from seven yards out to make it a 14-7 game with 3:42 to play in the half. Bridgewaters second interception, this one from Darius Slay, gave the Lions the ball back at the Minnesota 32, and Prater hit a 29-yard field goal at time expired to make it a 14-10 game at the break. Game Notes Detroit has at least one interception in 11 straight games ... Bell had 62 yards on 15 carries, and 41 yards on four catches ... GUADALAJARA, Mexico -- Lexi Thompson won the Lorena Ochoa Invitational on Sunday for her second victory in her last four starts, birdieing the final hole to beat Stacy Lewis by a stroke. The 18-year-old Thompson made a 5-foot putt on the par-5 18th, then won when Lewis missed her 5-foot try. "First off, I had like a 50- to 60-footer for the first one, which was interesting getting up there within a few feet," Thompson said. "You know on the second putt, thats what it all came down to thinking I can make it and went up to it confidently. Just knock it in." The third-ranked Lewis, a three-time winner this year, had a 68. "I knew I had to make it," Lewis said about her birdie try on the final hole. "I had a good line on it, just with these greens, those downhill putts are the hardest ones to make. I hit a good putt. I hit it where I wanted to. It just didnt go in." Thompson closed with a 3-under 69 to finish at 16-under 272 at Guadalajara Country Club. She won the 2011 LPGA Navistar Classic at 16, and took the LPGA Malaysia last month for her second tour title. So Yeon Ryu was third at 13 under after a 69. Top-ranked Inbee Park finished fourth at 11 under to wrap up the points-based player of the year award with one event left. She is the first South Korean player to win the award. "I said all year, there should have been at least two or three girls that already won the award, but nobody really did it," said Park, who shot 69. "Its just really hard to believe and Im just very lucky I won." Lewis birdied Nos. 12-14 to take a one-stroke lead, but dropped into a tie with Thompson with a bogey on the par-3 17th. "Stacy is an amazing player," Thompson said. "I knew she could make a run at me any time during that round. When she made the two-shot swing on me, I think on No. 12, it brought it back to all squared. I knew I had to make birdies on top of her because she gets on a roll and she doesnt stop. Shes an amazing player and played great today." Cheap Chiefs Jerseys China . As a follow-up, TSN.ca offers you the opportunity to chime in on all the big issues with our insiders. They promoted infielder Jace Peterson from Double-A San Antonio and right-hander Kevin Quackenbush from Triple-A El Paso.ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - His return from off-season knee surgery still a few days away, Knowshon Moreno sauntered over to the sideline one hot August afternoon in training camp. In front of him were two young running backs having trouble picking up first downs and blitzes. Asked who he thought would win the featured role in the Denver Broncos backfield, Moreno nodded and flashed a sneaky smile, then spun back to the trainers room. Enough said. Neither Ronnie Hillman nor Montee Ball would pry the football from his grasp, something nobodys been able to do since Atlanta linebacker Stephen Nicholas stripped him on Sept. 17, 2012, which resulted in Morenos two-month banishment to the scout team. That penance left Moreno determined "if I ever do get that call again" to let neither the opportunity nor the football slip through his grasp again. Willis McGahees injury gave Moreno that shot at redemption, and hes lived up to that pledge ever since: in 479 touches since that fateful fumble against the Falcons, Moreno has gotten up with the football in his hands all 479 times. "He plays this game in a way that I absolutely love because its every bit of who he is, and he gives you every bit of what he has," Broncos running backs coach Eric Studesville said. "Hes so amped up and hyped up before the game because hes so excited for it and then he plays with that intensity and that energy and that effort." Moreno holds nothing back, not even his tears, which were captured by TV cameras during the National Anthem when the Broncos visited Kansas City last month. Moreno said in those moments before kickoff, he reflects on all the good and the bad things that have happened in his life and in football and how much he appreciates the opportunity to play the game. Thats when the tears flow. "Ive always been that way, high school and in college," Moreno said. "I guess its just my thing, you know? I play with my emotions on my sleeve." Moreno has had his share of ups and downs in the NFL. After replacing McGahee in 2012, he ran for 510 yards and three TDs in the final six games but blew out a knee early in Denvers playoff game against Baltimore. Without him, the Broncos were unable to run out the clock in the fourth quarter behind an undersized Hiillman, which led to their loss to the Ravens in double-overtime.dddddddddddd That prompted the Broncos to draft Ball, the bruising 215-pound Badger who scored an NCAA-record 83 touchdowns at Wisconsin, and Hillman bulked up to 195 pounds in the off-season. While Moreno continued his rehab from his knee injury, Ball and Hillman battled for the No. 1 job but both made too many mistakes to earn the trust of the coaches or Peyton Manning. And while all eyes were on them, Moreno — the Broncos biggest back at 220 pounds — quietly got healthy and brought fresh legs and experience to the equation. This season he became the first running back in team history to top 1,000 yards rushing and 500 receiving, and he scored a career-high 13 TDs. Morenos proficiency at catching the ball out of the backfield proved the best antidote for all the beatings Manning was taking at midseason, when opponents quit defending Denvers record-setting offence with zones in favour of more man coverage, which freed up another pass-rusher to go after the quarterback. Moreno is not only the Broncos best running back at picking up the blitz, but his sure hands keep linebackers busy in coverage or freeze them on play-action, which makes the Broncos, who scored an NFL-record 606 points, all the more dangerous. "He has just been a rock for us back there," said Manning, who praised Morenos uncanny ability to navigate through traffic while also challenging tacklers head on. Moreno has been a pleasant surprise to Manning, who knew what he had in targets Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, Wes Welker and Julius Thomas but spent the off-season wondering what he would have with him in the backfield. "You never know coming off an injury, especially that running back position," Manning said. "Hes been a huge part of our offence this year." Morenos biggest game came at New England in November, when he rushed for 244 yards on 37 carries in a game the Broncos lost 34-31 in overtime. The rematch is Sunday when the Broncos (14-3) host the Patriots (13-4) in the AFC championship with the winner heading for the Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium, about an hours drive from Middletown, N.J., where Moreno grew up. Its one more opportunity hes determined not to let slip away. The football ratings say that the Western Mustangs are the number one college football team in this country. But their coach Greg Marshall says Laval, also undefeated and rated number two, "are the champs until they are knocked out" in his mind. In fact, for the first time since the CIS college football ratings came out, three teams across this country have finished the regular season undefeated. In addition to Western and Laval the Calgary Dinos finished with a perfect 8-0 mark. Western is generally acclaimed as the top school in the nation and certainly in Ontario where there is much competition with Guelph and Queens (both finished at 7-1). Queens and Guelph are in the national top 10 and both lost their only game to Western. Pat Sheahan, the head coach at Queens, told TSN.ca that Western is "way out in front this year. Theyve scored 50 points against all teams this year, their quarterback Will Finch set an all-time CIS passing record and theyve got talent and support. They are deserving of the number one rating." The No. 2 team Laval became perhaps the only team ever to slip from the number one spot to the number two position while scoring 50 points and winning their game. This took place after week four and as CIS P.R. man Michel Belanger told me "Yes, Laval scored 52 points against Sherbrooke but gave up over 30 points in that game. We felt Western deserved the number one rating." Western coach Greg Marshall told TSN.ca "the ratings say we are No. 1 but (to) our team that honour belongs to Laval. They are also undefeated and are the defending champions so until they lose thats how we feel about it. Id love to meet them and the only way that is possible is in the Vanier Cup." Laval plays Sherbrooke at home this weekend and hasnt lost a home game since 2004! Coming in a little bit under the radar, as the expression goes, are the Calgary Dinos. Head coach Blake Nill is on the verge of winning his sixth straight division title. Nill won six straight AUS titles when he was at Saint Marys. From 1999-2003 he took the Huskies to four Vanier Cups in five years, and became the first coach ever to be in a Vanier Cup three consecutive years (2001-03) and winning the Vanier in 2001 and 2002. That has been equalled by Laval coach Glen Constantine. Nill took the Dinos from an 0-8 record in 2006 and after working his recruiting magic has won the league title since 2008. He certainly built a dynasty and plays UBC at home this weekend. "Weve had some good breaks along the way," says Nill. One of the biggest breaks came in the first half of the very first season game when the league MVP Eric Dzwilewski went down for the season and third year man Andrew Buckley, who had seen very little game action, took control and didnt miss a beat. "To have the results that he did under the circumstances that he became the starter is amazing," Nill told me. "His passing completion percentage is around 