The New England Patriots picked Florida defensive back Duke Dawson in the second round of the NFL draft after a flurry of trades during the day.
Dawson is a 5 foot 10, 197 pound cornerback who tied for the team lead with four interceptions last season. He picked off six passes in his career and returned three of them for touchdowns.
The Patriots came into the day with two second round picks and a third. They traded them all, but then traded back into the second round to grab Dawson.
New England also made a trade for offensive lineman Trent Brown from San Francisco.
In the second round, the Cleveland Browns took Georgia’s Nick Chubb at pick No. 35 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took USC’s Ronald Jones at pick No. 38 before the Lions traded their second and fourth round picks to the Patriots to move up eight spots.

Really kind of a testament to just the overall depth of this class. I think he is a first round caliber player that’s going to go in the second round.”
The Lions averaged just 76.3 yards rushing per game last season, more than 9 yards fewer per game than any other team in the NFL.
The Indianapolis Colts opened the second round of the draft by selecting South Carolina State linebacker Darius Leonard and then chose Auburn guard Braden Smith with the very next pick, eager to add more protection for quarterback Andrew Luck.
Leonard, taken with the 36th overall pick, is projected to be a weak side linebacker who can play all three downs in the Colts’ new 4 3 scheme. He has the skills to not just make tackles but rush the passer and cover tight ends.
One day after second year general manager Chris Ballard chose Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson at No. 6 overall, he used the 37th pick on Smith Austin Carr Jersey, a 6 6 and 315 pound lineman named to All SEC teams in his last three years of college. The Colts have struggled for years to protect Luck, who missed all of 2017 due to shoulder surgery. Jacoby Brissett took most of the pounding in his absence as the 31st ranked Colts offense allowed a league high 56 sacks.
Smith allowed just 11 hurries in 1,103 pass blocking snaps last season, according to Pro Football Focus.
Just 4 12 last season and missing from the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, the Colts have numerous holes to address.
Leonard will be counted upon to strengthen a 29th ranked defense lacking an identity, especially after leading tackler Jon Bostic departed in free agency. The 6 2, 234 pound linebacker was the MEAC defensive player of the year with 124 total tackles, including 14.5 for loss and 3.5 sacks. He had a season high 19 tackles against Clemson and 14 tackles in the Senior Bowl.
An offseason overhaul of the coaching staff, including the hiring of coach Frank Reich, led to a switch from a 3 4 scheme and the subsequent release of nose tackle Johnathan Hankins. Leonard is known as a self motivated prospect. After high school, he turned down a Clemson preferred walk on invitation to sign with South Carolina State.
The Colts moved down three spots with their third second round selection by trading the 49th overall choice to Philadelphia in exchange for the Eagles’ 52nd overall pick and a fifth round selection https://www.patriotsnefans.com/dwayne-thomas-jersey-c-88.html, 169th overall.
Later, the New York Giants didn’t wait long to find a blocker to help No. 2 overall draft pick Saquon Barkley.
The Giants grabbed mammoth guard Will Hernandez of UTEP with the second pick of the second round, a 345 pounder who moved into the Miners’ starting lineup as a redshirt freshman and started all 49 games at left guard.
The Giants considered Hernandez a first round choice, general manager Dave Gettleman said.
“He played for an 0 13 team last year and if you look at him in Game 13, the kid has heart because he played as hard in that game as he played on Game 1,” Gettleman said. “I love the heart part. This guy has a lot of talent, very athletic for his size. He can run. He played very smart.”
Coach Pat Shurmur said that Hernandez will give the Giants strength in the middle and he is good in both the run and pass games.
“This is a guy who has a really good chance to play very early in his career,” Shurmur said, adding he will be tested at both left and right guard.
Hernandez also has a mean streak the Giants like. Gettleman described him as “cranky.”
Hernandez believes he can step in and play right away. He laughed when asked about his on field demeanor.
“On the field I am a completely different person than I am off the field,” Hernandez said. “I take football very serious. It’s more than a game to me. It’s who I am. So whenever I get on that field I take it with all seriousness.”
The Giants offensive line struggled last season with injuries and poor play. The team ranked No. 26 in the league in rushing, averaging 96.8 yards and finishing 31st in points scored.
New York lost center Weston Richburg and left guard Justin Pugh to free agency. Gettleman signed New England Patriots left tackle Nate Solder and guard Patrick Omameh as free agents and planned to move 2015 first round pick Ereck Flowers from left tackle to right tackle.
Flowers, however, is not taking part in the organized team activities and the recent minicamp, both voluntary events.
Brett Jones played well at center after Richburg was sidelined by a concussion. The guard positions are wide open with John Jerry, Jon Halapio and John Greco all returning and Hernandez and Omameh now in the mix. New York has two picks in the third round https://www.patriotsnefans.com/matt-lengel-jersey-c-90.html, the second and fifth overall. The latter came from Tampa Bay in the deal that sent Jason Pierre Paul to the Buccaneers.