75 per cent, not too many guys can make that claim in college ball." Calgary hosts UBC in the semifinal. It should be an interesting playoff weekend. Will all three undefeated teams make it? And if the top two teams should advance and meet it will be in Quebec City as Laval hosts the Vanier Cup. Maybe Western coach Greg Marshall will get his wish. After a poor run of form in February in the Premier League, City have reignited their hopes of a top-four spot with three successive victories, including a 3-0 demolition of reigning champions Chelsea on Saturday. They next head to Rafa Benitezs Newcastle and a win would put them three points ahead of fourth-placed Arsenal with four games remaining. And it will be a big relief for manager Manuel Pellegrini to have captain Kompany and winger Sterling back in the squad.Kompany has missed six matches with a calf injury, while Sterling has been out for five games with a groin injury. However, speaking to the media on Monday, Pellegrini did confirm that David Silva (ankle), Samir Nasri (thigh), Gael Clichy (back) and Bacary Sagna (back) would all be unavailable.Kompanys return provides the Chilean boss with a welcome selection headache, with Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi in top form at the back.Pellegrini said: Ive said that in a season where we are fighting for important things, its because we have a good squad.Kompany has been injured so the other defenders have done well, but he will be an important help for the defence. On the prospect of Sterling starting at St James Park, Pellegrini added: Well see, hes coming back from an important injury, well see if he can play some minutes. We need a Champions League spot for next season, and to focus on Real in the semi final.Newcastle are very dangerous, they have good players, St James is difficult place to play. They need the points in their survival battle. I hope we continue as we did on Saturday, being aggressive and trying to win from the beginning. He added: Its not depending on what Newcastle can do. NEW YORK -- The Brooklyn Nets acquired guard Marcus Thornton from the Sacramento Kings for Jason Terry and Reggie Evans on Wednesday, removing two little-used veterans from their aging roster and hoping a younger one can rediscover his scoring touch. Terry came from Boston along with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce but has appeared in just 35 games after a knee injury, averaging 4.5 points on 36 per cent shooting. Evans was a favourite of fans but not coach Jason Kidd, who used him in just 30 of their 51 games. Evans made 56 starts last season and led the Nets with 11.1 rebounds per game, but lost his starting spot when the Nets acquired Garnett, and then fell behind rookie Mason Plumlee in Kidds rotation. Thornton averaged 21.3 points in 23 games with the Kings in 2010-11 after being acquired in a midseason trade with New Orleans. He then led the Kings with 18.7 points per game in 2011-12, but had fallen out of favour under defensive-minded coach Michael Malone, even getting benched at one point to make way for rookie Ben McLemore. "Marcus is a proven scorer in this league," Nets general manager Billy King said in a statement. "He is a young talent who will help us in the backcourt." Thornton, now 26 years old, is averaging just 8.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and one assist in 24 minutes per game this season. He has started 26 of 46 games and is shooting 38 per cent from the floor, including 31 per cent from 3-point range. Its the third move for the Kings since the season started as they rebuild under new owner Vivek Ranadive, general manager Pete DAlessandro and Malone. Sacramento sent Luc Mbah a Moute to Minnesota for Derrick Williams on Nov. 26 and acquired Rudy Gay in a seven-play deal with Toronto on Dec. 9. "Were an unfinished product," DAlessandro said before the Kings hosted Golden State on Wednesday night. "Were just going to continue to try to change and turn it over and try to figure it out until we can get it right. I think change is good when youve lost a lot. You have to change. You always have to change." One of the biggest reasons the Kings made the trade is to give more playing time to McLemore and fellow rookie Ray McCallum. McLemore, the seventh overall pick out of Kansas, made his 27th start Wednesday night. "We have to see these guys play, and not in practice but in NBA games to see what theyre capable of doing so we can make decisions coming in the off-season," Malone said. The Kings, under the former ownership of the Maloof family, signed Thornton to a four-year contract worth about $31 million just before the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season. Thornton is making $8.05 million this season and is due $8.575 million next season. Hell bring some youth to a Nets team that loaded up on veterans in an expensive attempt to make a run at a title this season. But they came out of the All-Star break with a 24-27 record, good for only seventh place in the Eastern Conference. They could still make another move before Thursdays 3 p.m. EST trade deadline, even though they were already slated to pay more than $180 million in salary and taxes this season. This time, though, the Nats hope to stay a little longer. Theyll get that chance when they welcome the San Francisco Giants to Nationals Park for the start of the best-of-five National League Division Series. Washington gave the District of Columbia its first taste of postseason baseball since 1933 in 2012, as the Nationals returned to the playoffs for the first time since 1981 when they were known as the Montreal Expos. Despite having the best record in the league, the Nats bowed out in five games to the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS. A year after missing the playoffs, Washington enters this years playoffs under similar circumstances, as it was an NL-best 96-66 this year and cruised to an NL East title, 17 games in front of both the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets. The Nats also enter the playoffs as hot as anyone, as they won nine of their final 11, 13 of their final 16 games and were 19-8 over the final month of the season. Ive maintained the whole season that I like where we are, outfielder Jayson Werth said. We are a second-half team. We are built for this time of the year. We continue to show it year in and year out that we are going to make a run at the end. We played well up to this point. We got this first step out of the way. San Francisco, meanwhile, advanced to the Division Series with a matter of fact wild card win in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, as Madison Bumgarner pitched a four-hit shutout, Brandon Crawford hit the fourth playoff grand slam in team history and the Giants rolled, 8-0. The Giants have won seven straight playoff elimination games, including five on the road. I think that experience really came into play today, said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. The guys threw out some good at bats. They looked very quiet up there. You want to create those chances and get guys on base, and they were relentless doing that until we got, of course, a big hit from Crawford. Bumgarner (1-0) kept them out of trouble in this one, scattering four hits and a walk while striking out 10. Bumgarner, making his seventh postseason start at the age of 25, was perfect in four of his nine innings. The four hits he gave up were all singles, including two to Josh Harrison. He threw 109 pitches, including 79 strikes. He had it all working tonight, Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. Absolutely a very professional and well-pitched game by him tonight. Now, the downside to playing in the wild card means that Bumgarner wont be available until Game 3 when the series shifts to San Francisco. The Nats had their way with the Giants in 2014, taking five out of seven games. Below we take a look at three keys for each team to move on. WASHINGTON 1. NASTY ROTATION Never mind the Detroit Tigers starting staff, the best rotation in these playoffs resides in the District. Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann, Doug Fister and Gio Gonzalez. You can throw rookie Tanner Roark into that mix, but hell be used out of the bullpen in the first round. The first four are as good as anyone left pitching and like their team they are getting hot at the right moment. Especially Zimmermann, who, of course, threw a no-hitter on the final day of the regular season. Dating back to last Tuesday, and not including starts involving Blake Treinen and Taylor Hill, the rotation allowed a combined two runs in 37 1/3 innings, with 39 strikeouts and four walks. The Nationals rotation also finished the year with the best ERA (3.04) in baseball. 2. SECOND CHANCE FOR STOREN Nobody has a worse taste in their mouths given the way the 2012 postseason went for the Nationals than closer Drew Storen, who allowed the clinching runs to score for the Cardinals in Game 5 of that series. Then, he not only lost his job as the teams closer to Rafael Soriano in 2013, he also had to endure a stint in the minors. This year Storen thrived as a seventh-inning reliever for the Nats until early September, when he replaced the struggling Soriano as the closer and has beeen terrific.dddddddddddd I dont look at it as this big, emotional scar or anything. Its baseball, you know? Youre going to have bad outings. ... Its a matter of moving on, Storen said. Im a different person, and Im a different pitcher. Since that point, Storen saved 10 games without allowing a run in 10 1/3 innings, with 10 strikeouts. Its been fun. I think a lot of it comes down to command, Storen said. Its so crucial to work ahead of the hitters. In the ninth inning, thats really big, especially with some of the one-run leads Ive come into. You really have to work ahead of guys and keep the ball down in the zone, manipulate and make them move and try to miss some barrels. 3. BRYCES TIME TO SHINE A lot is being made of Mike Trouts postseason debut. Well, this might not be Harpers first time in the playoffs, but it might as well be. The 20-year-old megastar managed just three hits in 23 at-bats in that 2012 NLDS. Harper endured an injury-plagued season this year and it showed as he hit just 13 home runs and drove in a mere 32 runs in 100 games. And despite getting over 100 less at bats than he did in 2013, Harper struck out 104 times, 10 more than he did a year ago. Plus he was benched in April by Matt Williams for not running out a ground ball. All that is in the past, though, and all will likely be forgotten if he delivers in October. Trout has certainly passed Harper in terms of being the best young player in the game, but a strong showing here in the postseason could go a long way to making it a two-man race once again. And doesnt baseball need a new face now that Derek Jeter is gone? SAN FRANCISCO 1. VETERAN ARMS The San Francisco Giants have won two of the last four World Series titles thanks to their starting pitching. This time around, though, there is no Matt Cain or Tim Lincecum leading the way. Cain is lost for the season with an elbow injury, while Lincecum, well, hes no longer the pitcher who won a pair of NL Cy Young Awards. The Giants are now led by the 25-year-old Bumgarner, but as we stated earlier he wont be around until Game 3. Luckily, San Francisco has a pair of veteran arms to turn to in Games 1 and 2 in Jake Peavy and Tim Hudson. Peavy has been fantastic (2.17 ERA, 1.04 WHIP) since joining the Giants in a July trade from Boston, but he has not had much success in the postseason, pitching to a ghastly 9.27 ERA in five starts. Hudson, meanwhile, has gotten worse as the season has wore on and was terrible in the second half, going just 2-7 with a 4.73 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. Hes pitched to a 3.46 ERA in 10 games (9 starts) in the playoffs, but hasnt been there since 2010. If they can get a split in D.C., though ... watch out. 2. MICHAEL MORSES HEALTH San Francisco doesnt have a whole lot of power in its lineup and its had a lot less since Mike Morse went down with an oblique injury that caused him to miss all but one game in September. Morse, whose 16 home runs were the second most behind Buster Poseys 22, wasnt on the wild card roster and probably wont be on the NLDS squad either. Not having Morse is even more magnified considering Pablo Sandoval hit a mere .218 with 12 strikeouts and just one homer in 24 September games. Thats not good news for a Giants team that won 40 of their last 43 games in which they have scored at least four runs. San Francisco is going to have to score runs if it wants to win this series. So ... 3. CAN BRANDON CRAWFORD CONTINUE TO MASH? Other than Bumgarner, Crawford stole the show on Wednesday in Pittsburgh, as he became the first shortstop in the history of the postseason to hit a grand slam. With Morse out and Sandoval struggling the Giants may need Crawford to step up his game. He only hit .246 on the season, but entered the playoffs on the strength of a .365 performance (27-for-74) in September, with five doubles, two home runs and 16 RBI. And in case you were wondering, Crawford was a .346 hitter in seven games against the Nats this season. San Francisco is going to have to score runs to win this series. While the Edmonton Oilers game on Saturday versus the Vancouver Canucks wont have an impact on the standings, it will have plenty of meaning for the organization and fans in attendance at Rexall Place. The Oilers will bid farewell to forward Ryan Smyth in his final NHL contest after announcing his retirement on Friday. One of the most popular players in Oilers history, Smyth spent a total of 15 seasons in Edmonton and ranks second on the franchises all-time list with 970 games played. The Alberta native enters Saturdays matchup tied with Hall of Famer Glenn Anderson for the club career mark with 126 power-play goals. The 38-year-old ranks fifth in franchise history with 296 goals, coming in behind a number of legendary players like Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Anderson and Mark Messier, and Smyth is sixth in team annals with 631 points. "I have been truly blessed to play this game for as long as I have and will cherish the memories forever," Smyth said on Friday. "After some difficult discussions over the past week, I felt it was best to make this decision and move on with life after hockey and enjoy every minute I have with my family." Edmonton made Smyth the sixth overall pick of the 1994 draft and he stayed with the club before a memorable trade to the New York Islanders in February of 2007 after the club was unable to come to terms with the forward on a contract extension. The unpopular move was highlighted by Smyths tearful goodbye while thanking the fans and organization. Smyth finished up that season with the Islanders and then spent his next four seasons split with the Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings before returning the Oilers by way of trade in June of 2011. In 1,269 career games, the veteran has totaled 386 goals, 456 assists and 842 points. He has 10 goals and 13 assists in 71 games this season. Smyths farewell should give some added energy to tonights regular-season finale for the Oilers, who are last in the Western Conference with 65 points and just 15-22-3 at home on the season. Edmonton began a season-closing four-game homestand with a win over Anaheim, but has followed with setbacks to Colorado and Los Angeles. The Oilers were blanked 3-0 by the Kings on Thursday. Viktor Fasth stopped 45 shots for the Oilers, including 23 in the third period. However, he was beaten for a goal just 23 seconds into the game and the Oilers were down 2-0 by the end of the first period. "You cant give a Stanley Cup contender the lead that early," said Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins. "Our top line, our best line is on the ice and a real easy assignment and its in our net. It cant happen." Edmonton has lost five of its last seven games and saw forward Sam Gagner exit in the second period with an ankle injury. It has also been a disappointing campaign for the Canucks, who were knocked out of playoff contention on Tuesday and lost for the fifth time in six games with Thursdays 4-2 setback to the Avalanche. David Booth and Henrik Sedin scored for the Canucks, while defenseman Dan Hamhuis had two assists. Jacob Markstrom gave up three goals on 27 shots, making his first start since being acquired from Florida as part of the Roberto Luongo trade on March 4. "We played well. We played hard. I thought Markstrom looked really good," Vancouver head coach John Tortorella said. Thursdays game came one day after former captain Trevor Linden was named the president of hockey operations. President and general manager Mike Gillis was fired on Tuesday. The Canucks went 1-4-0 on a five-game homestand and end the regular season at home versus Calgary on Sunday. The Canucks won their first three meetings with this season with the Oilers by a 12-3 margin, but lost the most recent encounter 4-2 in Vancouver on Jan. 27. Carter-Williams won the NBAs Rookie of the Year Award on Monday after becoming only the third player since 1950-51 to lead all rookies in scoring (16.7), rebounding (6.3) and assists (6.2). Oscar Robertson (1960-61) and Alvan Adams (1975-76) were the others. Despite the performance of their dynamic guard, the Sixers were awful this season. They were 19-73 and tied an NBA record by losing 26 straight games. "Id definitely trade this award to be in the playoffs in a second," Carter-Williams said. "Coaches tell me to watch the playoffs to look at how different the game is and I do see it. Its a whole different season. This game is about winning. I hope I set a positive example about leading your team in a good way no matter what. I hope guys that come in know the core of this team takes things seriously and we want to build something special." Carter-Williams received 104 of a possible 124 first-place votes. The Orlando Magics Victor Oladipo finished second and Trey Burke of the Utah Jazz was third. "Michael made an immediate impact on the court this season, but his dedication, professionalism and contributions to both the organization and the Philadelphia community make him all the more deserving of this award," Sixers owner Josh Harris said in a statement. "This is an incredibly proud moment for the 76ers and one we are thrilled to share with him, the city and our fans." Allen Iverson is the only other player in Sixers history to win the award. The 11th overall pick from Syracuse in last years draft, Carter-Williams is the first player picked 10th or lower to win since Mark Jackson did it in 1987 for New York. "Michael performed and represented the Sixers organization this past season in a manner befittting of the 2013-14 NBA Rookie of the Year," said co-managing owner David Blitzer.dddddddddddd "He never stopped working from the moment he burst onto the national scene in our home opener through the final horn at last game of the season, and we are proud to congratulate him on this well-deserved award." Carter-Williams had a spectacular debut, posting 22 points, 12 assists and nine steals to lead the Sixers to a stunning 114-110 victory over the two-time defending champion Miami Heat. He was the second rookie after Shaquille ONeill to be the Eastern Conference Player of the Week in his first week in the NBA. "By opening night, it was clear to us that Michael belonged," Sixers President Sam Hinkie said. "This award marks a lifetime of hard work. ... We congratulate him on this unique achievement and look forward to helping him put in the work necessary to garner even greater success in the future." First-year coach Brett Brown had enough confidence in Carter-Williams to give him the responsibility of leading the team on the court. They traded away All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday to clear the way for Carter-Williams. With an eye toward the future, the Sixers traded Evan Turner, Spencer Hawes and Lavoy Allen in February. They have a 19.9 per cent chance at getting the No. 1 pick in this