Atlanta Falcons fans have been on the edge of their seats this offseason as speculation surrounding star wide receiver Julio Jones has grown.
In April, the former Alabama standout made his social media accounts private and unfollowed everyone from the Falcons’ organization.
While those close to the situation have said nothing is awry https://www.falconsatljersey.com/matt-simms-jersey-c-4.html, Jones’ latest decision could be a sign that isn’t entirely true. Here’s what NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport had to say about the situation on Friday
RELATED Julio Jones panic Former Alabama star scares Atlanta Falcons fans on social media Jones has been an outstanding player — on and off the field — for the Falcons since they moved up to No. 6 overall to take him in the 2011 NFL Draft. In seven seasons, he has 9 https://www.falconsatljersey.com/alek-torgersen-jersey-c-5.html,054 receiving yards and 43 touchdowns.
RELATED 2018 NFL Draft Atlanta Falcons select Calvin Ridley
Contributing to the speculation around Jones is the fact the Falcons selected former Alabama receiver Calvin Ridley with the No. 26 overall pick in last month’s draft.
Is the team preparing for an eventual departure by Jones? It’s highly doubtful. As Rapoport said in the segment, the Falcons organization has a ton of respect for Jones Ricardo Allen Jersey, and they want nothing more than for him to finish his career in Atlanta.
It will be fun to see the two former Crimson Tide stars giving opposing defenses trouble in 2018. Don’t be surprised to see quarterback Matt Ryan give a “Roll Tide” or two.
FRISCO, Texas Since owner Jerry Jones opened the offseason with the term “Dak friendly” to describe the Dallas Cowboys’ approach to their offense, there has been no actual definition of what it means.
At least to a small degree, the first unveiling of a Dak friendly offense will come Wednesday, when the Cowboys hold their first of three organized team activities that are open to the media.
I think maybe it’s a fun, narrative term or whatever, but I think the Dak friendly, Cooper friendly, Mike White friendly, all quarterbacks, is an offense that executes and does its job when we call upon them, offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said. We’re just focusing on some of that. We’re looking at some new things, like we do every year https://www.cowboysdaclub.com/lp-ladouceur-jersey-c-83.html, but looking at things we want to improve on that wasn’t up to snuff last year.”
Dak Prescott isn’t really sure what Dak friendly means.
“It’s a misnomer,” Prescott told reporters last week. “It’s not exactly Dak friendly. It’s Cowboys friendly.” To suggest the Cowboys will be Dak friendly in 2018 suggests they were not Dak friendly in 2016 or 2017. Of course they were. They tailored their offense to Prescott’s strengths when he was forced to take over for an injured Tony Romo in 2016, when he directed the Cowboys to a 13 3 record with one of the best seasons for a rookie quarterback in NFL history. They continued to play to Prescott’s strengths in 2017, but the passing game became stagnant in the second half of the season, which played a big part in the Cowboys’ 9 7 finish.
“You are trying to have a system that is comprehensive enough and flexible enough that you can fit players in it and play to their strengths,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “No position does that apply to more than the quarterback position. We have always felt that way, whether a quarterback is comfortable throwing certain routes or doing certain things in his drop. If he is better outside the pocket or inside the pocket, you always want to play to his strengths and in some way minimize things he doesn t do quite as well.”
Since Prescott became the starter, the Cowboys have used some run pass options but will now do more. It’s not about having Prescott run more. It’s about keeping the defense off balance with the quarterback’s ability to run.
In each of his first two seasons, Prescott ran 57 times. He picked up 282 yards as a rookie and 357 yards in 2017. In each season, he ran for six touchdowns. The Cowboys won’t want him to run as much as Cam Newton, who has had at least 90 carries in all seven of his seasons with the Carolina Panthers.
A model could be Alex Smith, who was traded to the Washington Redskins in the offseason after a successful tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs. He carried 60 times a year ago for 355 yards and a touchdown.
But as the Chiefs incorporated more run pass options, Smith’s efficiency in the passing game rose. He threw for a career high 4,042 yards with 26 touchdown passes and five interceptions in 2017.

Since Garrett came on board in 2007 as the offensive coordinator, the Cowboys have run a systematic passing game that s similar to when Michael Irvin was catching passes from Troy Aikman in the 1990s. With Prescott, the Cowboys will want to incorporate more of the spread offense he ran so well at Mississippi State.
Part of the Dak friendly movement has been to find receivers who will be in the right spots at the right times. With run pass options, receivers have to be precise with their routes and their timing. That was not a strength of Dez Bryant, who had some of his success with Romo based on reading and reacting.
As a rookie, Prescott excelled when throwing outside the pocket https://www.cowboysdaclub.com/cedric-thornton-jersey-c-84.html, but defenses were able to contain that better in 2017. The Cowboys want to do more with Prescott on the move, but they want to improve their play action and run action games to give him easier Taco Charlton Jersey, quicker throws.
“One of Dak s strongest points has been his progressions,” executive vice president Stephen Jones said. “He likes to read through a progression one, two, three https://www.cowboysdaclub.com/demarcus-lawrence-jersey-c-82.html, four. He likes to do that and get it to the right player rather than maybe have pressure to get to a player.”
Wednesday is the first look at what those changes could be, but even Prescott isn’t so sure the changes will be noticed.
“I wouldn’t say there’s a big difference,” Prescott said. “Every time you go into the offseason there’s new adds and there’s new things you’re going to do and there’s going to be changes. Basically, the scheme things we’re doing is not much different for the most part.”