years draft and are also owed New Orleans lottery pick -- unless the Pelicans win a top-3 pick. With possibly two first-round selections, Carter-Williams and 2013 lottery pick Nerlens Noel returning from a knee injury, the Sixers could be a contender soon. "When I first got here, I really didnt know what to expect," Carter-Williams said. "I am not a person that trusts a lot of people. My circle is really close, especially when it comes to basketball, because everyone has an opinion. But I have a lot of trust in coach Brown." MILAN, Italy -- Alessandro Matri scored twice on his Fiorentina debut to help his new team win 3-0 at bottom club Catania in Serie A on Sunday. Matri had only scored once in six months for AC Milan but now has more goals for Fiorentina after a brilliant first half. "Today was an afternoon I dreamed about," Matri said. "I really wanted to get back to helping the team. Its been a difficult six months, in which I suffered, and I thank those who were close to me, my family and my girlfriend, I dedicate the goals to them." Fiorentina moved three points behind Napoli in the race for third place and the final Champions League berth after the Naples club were held to a 2-2 draw by 10-man Bologna. Napoli thought it had won after goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Jose Callejon but Rolando Bianchi scored his second of the game in the final minute. In the evening game, Clarence Seedorf got off to a winning start as coach after Mario Balotellis penalty helped AC Milan beat Hellas Verona 1-0. "After the match we all gathered in a circle with our arms around each other. From now on we will always do that, regardless of the result. That way we will all look each other in the face," Seedorf said. "It is an important start and I am happy for this group. Theres a lot of work still ahead of us, but everything is lighter and comes easier when you are winning." Inter Milan lost 1-0 at Genoa for its third defeat in five league matches. In the earlier kickoff, 10-man Lazio fought back after twice trailing to win 3-2 at Udinese. Elsewhere, it was: Chievo Verona 1, Parma 2; Atalanta 1, Cagliari 0; and Sassuolo 0, Torino 2. With Giuseppe Rossi and Mario Gomez injured, Matri was handed his Fiorentina debut days after joining on loan from Milan, and it did not take the former Juventus striker long to have an impact as he set up Fernandez for the opening goal in the 25th minute. Matri got on the scoresheet three minutes later, getting the better of his marker to slide home Manuel Pasquals pass. He doubled his tally four minutes from halftime when Catania goalkeeper Alberto Frison did brilliantly to deny Fernandez but Matri tapped home the rebound. Matri was substituted at the start of the second half as a precaution after picking up a knock. Fernandez almost scored his second of the match on the hour mark but hit the crossbar. It was a disappointing return to the Catania bench for coach Rolando Maran, who had been sacked and replaced by Luigi De Canio in October. Relegation-threatened Bologna had held Lazio to a draw last week and was looking to continue its unbeaten run under new coach Davide Ballardini. It took a surprise lead eight minutes from halftime when Bianchi got in front of Raul Albiol to head in Alessandro Diamantis cross. Napoli strove for the equalizer and its hard work paid off shortly after the hour mark when Higuain smashed home a penalty after Panagiotis Kone bundled over Blerim Dzemaili. Callejon fired Higuains cross into the far corner 10 minutes from time and Napoli looked set to take all three points when Kone was sent off for a second booking four minutes later. However, Bianchi drove home Diamantis corner to snatch a draw. Inter is eight points behind the top four as its miserable run continued. Luca Antonelli was left unmarked to head home a corner seven minutes from time. Inter has won just one of its past eight league matches. Verona is doing well in its first season back in the top flight and is level on points with Inter. Milan is struggling and replaced Massimiliano Allegri with former player Seedorf after last weeks 4-3 loss to Sassuolo. After beating Milan on the opening day, Verona appeared to be heading for a draw at San Siro before Alejandro Gonzalezs needless tackle on Kaka. Balotelli stepped up and fired powerfully into the right side of goal. "It is a victory that we dedicate to Seedorf, the first game is the most difficult," Balotelli said. Udinese is just three points off the drop zone after a third straight defeat. Bologna, Sassuolo and Chievo are all level on 17 points, four more than bottom two clubs Livorno and Catania. VANCOUVER -- Roberto Luongos return to the Canucks net was a less than memorable one on Wednesday night as he allowed four goals in the first 12:24 in a 4-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers. Luongo finished with 14 saves on 18 shots in two periods of work. He was replaced by Joacim Eriksson, who is vying for Vancouvers backup job with fellow Swede Eddie Lack. Eriksson was credited with nine saves. Jordan Eberle had a goal and two assists for the Oilers. Eberle produced his points in the first 7:38 of the game as all of the scoring was completed in the opening period. Martin Marincin, David Perron and Jesse Joensuu also scored for the Oilers. Edmonton goaltender Devan Dubnyk stopped 25 of 26 shots as he played the whole game. Brendan Gaunce, with his second goal in two pre-season games, scored for the Canucks. The Canucks went with several core players among the 10 NHL veterans they dressed, including Daniel and Henrik Sedin and defenceman Kevin Bieksa. Edmontons lineup contained 12 NHL regulars, with Taylor Hall, Nick Schultz and Ryan Smyth among them. Eberle opened the scoring 4:49 into the game as he slid a wraparound in off of Luongo. Then he made the first passes as Marincini and Perron scored on similar long shots 31 seconds apart to put the Oilers up 3-0 before the game was eight minutes old. Joensuu scored Edmontons final goal of the first period on a rebound after Luongo stretched across his crease to make a sensational save on Mark Arcobellos one-timer. Gaunce put the Canucks on the scoreboard just 42 seconds later as he shovelled the puck past Dubnyk, who made his second pre-season appearance. But neither team could score in an uneventful second period and a similarly quiet third. Luongo finished with 14 saves on 18 shots in two periods of work. He was replaced by Joacim Eriksson, who is vying for Vancouvers backup job with fellow Swede Eddie Lack. Eriksson was credited with nine saves. Hoefl-Riesch took full command of the downhill standings that the injured Vonn dominated for the past six years and improved her status as the favourite for the womens downhill at the Sochi Olympics on Feb. 12 -- the race Vonn won at the 2010 Vancouver Games. "The downhill globe is a big goal for me," Hoefl-Riesch said. "The last years it was always impossible because Lindsey was so strong. I already was skiing strong in the last years but there was never a chance, because I was not consistent enough on every single track like Lindsey. "And of course I would love to win the Olympic downhill," Hoefl-Riesch said. "Thats the biggest race in skiing." Julia Roth of Waterloo, Ont., was 44th. Larisa Yurkiw of Owen Sound, Ont., did not start the first run. With her parents and husband in attendance, Hoefl-Riesch won in 1 minute, 17.84 seconds on the Olympia delle Tofane course for the 27th World Cup victory of her career. "I knew that I had to attack a lot with a shortened course and that it would be very tight," Hoefl-Riesch said. "It was really flat light and tricky in a few turns where some girls had big problems. But not me." Hoefl-Riesch said that she tweaked her left knee while landing a jump and that she felt some pain but was not overly concerned. Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein finished second, 0.31 seconds behind, and Nicole Schmidhofer of Austria was third with the No. 39 bib, 0.75 behind. Lara Gut of Switzerland was fourth and Stacey Cook of the United States was fifth as the pair missed out on the podium by 0.01 and 0.03 seconds, respectively. It was the best result this season for Cook, who finished second in two downhills in Lake Louise, Alberta, last season. The victory gave Hoefl-Riesch an 85-point lead over Weirather in the downhill standings after six of eight races, with wins worth 100 points each. In the overall standings, Hoefl-Riesch leads Weirather by 158 points. Hoefl-Rieschs other two wins this season also came in downhill, in Lake Louise. She also has podium results in slalom, super-combined and super-G and credits part of her all-around success to Hermann Maiers former physical trainer, Heinrich Bergmueller, who she began working with in the off-season. "I was also training hard the summers before but its a new way with a new coach and some things are different," she said. "I feel much stronger this year and with my recovery for all disciplines.&" Vonn ended her season recently to tend to her right knee, which she first injured in a horrific crash at last years world championships in Schladming, Austria.dddddddddddd Hoefl-Riesch is friendly with Vonn but she wasnt about to take anything away from her own success just because her rival is out now. "Thats skiing," said Hoefl-Riesch, who had four serious injuries in 2005. "I was not at the Olympic Games in 2006 and no one was asking the winner of the medals there if they miss me. So a medal is a medal and a title is a title, no matter who is competing and who is not." Vonn used to spend Christmas at Hoefl-Rieschs home in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and they remain in contact. "We were just writing a little on WhatsApp a little bit," Hoefl-Riesch said. "I think shes doing OK and I hope that we can talk on the phone before I go to Sochi." Due to overnight snow and difficulty preparing the course, the start was delayed for half an hour and the course was shortened slightly -- chopping off about 20 seconds of racing. With softer snow and flat light, it was a sharp change in conditions from Wednesdays only training run, which was held under bright sunshine. Conditions improved for later starters as a tailwind moved in. The wind helped Schmidhofer, whose only other podium finish also came in Cortina, having finished second in a super-G last year. "I was hoping for a tailwind," Schmidhofer said, before she addressed her chances of being selected for Sochi. "I hope the coaches look at my result." The revised start put skiers directly into the courses best-known section, the Tofane schuss -- a long straightaway between two high rock outcroppings. "I generally do OK when there are straight shots out of the gate like that," Cook said. "So that was a little confidence booster to kick out of the gate, get on my skis and not have to do too much and then get into it. And then I just tried to not ski a perfect line but ski perfect body position and really attacking. And it seems to have been fast." Elisabeth Goergl, the Austrian who won a super-G on Thursday, lost control after hitting a gate and slammed into the safety padding at full speed. But she got right back up, skied down and said she was not injured. Another downhill is scheduled for Saturday, followed by a second super-G on Sunday to round out a series of four races in four days. Two of the races were originally scheduled for last weekend in Cortina but were wiped out due to heavy snowfall. The other two were moved from Garmisch due to a lack of snow in the German resort. BARCELONA, Spain -- Cristiano Ronaldo scored two long-range goals to help Real Madrid rout Osasuna 4-0 on Saturday and stay in the Spanish league title chase while resting several first-choice players for its European clash at Bayern Munich. With Gareth Bale recovering from the flu and Karim Benzema on the bench, all of Madrids attack went through Ronaldo on the left flank. And the Ballon dOr winner didnt disappoint by unleashing two similar blasts after cutting inside to put the ball on his right boot and lift his league-leading tally to 30 goals through 35 rounds. Madrid provisionally closed to within three points of leader Atletico Madrid before it visits Valencia on Sunday, when Barcelona, one point behind Madrid, hosts Villarreal. Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti also gave valuable rest to defender Pepe and midfielder Xavi Alonso to prepare for its visit to Bayern on Tuesday in the second leg of their Champions League semifinal. Madrid won the first leg 1-0. "Everything he tried turned out well for us," Ancelotti said about Ronaldo. "We could rest some players and played a good game, even if it wasnt a very intense one." Elsewhere, Getafes 1-0 win over Malaga condemned last-place Real Betis to relegation even before it fell 1-0 at home to Real Sociedad, while Rayo Vallecano scored three times in the second half for a 3-0 win at 10-man Granada. Osasuna lined up to provide Madrid a guard of honour before the match as the hosts paraded their recently won Copa del Rey trophy at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Ronaldo then went to work chalking up his 29th league goal in the sixth minute when he unleashed a trademark blast from outside the area that took a slight deflection off defender Damia Abella before falling just inside the far upright. He looked to get his teammates involved, and set up scoring chances for Sergio Ramos, Marcelo and Alvaro Morata. But it fell to Ronaldo to start the seconnd half as he had the first, with Osasunas outclassed defence letting him again dribble to near the elbow of the area before he launched a shot into the top corner of the net in the 52nd.dddddddddddd "Both goals came at the start of each half and that complicated things for us," Osasuna coach Javi Gracia said. "They are both more merit of Ronaldo than my defences fault. Its true Damia touches the first strike and that gives it an effect, but the second shot is unstoppable." Sergio Ramos headed in a third goal in the 60th and Ronaldo went to the bench seconds later to an ovation from the crowd. Dani Carvajal headed home Isco Alarcons lobbed pass to cap the lopsided victory in the 83rd. Osasuna, which lost Raoul Loe and Emiliano Armenteros to injuries, remained three points above the relegation zone along with Getafe. Forward Adrian Colunga scored what proved to be the winner seven minutes into the game at Getafe from a pass by Ciprian Marica, who left his side a man down from the 37th for a second yellow card. But Malaga couldnt take advantage of the extra man and itself lost a player when Marcos Angeleri was sent off for a second booking in the 76th. "This victory is huge," Getafe coach Cosmin Contra said. "You saw team spirit today. We are still alive." Sociedad added to Betis misery by winning thanks to Carlo Velas 54th-minute penalty kick after Juan Carlos Perez fouled him in the area. Sociedad strengthen its hold on sixth place and cemented its Europa League berth for next season. Rayo rose into ninth place with only one loss in its last 10 matches. Rayo held Granada in check in the first half before Yacine Brahimis dismissal for a second yellow card in the 51st turned the match in the visitors favour. All the matches observed a minute of silence before kickoff for Barcelonas former coach, Tito Vilanova, who died on Friday after a battle with cancer. SEATTLE - Fireworks erupting and yellow confetti filling the air, Landon Donovan and his Los Angeles teammates accepted the Western Conference championship trophy.Im sort of just in this moment right now, Donovan said. I just want to prepare myself for one last week and do everything I can to help this team win. I really want to go out a champion.Yes, Donovan has one more game to play before he calls it a career, the MLS Cup final next weekend on his home field.Juninhos tiebreaking road goal early in the second half sent the Galaxy to the MLS Cup final after their conference final against the Seattle Sounders ended 2-2 on aggregate on Sunday night.Seattle won the second-leg 2-1, but road goals were used as a tiebreaker in the MLS Cup playoffs for the first time this season and Los Angeles used it to the full advantage following a 1-0 win in the first-leg last weekend. After surrendering goals to Seattles Brad Evans and Clint Dempseys in the first 32 minutes, Juninhos goal was the difference and will keep Donovans career alive for one more game as the Galaxy seek their fifth MLS title. It was Juninhos first goal since Sept. 21, 2013 — also against Seattle — and put Los Angeles in the final against New England next Sunday. It was a matter of grinding it out, Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said. This was not going to be easy by no means and it wasnt.Donovan acknowledged for the first time seeing the end of his career as reality when the Galaxy trailed 2-0 at halftime and 2-1 in the series. In the few minutes I did have at halftime to ponder a little bit I wanted to make sure this wasnt it, Donovan said.Seattle was attempting to reach the MLS Cup final for the first time in franchise history and the Sounders appeared headed that way after an exciting first 45 minutes where their top players were at their best. Evans goal in the 25th minute pulled Seattle even on aggregate and Dempseys first goal of the playoffs put the Sounders in front. But needing a perfect defensive effort in the second half to hold the lead, the Sounders failed to clear a corner kick from danger in the 54th minute. Juninhos shot from outside the box beat Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei and deflected in off the post. Donovan, who sent in the corner kick, and Los Angeles defender Omar Gonzalez were given assists on the goal.Seeking a goal in the closing minutes Seattle pushed nearly everyone forward into the attack. Andy Rose nearly scored from a difficult angle near the end line in the 84th minute. Dempseys half-volley in the final minute before stoppage time sailed over the crossbar for a goal kick. The Sounders never got a clear scoring chance on Los Angeles goalkeeper Jaime Penedo as the Galaxy defence did its part in congesting Seattles opportunities. It was a crushing result for Seattle, which was attempting to become the first team in league history to win the MLS Cup, Supporters Shield and U.S. Open Cup in the same season. It looked promising for Seattle early. After a disjointed first 25 minutes, Evans goal immediately opened up chances for Seattle.Dempsey was the instigator in Seattle taking the lead, keeping alive the play from the ground, then collecting a deflected cross and beating Penedo. Dempsey raced to the Seattle bench and jumped into the arms of his teammates, putting the Sounders ahead on after just 32 minutes, but the final celebration belonged to Los Angeles. Our league decides that the MLS Cup winner is the top team. But thats a mountain we havent climbed yet, Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said. I thought this could be the year we could climb that mountain. Tanner Lee Jersey .ca. "Canada," Bolland said with a smile. "Is that a question?" One day earlier, though, fellow Toronto Maple Leafs centre Nazem Kadri wasnt so sure his home and native land could pull off the win against the United States in the semi-finals of the Olympic hockey tournament. "I want to say Canada, but to be honest with you, the U.S. looks better," Kadri, a native of London, Ont., said. "We dont know if Naz is Canadian or American," Bolland, from Mimico, Ont., said with a chuckle. "We dont know what he is or who hes cheering for. He could be cheering for the Belarusians." Roommate Turmoil The North American rivalry has many fault lines throughout the Leafs dressing room even though a vast majority of the players – 20 in total – are Canadian. The issue: two of the key players on Team USA are also two-thirds of Torontos top line: Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk. The man who centres that line in the NHL, Reginas Tyler Bozak, may be the Leaf who is most torn. After all, Bozak is close friends with Kessel and actually lives with the Leafs leading scorer. "Thats a tough question for me to answer," Bozak admitted when asked where his loyalties lie. "Ive got my two wingers on the U.S. and Im Canadian so I guess Im cheering for both. I just hope Phil and JVR play really well and maybe Canada wins. I dont know. "Its going to be an exciting game to watch, for sure. I really cant make any predictions. I dont know. The U.S. has been playing great. Canadas kind of snuck by with a few wins, buut every games different and it should be a fun one to watch.dddddddddddd" Another set of roommates are also at odds over the game and are actually putting their money where their mouthes are. Defencemen Morgan Rielly and Jake Gardiner, from Vancouver and Minnetonka, MN respectively, have placed a friendly wager on the game. "I cant tell you what it is," Rielly said. "Hes overconfident. I think Team Canada will be fine." Most Leafs, however, were trying to take the diplomatic approach with head coach and Sudbury, Ont. native Randy Carlyle, acknowledging the semi-final showdown "was pulling your heart strings in different directions." The Diplomatic Approach "We hope and wish our players all the luck in the world as far as an organization," said Carlyle, "but I am Canadian." "I hope that Phil and JVR do well," said captain Dion Phaneuf, who hails from Edmonton and was invited to Hockey Canadas orientation camp in the summer, "so Im in the middle, thats for sure. Any time you have teammates competing, you want them to do well, but Im Canadian and I have lots of respect for Hockey Canada." What everyone can agree on is that Kessel and van Riemsdyk are having a much better Sochi experience than Nikolai Kulemin, who was the other Leaf taking part in the Winter Games. "Nobody asks questions about how youre going to feel about Nikolai Kulemin coming back and thats a tough one," said Carlyle. "Host country and the way their tournament unravelled, hes part of our hockey club and weve got to find a way to build him back up and get him going again." HOUSTON -- Houston coach Gary Kubiak collapsed leaving the field at halftime of the Texans game Sunday night against Indianapolis and was taken by ambulance to a hospital. Kubiak hunched over and dropped to his knees at the 24 yard line and was immediately surrounded by medical personnel. He was lifted off the field on a stretcher and taken by cart to the ambulance. The Texans didnt say what was wrong with Kubiak, but did say he didnt have a heart attack. The team said the 52-year-old coach, a former NFL quarterback who calls the teams plays, was conscious and was with his family as he was taken to the hospital. "He had an episode; he was light-headed and dizzy," Houston general manager Rick Smith said in an interview on NBC. "He was evaluated by a number of specialists ... he is awake and coherent." Defensive co-ordinator Wade Phillips took over as coach. Up 21-3 when Kubiak collapsed, the Texans unraveled in the second half, falling 27-24 for their sixth straight loss after opening the season 2-0 with Super Bowl hopes. "We have to assess ... obviously, theres a lot of info," Smith said. "Hopefully, Gary will be back with us tomorrow." Kubiaks collapse came a day after Denver Broncos coach John Fox was hospitalized in North Carolina as he awaits aortic value replacement surgery. The 58-year-old Fox will have surgery in a few days and will miss several weeks while recuperating. Fox had been told earlier about his heart condition and was hoping to put off the operation until February. As part of his trip to North Carolina on a bye week, he met with his cardiologist in Raleigh and was told to seek medical attention immediately if he felt any discomfort. On Saturday, Fox became dizzy playing golf near his off-season home in Charlotte and was taken to a hospital, where tests revealed he couldnt wait any longer to have the surgery. In college, Minnesota coach Jerry Kill took a leave of absence last month so he could better manage and treat his epilepsy. He has had five seizures on game day in his two-plus seasons with the Golden Gophers. Kubiak has long been known as a top offensive coach, mentoring quarterbacks in Denver under Mike Shanahan and now Matt Schaub -- and Case Keenum -- in Houston. Kubiak has had no known public health problems. Kubiak was hired in 2006, along with general manager Rick Smith, after the Texans finished a franchise-worst 2-14. Smith spent 10 years with Kubiak while the coach was offensive co-ordinator of the Broncos. Smith was Denvers defensive assistant for four seasons before moving into the front office for his last six years with the Broncos. The pair has helped transform the Texans, which began play in 2002, from league laughingstock to contender. The team went 6-10 in their first year and 8-8 in each of the next two seasons. Expectations were high in 2010 after Houston finished at 9-7 for its first winning record in 2009. But the Texans instead fell to 6-10, which led to many fans calling for Kubiaks firing. His original contract was due to expire after the 2010 season, but owner Bob McNair has stepped up to keep Kubiak and defended him several times amid the bumps. Among recent departures were assistant head coach Alex Gibbs (for Seattle) and offensive co-ordinator Kyle Shanahan went to join his father, Mike, in Washington. Kubiak hired former Denver offensive co-ordinator Rick Dennison to replace Shanahan and former Atlanta offensive co-ordinator Greg Knapp to become Houstons quarterbacks coach. Dennison worked on the Broncos staff during Kubiaks 11 years as Denvers offensive co-ordinator, and Knapp coached Schaub for three seasons with the Falcons. The highest-profile assistant brought to Houston was Phillips, the veteran son of the late Bum Phillips and a former head coach in Denver, Buffalo and Dallas. Last year, the Texans announced contract extensions for both Smith and Kubiak, rewarding them for taking the team to the playoffs last year for the first time. Kubiaks three-year agreement has him under contract through 2014. McNair said at the time he offered Kubiak a four-year deal, but the coach preferred to make it for three. Kubiak made his mark as Denvers offensive co-ordinator under Shanahan, winning two Super Bowls. An eighth-round pick out of Texas A&M, he spent nine years as John Elways backup. He finished his career 4-1 as a starter, all in emergency relief of Elway. Dorian ODaniel Chiefs Jersey . TORONTO - While the final verdict will come on the field, the business side of Toronto FCs ongoing rehaul is probably as good as it gets given the circumstances. The arrival of U.S. international striker Jozy Altidore and Italian playmaker Sebastian Giovinco, whose signing is expected to be made official at a news conference Monday, means that star midfielder and team lynchpin Michael Bradley is surrounded by young, committed talent locked up for the next four years.Altidore is 25. Bradley and Giovinco are 27.Real Betis defender Damien Perquis, a 30-year-old French-born Poland international, remains on the Toronto radar.Jermain Defoe is back in England, no longer a talented but confusing distraction looking to go home. On the financial front, there has been confusion over the exact nature of the Altidore-Defoe swap between Sunderland and Toronto. While Toronto portrayed the deal as a swap with cash considerations, Sunderland told a different story. Its a straight player-for-player swap, no transfer fee involved, a Sunderland spokesman told The Canadian Press.Asked about terms of the transfer, Toronto GM Tim Bezbatchenko told a news conference introducing Altidore on Friday that he was not permitted to disclose the details. The Canadian Press has learned the deal is slightly more complicated than the pithy Sunderland summary.Toronto gets two friendlies for free. And a source confirmed there is a bonus system tied into the number of games played by Altidore and Defoe for their new clubs. With Altidore expected to miss Toronto games during the Gold Cup slated for July 7-26 — Toronto has four league games scheduled in July — and Defoe facing Cup as well as league play, Toronto expects to come out the better of that deal. The friendlies and bonus system are expected to net Toronto US$3 million. And there are an estimated savings of $9 million on the cost of Defoe versus Altidore over the next three years. The MLS Players Union listed Defoes salary at $6.18 million last season. A source says Altidores base figure in Toronto starts with a four. With Giovinco joining Altidore and Bradley as designated players, it looks like Brazilian striker Gilberto will be the odd man out unless something changes. Clubs are currently allowed three DPs although there is the hope that may go up to four, possibly with a variation of the young DP designation.Since Giovinco is approaching the end of his contract, Toronto does not have to pay a transfer fee. It also means the Italian wont be available to Major League Soccer until July 1.Thanks to that delay, Torontos payroll will be a tad less in 2015 than 2014. Defoe plus Gilberto ($1.2 million last season) is more than Altidore and a half-season of Giovinco. The numbers will be much higher in 2016 but TFC hopes an expanded, improved BMO Field will help pay for the bigger ticket. There are other caveats. Its become clear in recent months that MLS, facing worldwide competition including leagues with better credentials, has to over-pay to get top talent to come to North America.Defoes original transfer fee to MLS was a reported $10 million. Altidore reportedly Sunderland cost about the same. But given Altidores recent scoring slump, he would likely carry a smaller price-tag today that Defoe, a proven Premier League goal-scorer. Toronto also had a lucrative cash offer from another team on the table.Heres guessing that if Toronto could have unloaded Defoe for more and bought Altidore for less in separate transactions, it would have done so.Sunderland wanted more production up front. Toronto needed to unload Defoe and get a replacement striker. Hence the deal. And Bradley, who is clearly driving the TFC bus these days, was on board for Altidore. That should be good news for TFC fans given Bradleys statement last November. The goal here is to not just scrape through a season and maybe make the playoffs and maybe not on the last day, Bradley said. Yeah, we want to make the playoffs but theres much more to it. And to do that, to get to where we want to be, we need more good players and we need more winners, leaders, competitors — guys who come in every day ready to spill everything they have into it.___Follow @NeilMDavidson on Twitter Bernie Parent Jersey . Somehow, moves not made before the window closed ended up dwarfing the moves that were consummated. Gareth Bales big money transfer to Real Madrid was a headline maker, but with the move inevitable weeks prior, the hysteria was muted to a degree. Mesut Ozils last minute shock move to Arsenal created a stir, but the Gunners title credentials are very much still up in the air, even with Ozil. The biggest headlines Monday came out of Old Trafford. The failure of Manchester United to make a significant splash (not named Marouane Fellaini), despite the need for strengthening and the financial wherewithal to do so, left an early stain on the immediate post-Ferguson era and raised questions about what kind of hands the club are now in. It wasnt just about whom they failed to land, but how it went down that drew widespread criticism. Uniteds transfer window dealings has been called farcical and incompetent in the past few days. Use whatever descriptor you like; vice-chairman Ed Woodward and manager David Moyes didnt live up to the lofty standard of their predecessors. In very un-Ferguson/Gill fashion, the duo left important dealings too late in the window, failing to display the confident, composed and controlled demeanor and way of doing business accustomed to the great Manchester United. The failures have been dealt with at length, from imposters, to misunderstanding of Spanish tax law, to not having a clear blueprint how to attract top talent to Old Trafford. The term laughing stock is a bit much. Inadequate fits the bill. To advance the conversation, the more relevant issue now is how United puts the past two months of wavering behind them, while ridding questions pertaining to the standing of the club. To that end, United have nothing to worry about. Yes, Im daring to tell you Manchester United will be just fine. Shocking, isnt it. A club with a history of success, top players, and record earnings will be okay. The negative headlines are temporary. In the immediate world of Twitter and instant analysis and often times sloppy reporting, narratives are built up and torn down at an incredible rate. Uniteds failure Monday and the weeks prior played into the sky is falling narrative. The sky is just fine in Manchester. Rainy, but fine. Lets give it a couple weeks, if United come out on top in the Manchester derby two weeks from now, criticism will be muted. Not of the process, Woodward and Moyes have much to learn, but its the play on the field, the results that matter. It can be suggested Uniteds results over the years covered up inefficiencies. Since the transfer window came to be in 2003, United have spent less than Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, and even Spurs. Yet, United have won four more trophies than its nearest competitor Chelsea, and three more league titles. The purchase of quality and fit, not price tag has been decisive. Fergusons backroom staff grew together, sharing similar vision, getting the most of what theyve had at their disposal. The New York Yankees comparison only holds true, as the Bronx Bombers, despite their spending, are able to cultivate young talent as well. The system of recruitment has been far from perfect (Bebe, anyone?) even under Ferguson. Sir Alex failed to bring in proper centre midfield players to play along side Michael Carrick since he brought Owen Hargreaves to Old Trafford in 2007. Saying you need to strengthening a position is much easier said than finding the right player to fit the plan. Moyes plan is incomplete and it shouldnt surprise, judging by the lack of originality and flexibility in his starting XI through three weeks, Moyes is still figuring out what he has in his squad. In the meantime, hes playing it safe and going for consistency. Not trying to defend the Scotsman, but the learning curve is steep. Hes only been on the job since July 1. The identity will come and suitable players will follow. The bigger concern is the credentials of Woodward to execute in the transfer window. Bean counters should stick to sponsorships, not navigating through the murky waters of dealing with agents and shrewd negotiators on the transfer front. The suggestion United may need a Director of Football post-Ferguson is well warranted. Perhaps the job description at Old Trafford dictates more compartmentalization – something the club was able to get away without under the watchful eye of Fergguson.dddddddddddd United was his baby, now the club is all grown up, and more complex as ever. Woodward should stick to growing the brand. Let football people make football decisions. As for the immediate future, United has as good of a chance to win the title as any of their true Premier League competition and there is no reason to believe another deep run in the Champions League cannot be achieved. This is the same team, plus Fellaini, that ran away with the league a year ago and were an ominous Nani red card away from dispatching Real Madrid in the Champions League. Fellaini is a top pick up for United, no matter how you slice it. He may not have a marquee name like Neymar or Ozil, but hes the type of versatile player in the middle of the park United has desperately needed. Fellaini has size (64 1/2), strength and is entering his prime at 25 years of age. United has often times been bossed in central midfield by the likes of Yaya Toure. Spurs gave all kinds of fits to United last season and have continued to strengthen the position. Fellaini is comfortable in a defensive midfield role, as well as playing well forward off the striker creating fits with his size. Moyes can use Fellaini in various roles depending on the occasion. His 11 goals and six assists a year ago are a testament to his game changing ability. United may have overpaid for Fellaini, they may have not landed a second midfielder and approaches for other top names went for naught. However, this team is still good enough to see out this transitional period while maintaining their high standard. Many speculate Moyes will have to buy in January. Ironically enough, Sir Alex Ferguson always said January wasnt the time to do business, with transfer rates inflated and a lack of value in the market. Before the window re-opens, lets see what Moyes can do. Lets see what Kagawa can do with a run in the team. Lets see Rooney and van Persie continue to grow together. Lets see what Zaha can do, when given a chance. And lets see how Fellaini does on a bigger stage with a team of top talent around him. Its now Moyes turn to makes the headlines, not transfer rumours, dealings, and disappointments. - Everton has been widely credited for their work in the transfer window. The club left it late before bringing in James McCarthy from Wigan, and Gareth Barry and Romelu Lukaku on loan. Perhaps it was intentional, driving up the price for Fellaini at the last minute. Regardless, pressure is now on manager Roberto Martinez. Many pundits have said Martinez is over-rated. I dont agree with that sentiment. Everton hasnt been entirely unimpressive through three draws in three matches. Much of it comes down to a lack of goal scoring, and the hope is Lukaku proves a vast improvement over the misfiring Nikica Jelavic. - Got to hand it to Liverpool – a perfect record through three matches is the teams best start in nearly 20 years. And on top of that, they have yet to concede a goal. The play of Daniel Sturridge has been the highlight, and Coutinho has had his moments. But other than those, the team has been efficient, yet not spectacular. - Thats a testament to the tactics of Brendan Rodgers and the commitment to team shape and approach. Most noticeably, Steven Gerrard has taken up a much deeper, holding role in the midfield. Gerrard is basically sitting on top of the back four, maintaining the shape defensively and quarterbacking the attack. Hes no longer the influential player getting up in the attack. Gerrards new role suits the team better. The loan move for Victor Moses could prove to be a shrewd piece of business, filling a need. - Match-day three top performers: Nathan Redmond (Norwich City), Hatem Ben Arfa (Newcastle), Jason Puncheon (Crystal Palace), David Marshall (Cardiff City), Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal) - Worst performance: Fulham, entire squad - If they only had a proper striker: West Ham - Under the radar transfer moves to watch: Peter Odemwingie to Cardiff City, Barry Bannan to Crystal Palace, James McCarthy to Everton - Good Game, Good Effort of the Week: Hull City. The thinking at the time was Clowney could have already been promised he would be selected first overall by the Houston Texans, therefore negating any need to meet with any other teams. The plot took another twist this week. According to a report from ESPN, Clowney has met with the Atlanta Falcons. Its unclear if he has or will participatte in any drills, or if the two sides are just meeting.dddddddddddd. The thinking here isnt that Clowney may now fall out of the first overall pick, but rather the Falcons could be interested in trading up to the first pick to get Clowney. Earlier reports suggested the Falcons could be looking to trade up and that they are interested in Clowney. It could all just be pre-draft smokescreens, or Roger Goodell could first head to the podium May 8th not to announce the first overall pick, but rather to announce a trade. THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Bernhard Langer won the Champions Tours Insperity Invitational for the third time, closing with a 1-under 71 on Sunday for a one-stroke victory over Fred Couples. Langer finished at 11-under 205 at The Woodlands to become the 10th 20-time winner on the 50-and-over tour. The 56-year-old German player also won the 2007 event at Augusta Pines and successfully defended his title in 2008 at The Woodlands. He opened this season with a victory in Hawaii. "Im hoping to add to that number," Langer said. "I hope Im not done yet. Im very blessed to have won 20 times in 6 1/2 years. Its been a great run and a wonderful achievement. I just feel like Im playing some of my best golf in my career." Couples, the former University of Houston player who won the 2010 event, finished with a 67. He won in March in Newport Beach, California. "On a golf course as hard as this, you cant really play relaxed golf," Couples said. "You have to pay attention to what youre doing. I didnt hit enough good shots to shoot a lot lower to catch Bernhard, although I got close to him." Colin Montgomerie was third at 9 under after a 70. His best finish on the tour is second in March in Newport Beach. The Scot had no complaints about his finish. "If youre second, third to Couples and Langer, youre doing OK," Montgomerie said. The 26-year-old from Germany, who fell from ninth in the world in 2011 to 177th two years later, capped a stunning run to the Family Circle Cup title on Sunday, Petkovics first win in three years. She outlasted Jana Cepelova 7-5, 6-2 in the finals. "I just wanted to get back to why I started playing tennis, because I had fun playing it and because I love the sport," said Petkovic, whose progresses was slowed by several injuries that cost her much of 2012. The climb back was painful at times. Petkovic wanted to quit the game after falling in French Open qualifying last year and wondered if shed ever feel success at the sport again. So she decided to play for fun and not for the wins. "I just needed to remind myself and it came together this week, and Im very thrilled about that," she said. Petkovic entered this one seeded 14th, ranked 40th in the world and with few expectations about her first clay-court event of the season. Instead, Petkovics powerful forehand and grind-it-out mindset helped her oust three straight top 10 seeds in No. 4 Sabine Lisicki, No. 9 Lucie Safarova and No. 6 Eugenie Bouchard on the way to the finals. Petkovic used that same formula against Cepelova, a rising 20-year-old from Slovakia competing in her first WTA final. Cepelova led 5-4 and was a point away from capturing the first set. But Petkovic rallied to win that game and begin a run of eight in a row to take control of the match. "I have to let loose and play like I can," she told herself. Petkovic was energized after winning the crucial game and quickly broke serve to move in front. She took the set a game later and continued her run to build a 5-0 lead that Cepelova could not overcome. For Petkovic, the victory was more gratifying than her two other career WTA wins because of all her struggles. This "is a different feeling," she said. "Now, Im much more grateful. Its more rewarding." Petkovic dropped to the ground when Cepelovas final shot landed out of play. She jogged to the net to hug her opponent, waved to the crowd and did a celebration dance as fans applauded.dddddddddddd She let her fun side shine through all week. She joked in postgame comments she might get a bit crazy on the flight back home, dancing with flight attendants and drinking champagne from her latest trophy. "Im going to have champagne and I dont even drink champagne," she said. "But Im going to have it for the heck of it." Petkovic earned $120,000 for her third career WTA victory, which was her first since winning in Strasbourg in 2011. Petkovics victory closed a week of surprises at the Family Circle Tennis Center. Only one of the tournaments top 10 seeds made it through to the final four and it was the first time a WTA tournament included three semifinalists 20 years old or younger since Amelia Island in 2008. Cepelova had a stunning run of her own, topping world No. 1 Serena Williams on Tuesday night to set the stage for plenty more unexpected results. Cepelova became the Family Circle Cups first unseeded finalist since Elena Vesnina in 2011. Cepelova didnt expect a long visit here, arriving without her coach, trainers and hitting partners. She typically ordered room service at the hotel and had to scrape around to find hitting partners to warm up before matches. "Before the tournament, if somebody told me youll be in the tournament finals I would not believe them," Cepelova said with a smile. "But it was a really nice week." Cepelova is also projected to move up some 30 spots in the rankings to around 50th in the world when the new list comes out next week, the WTA said. Petkovic won the title in her second appearance here. She had reached the round of 16 last year, but had to withdraw from a match against Caroline Wozniacki. She was on the phone with her father, Zoran, after the win. Father and daughter now have Palmetto State success in common. Zoran Petkovic was one of the leading singles players at the University of South Carolina in the early 1980s. He told his daughter stories of how Americans on campus loved wearing "cowboy boots and blue jeans," she recalled, laughing. "He was very happy, very emotional," Andrea Petkovic said of their phone call. "I dont know if he was tearing up, though." SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Challenged for the first time under Major League Baseballs expanded replay system, umpires got it right. The umps went 3 for 3 on Monday as MLB tried out the new format at three spring training games. The first test came at 3:06 p.m. EST in Fort Myers, Fla., after first base umpire Fieldin Culbreth ruled Toronto shortstop Munenori Kawasakis throw pulled Jared Goedert off the bag in the sixth inning. "Im not too sure that youre not right here," Culbreth said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons told him, "but since we havent done it before, lets go take a look." Culbreth answered: "OK. Thats what its for." After 2 minutes, 34 seconds, replay umpire Brian ONora relayed his call by headset, confirming that Minnesota batter Chris Rahl was safe. During the wait, Rahl said he realized he perhaps was part of history. "Its kind of funny. I was thinking, Is this the first one?" he said. ONora made the final ruling from a satellite truck outside the stadium. During the regular season, umpires on the field will check with the replay booth in New York, where an MLB umpire will make the final call. Later in the game, Culbreth rotated and took a turn in the truck, confirming another safe call at first base. "Im looking at this thing as, this is the future of the game. And Im going to treat these games here the same way that Im going to treat them during the regular season," Culbreth said. In the eighth inning, Doug Bernier of the Twins was called safe on a close play at first. As Culbreth studied the replay, the ballpark sound system played a Rolling Stones song with the familiar lyric, "I cant get no satisfaction." The call was confirmed, Bernier was safe. Extra replay also was in place for two games in Arizona -- the Los Angeles Angels vs. Arizona Diamondbacks in Scottsdale and the Chicago Cubs against Milwaukee in Phoenix. Each team in the majors will have at least five exhibition games with the new system in place. In January, owners approved the use of additional video replay to review most calls other than balls-and-strikes. Previously, umpires could only go to replay to review home runs and boundary calls. Moments after the first replay call, Angels manager Mike Scioscia wasted little time in using his challenge. In the top of the second, Luis Jimenez of the Angels tried to steal second. Catcher Bobby Wilsons throw was high but second base umpire Bill Miller ruled that Aaron Hill tagged the runner out. Scioscia bounded out of the dugout and charged toward Miller to argue, just like managers always have done. Instead, though, he chose to use his challenge. After two of the umpires made a quick visit to the Angels dugout to communicate with the replay umpire, the call was upheld. "We werent trying to make a mockery out of it," Scioscia said of using the challenge so soon. "We thought it was a pretty close play." There was only one angle available with the limited camera work of a spring training telecast. "If we have 15 angles of that," Scioscia said, "theres a possibility it gets reversed." That review took 2:31. Since he lost the challenge, Scioscia had no more. "I dont think its going to take much time in the logistics. That will smooth out," he said. "As far as the strategy of it, thats going to take a lot. It might be something you win, but you know you need that challenge to save the big play somewhere." Twins manager Ron Gardenhire and Arizonas Kirk Gibson did not use their challenge. Neither did Cubs manager Rick Renteria nor the Brewers Ron Roenicke. Gibson said he thought about contesting a close play when Paul Goldschmidt nearly beat out a grounder but said he decided it was 50-50 and not worth it. "I think its going to be a lot more complicated than we thought," Gibson said. "We had a lot of conversation during the game." For the Angels-Diamondbacks game, the replay trailer was set up in the parking lot behind centre field. Teams are allowed to have a person to watch the game on television and advise the managers via phone whether it would be worth it for the call to be challenged. The Angels communicated via walkie talkie Monday but there will be a dedicated phone line for each team in the major league parks. Under the new rules, each manager has one challenge. If the first challenge is successful, the manager gets a second. From the seventh inning on, if the manager is out of challenges, the umpire can decide to have the play reviewed. Some critics of expanded replay worried that challenges would delay the game too much. Culbreth said he didnt think that would be a problem, and pointed at the benefits. "It will work itself out. I think time really isnt going to be an issue in the end," he said. "And if it is, its about getting the play right in the end, anyhow."
